Toni Morrison was born in 1931 and worked as an editor specializing in black fiction at Random House before becoming a professor at Princeton University. Her novel Beloved is a historical fiction and ghost story set after the American Civil War that follows the character of Sethe who is haunted by her daughter Beloved's spirit after killing her to protect her from slavery.
