There are two types of iron in the diet: heme iron found naturally in meat which is efficiently absorbed by the body, and non-heme iron found in plants which must be broken down before absorption and often causes gastrointestinal side effects. Heme iron supplements containing bovine hemoglobin provide a natural form of iron that is easily absorbed without side effects, unlike synthetic non-heme iron supplements which are poorly absorbed and commonly cause issues.
