(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
• There is a relationship between music and visuals
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
• The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups
of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their
work (a visual style).

telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
• There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music

set; including controlled use of the
camera, attention to framing, variety of
shot sizes and close attention to mise en
scene.
4. 1st Textual Analysis – to be completed
by _________
Complete a textual analysis of an iconic music video from before you
were born (the next couple of lessons will be useful for this)
Analyse it using Goodwin’s conventions. Remember to comment on:
- Camera shots, angles and movements
- How the sound works with the images
- Mise en scene
- Editing
Can you find evidence of these? Is there anything that goes against
these conventions?
Complete as a blog post with screen grabs from your chosen music
video to illustrate your points
5. What happens…the traditional route!
• Record company / artist approach a video production
company.
• The director listens to the music and comes up with an
idea – ‘a treatment’. S/he pitches it to the company /
artist.
• If they like it, they buy in. If not, they go elsewhere.
• Some directors specialise, but will take on a variety of
genres.
• Many directors go onto work in feature films (David
Fincher, Spike Jonze) David Fincher
Made music videos for
-Madonna
- Nine inch Nails
-Aerosmith
-Michael Jackson
AND directed ‘The Social
Network’, ‘The Curious
Case of Benjamin Button’
‘The Girl with the Dragon
Tattoo’
6. The impact of new media on music
videos
How do you think digital technology is changing
music videos?
The Good:
YouTube, Vimeo, cheaper and better quality technology means more
people can make good quality music videos: good for up and coming
directors and independent bands
Fan vids or unofficial music videos can sometimes become more popular
than the original one.
The Bad:
A lot of working for free before you get any paid work!
7. Media 2.0: David Gauntlett looked at the way Web 2.0 is
changing media production and consumption
8. You are the director. Ideas…

9. Clue: it’s a cheesy 80s ballad…
I'd say love was a magical thing
I'd say love would keep us from pain
Had I been there, had I been there
10. "A Different Corner"
I'd say love was a magical thing
I'd say love would keep us from pain
Had I been there, had I been there
I would promise you all of my life
But to lose you would cut like a knife
So I don't dare, no I don't dare
'Cause I've never come close in all of these years
You are the only one to stop my tears
And I'm so scared, I'm so scared
Take me back in time maybe I can forget
Turn a different corner and we never would have met
Would you care
I don't understand it, for you it's a breeze
Little by little you've brought me to my knees
Don't you care
No I've never come close in all of these years
You are the only one to stop my tears
I'm so scared of this love
And if all that there is is this fear of being used
I should go back to being lonely and confused
If I could, I would, I swear

12. TASK:
• You are going to get a storyboard for an iconic video for
Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Californication.
One feature of music video editing is cutting to the beat or
bar.
The bars are planned out for you. Your task is to storyboard
what will go into each frame and cut to the bar.
We will watch it 3 times and you need to finish it off at
home.
