Abortion in Colombia was legalized in 2006 for three specific cases: when the fetus has malformations, when the pregnancy is the result of rape, or when the mother's life is in danger. Some fetal malformations that allow for legal abortion include macrocephaly or microcephaly, which are disorders of abnormal cranial bone or brain growth, Down syndrome, which results from extra genetic material, and heart disease. Rape is also grounds for legal abortion. If the mother's life is endangered by the pregnancy, abortion is permitted.
