Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin and had a difficult childhood, losing his mother and sister at a young age. As president during the Civil War, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, freeing slaves in Confederate states and transforming the war into a fight to end slavery. After the Union victory, the 13th Amendment was ratified in 1865, officially abolishing slavery across the United States.
