1) The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck documents the Great Depression and the plight of farmers who lost their lands in the Dust Bowl and migrated to California in search of work.
2) The novel follows the Joad family as they are forced to leave their farm in Oklahoma and travel to California in their truck, facing many hardships along the way.
3) Through vivid descriptions and complex characters representing different human qualities, Steinbeck brings to life the difficulties faced by ordinary families during this era of economic crisis and environmental disaster.
Joe Christmas’s Identity Dilemma in William Faulkner's Light in August
Hussein Nasir Shwein Al-Khazali,
Department of English Language, College of Arts, University of Al-Qadisiyah, Iraq
The war had a critical impact throughout the history of the USA on the conquered South, which was undergoing "collective decline" leading to a "collective cultural trauma". The concept of trauma is inseparably associated with the South's ideologies, specifically the ideology of white superiority in the South. The present study investigates the role of traumatic life events on identity in Light in August. Joe Christmas, the protagonist in William Faulkner's novel, is portrayed as a trauma survivor on a never-ending quest for identification. Also, this study is an attempt to examine how the identity of Joe Christmas is formed by the collective identity of his community. Joe Christmas who is always in search of identity wishes to be a tragic character. He combats all the threats to physical, intellectual and emotional safety through violent reactions that generally occur in explosions against women because he intimately threatens his understanding of his sexuality. Joe Christmas, associating himself with the black race at many points within the novel, suffers from the mockery that entails only because he knows a bit about his personal story and enables his racial confusion to influence his sexual identity in his teenage years and adulthood. This study analyses how Christmas challenges, heightens and exacerbates Jefferson’s racial and sex-based stringent classifications. In this paper, Faulkner is undoubtedly disengaged from portraying the terrible representation of the injury by which his mulatto character experiences "Trauma Process ". In this respect, it is revealed that collective injuries are related to the collective character of America. It successively reflects the entire destructive vision of the South that is represented in Faulkner's novel.

Abstract: This study is an attempt to determine the supernatural beliefs which prevails or dominates in African diaspora in the light of materialistic world. This novel is imbued with supernatural incidents and occurrences. This novel is fraught with tragedy and pain. Every character of this novel has his/her own painful story. Each and every character is contributing his/ their best to change his/their condition and plight. At some part of this novel, the tragedy is not an individual experience, but is rather like a collective consciouseness. In the parameters of materialistic worlds, these incidents would not look like a real incidents. The mind of anybody would raise so many questions. Which might be reasonable and logic based. How can a person control the power of nature? How can a person talk with dead people? Such type of things prevails in every society. What are the reasons and causes of dominating such type of superstitious things in these societies. In this study we would try to analyse and measure such type of things in the parameters of materialistic world.

"A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor PresentationBri Dold
AP English Literature and Composition is one of those classes where there is no right or wrong; there are no formulas or set values to which even the most unenthused mathematician can simply “plug and chug.” Literature is the exponent of collaboration, creativity, and communication, values instilled by Academy at the Lakes.
As a first semester project for AP English Literature and Composition, students in groups of four analyzed a short story and shared their analysis as a keynote-style presentation. Instances where the roles are reversed – students teaching other students and even teachers – is a great way to foster growth in public speaking among other soft skills all the while engaging seniors who seem to be halfway out Academy’s front door.
Our group focused on Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” An example of Southern gothic literature, O’Connor explores the sentiments of the pre-civil rights era in rural Georgia. To preface our presentation, we posed two essential questions to our audience: (1) Does being a good person entail decency, nobility, wealth, social position, or piousness? (2) Are sinners those who are simply lost or looking for salvation?
Leading up to our group presentation, we collectively analyzed this short story, examining the work with a fine-tooth comb to exhaust every literary element and rhetorical device. This is the beauty of collaboration: we each were able to share our own, unique perspectives and interpretations about O’Connor’s words. Collaborative efforts go hand-in-hand with a balanced, liberal arts education, for the skills nursed in this environment empower the leaders of tomorrow.

