“Honest Abe”
                               By. Hope Ackerman

Every single president did outstanding things, but I know who did the most

amazing things. Abraham Lincoln was the most excellent president. He was

astonishing. He went from growing up on a small farm in the woods of Kentucky

to being president of United States of America. This may get you thinking how can

someone so poor become so wealthy? You may also think it’s impossible for that

to happen, but for Abe it was not. He tried so hard to accomplish his goals.

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. His farm life

as a child wasn’t simple. His mom died from drinking bad milk when Abe was 8

years old. This was a hard time for him because he and his mom were very close,

and he was always honest with her. So that’s how he got his nickname, “Honest

Abe”. Also when Abe was a child, he never went to school so he taught himself.

He also loved to read, especially the bible. When Abraham was 20 or 21 he went

to college for a year. He also married Mary Todd Lincoln at age 42 and had 4 kids.

After his many jobs, finally on November 6, 1860, he was elected president of the

United States.
Lincoln was the 16th president. Lincoln was in office from 1861 to 1865.

During his time in office, states were leaving the union so Lincoln wanted war to

keep the country together. During the war slaves were freed. Abraham also wrote

the Emancipation Proclamation saying all blacks are free.

After the Civil War ended, Lincoln reunited the country. Also, when the war

ended Abe began his 2nd term in office. On April 15, 1865 Abe was attending a

play at Ford’s Theater with his wife Mary. While he was watching the play, he was

shot by John Wilkes Booth and died nine hours later. His last words were said to

be, “She won’t think anything about it”. ~ Abraham Lincoln.

“Four score and seven years ago, our father brought forth on this continent

a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men

are created equal”. ~ Abraham Lincoln said these important words in the Getty’s

Burg Address. Until Abraham became president, African Americans weren’t

getting fair treatment. If it weren’t for him, our country would have never

changed, but I’m glad it did.