BLAME THE TLAXCALTECS
Time convergence-the article is extraordinary because it speaks of two different worlds. Laura and her cousin husband come from different time in history. In their world, there is war. Citizens especially woman and children are subjected to a lot of suffering. Her fear makes her flee to Nachita’s world where everything is in order and safe. Therefore, she and her lover cousin term this as betrayal because in the other world she is married to Pablo.
Variation in understanding-The characters do not understand Laura’s situation except for the cook-Nachitta. From the beginning she understands the fact that her boss Pablo and the mistress Laura do not belong together. She also understands and believes Laura’s story which appears unbelievable and impossible. Everything that makes sense to her doesn’t make sense to anyone else including Laura; Laura’s husband, mother in-law and the housemaids term Laura as mad.
Cultural diversity- Laura is an Indian married to a Mexican. The two cultures vary in all dimensions especially marriage. According to Indian culture, individuals are allowed to marry their closest relatives such as immediate cousins. Laura terms the Indian man as her cousin-husband. During her questioning by her in-laws concerning the man’s position in her life she does not say anything because she understands how absurd it will sound in the Mexican culture.
Personality-Laura explains that she fell in love with Pablo because he resembled someone she knew. However, everything was a total deception when she realized Pablo and her cousin were two different people. For example, Pablo gets very angry and locks her in the house unlike his cousin-husband. Time difference-Laura cannot keep an appropriate track of time. According to her she is just goes for hours but on her return she is a missing person for days or weeks.

NOVEL OPINION
The city of Mexico had revolved from a small town to a complex town, and the Spanish Empire maintained the city and kept it homogenous. The ruling parties later adopted the capitalistic ideas that transformed the city from its poverty levels to prosperity. The upper class and the elegant people of the city later left the city to the middle class who lead a different form of life and eventually lead to the degradation of the European life introduced by first class people. The morality of the society decayed as a result of the homosexual life, and the majority of the people started living on the streets. Along with these changes, the literature of Mexico City changed, and they adopted a new form of a language such as Gustavo, the writer has been described as the master of the landscape and the hero of the land. He turned poverty, desperate sexuality and hunger into the magical transformation of positive and opportunistic life. He also viewed anyone who is unhappy to be their causative agents of their sadness.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Grapes of Wrath
By: John Steinbeck
All through history, a number of great events have taken place that captured
onlooker’s attention, both onlookers of that period as well as the onlookers who are not
yet born. Textbooks captured these events. The hearts of the people also played a part in
preserving them. Writing experts played key roles in ensuring that the events are
preserved in order for the future generations to remember and to be informed about the
occurrences. The Grapes of Wrath is a book like such. In it, a significant historical event
having enormous impact on a number of individuals was documented as well as
preserved to be seen by the future generation. In the book, John Steinbeck talks of the
unending tirade that hovered over the unending unemployment cycle, as well as the
desire for happiness, stability, and independence.
This novel starts with the scene that shows the consequences of a normal dust storm.
The dust storm is not unique or rare at all, however, it takes place normally. Sand has
calmed down, village men are assessing the damages that have been caused as children
and women sit patiently waiting for them. This episode is passive, and talks of nobody in
particular. It also talks to nobody in particular; rather, it talks generally to people as a
whole. In the chapter that follows, the book starts Tom Joad’s narrative. He is a former
2. Surname 2
convict who is looking for his former family members after being sentenced four years in
jail. The narrative also occurs in Oklahoma.
This changing pattern that takes place between the historical chapters which does not
entail any direct action, and the ones of historical-fiction episodes, continues to change
all though this book. It is noted that the length of historical chapters extend up to three
chapters from a single chapter at ago. However, fictional chapters extend not more than a
single chapter at ago.
The author of the book showed the character’s feelings, the major theme, as well as
timeframe in a manner that the ultimate effect is the one of an entire circle. Despite the
fact that the story does not seem to end, its sense of accomplishment is ever present in a
way that cannot be explainable.
This novel entails an account of movements done by Joad’s family, Tom Senior, Tom
Junior, Connie, Ruthie, Rosasharn, Winfield, Granpa, Granma, Ma, Uncle John, and also
their best friend Casy, who is an ex-reverend. A number of crops grown in Texas as well
as Oklahoma had been purchased by the bank. The bank applied an enhanced technology
in order to farm, and reap. They also used technology for the preparation of crops with
minimal efforts. Through the use of technology, commercial firms were rapidly created
by the banks. The banks also made very huge profits. They did not think of the living
creatures. They therefore ruined the lives of Oklahoma residents. The citizens were now
not capable of meeting their customers’ demands. They were hence obliged to have their
farms sold, and also to get other ways of living.
The novel’s mood can be noted immediately it begins; the esteem of the major
characters does not exist. Their reluctance, stubbornness, as well as their incapability
3. Surname 3
motivates them to start a new life California from Oklahoma. They do not have even a
rough idea of where they are heading to. They only have it in mind that they have to
leave. Along the path of Joad family’s dreams, a number of obstacles are put.
Another significant factor that can be noted in this novel is the combination of
characters presenting themselves in unambiguous ways; all of them have unmovable as
well as precise roles to play in the story. Every character also stands for a given
significant human nature aspect. For instance, Tom Jr. is a symbolism of rebellious spirits
which are found in beings that are oppressed, Granpa on the other hand symbolizes a
man’s or a woman’s reluctance to be taken away from legal property. Other members of
the family symbolize important aspects like youth, hope, innocence, sacrifice, leadership,
persistence, as well as admiration. The single most significant of all these aspects is
sacrifice and it is illustrated through Casy.
Tom Joad Jr. is significant in that he makes the family to be together. He also stops
them from moving away. At first, he was imprisoned for four years after murdering
someone in self-defense. He had a good behavior while in prison and therefore, he was
released by the prison officials three years after being imprisoned. However, he was told
not to move out of Oklahoma until a year elapses.
Since the family of Joad was forcefully moved westward, Tom disclosed to the
parents the parole’s conditions; however, the situation left no option. Therefore, the
family of Joad continued to move towards the westward side. At this time, they were
hopeless and what they were doing was contrary to the law. This later played a major role
in the book, because as they traveled, their sadness’ accrue, and result into a big trouble
that the entire family has to join in order for them move with it together.
4. Surname 4
Nevertheless, since all individuals are required to do following the carriage of the
world’s weight on the shoulders, Ruthie whose age is 12 dropped the load she was
carrying, and carried an even larger weight when she unintentionally said the crimes her
brother had done. The family of Joad had suffered, and having a specific thought that
they could not avoid, they moved on.
A number of the students from the high school or teenagers, usually, does not know a
number of books that are got from “Literary Canon”,; however, The Grapes of Wrath is
not presented like this. It has an intricate system of writing which appeals to young
people through the fact that it is very simple. The book also appeals to adults by its
interwoven, unequivocally and intricate realistic plot. The book illustrates the problems
that are experienced by average families coming from middle class. It now appears that
this occurrence has ceased in America after the elapse of seventy-five years.
Presently, official jobs that are occupied by a number of the citizens who are in the
middle class are comparable to the menial jobs. When the jobs that are being held by
Chief Executive Officers of our century are taken into consideration, an analogy relating
it to 1930’s can be created. Nevertheless, the situation can be said to have improved
because the living standards have greatly improved. The luxury that was held by people
in upper class of the 1930’s today is held by people from the middle-class. However, the
upper class of today lives in an unprecedented luxury that was not existent during the last
era.
The family of the Joads did not have individual enemies or opponents. Again, they
would not have had enemies. However, people hated them because they were among the
people who moved towards western coast from Oklahoma. All those who moved were
5. Surname 5
hated. It is very clear that if Joad’s family moved at another time that is different from the
other people; they could not have had a very hard experience. They could also have got
jobs and besides, they could have lived a very stable lifestyle. They could have also
accomplished the dreams that they had.
The Grapes of Wrath is indeed a comprehensive book. It is filled with numerous fun
fiction as well as historical facts. It applies a combination of the fun and historical facts to
create a very sensible story, a story that is indisputably very accurate as far as history is
concerned. It is therefore a very good novel. It provides the readers with experiences
