In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
MEDIA CONVENTIONS
COMBINATION OF THE MAIN
AND ANCILLARY TEXTS

How effective is the combination of your main product
and ancillary texts?
HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN
PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?

For my A2 Media Studies coursework was to create a film
trailer and a promotional package. I chose to make a film
trailer, film poster and magazine front cover for the film.
The genre of the film I have chosen is Crime Fiction and
throughout my posts on my Word Press account I
explored the codes and conventions of media texts
within this genre. I used the research stage to establish
ground which would strongly link all my tasks to the
genre chosen. This I found have increased the
effectiveness of my film promotional package and kept
my target audience enjoy my work more.
After researching and looking into similar film posters the purpose of the poster was clearer and it is to advertise the film through
gripping and dramatic images with the actor’s names. I think this is a good technique as the images are the main things that
usually grab people’s attention and if you have a good dominant image then their interest will lead them to look at the text. The
design and colours also were a vital element in the poster and it had a clear theme in the poster with a colour scheme. I also think
that the tag lines used in the poster helped to capture people and so I have decided to create a tagline and typography for the title
which I have used in every media text I have created.
I have kept my film poster quite simple as I feel as posters in my chosen genre are usually simpler and they let the images capture
the attention of their audience. Just like the Gatsby poster I have also produced 4 more posters which are of the characters alone
in their own poster. I think the use of different character images is a lot more interesting as there isn’t a dominant image there
are multiple ones which interests people more. Also I have chosen a landscape orientation rather than a simple portrait as this
subverts most of the posters that I looked into apart from one or two. The image of myself creates a synergy between the
magazine cover as I am in the same costume and the film trailer as again I am wearing the same dress. This lets the audience
create the links and realise it through either one of the poster, magazine or trailer.
Once I finished research into
my poster thoughts and ideas
I moved onto looking into
magazine covers. This was an
easy area for me as in many
previous tasks throughout
my Media work I have made
many magazine covers for all
different aspects of the
Media including a music
magazine cover and a
student magazine cover. The
only thing I really looked
into was what dominant
image I should use. I knew
the sell lines and style of
magazine I was going for
(Empire magazine) however
I was unsure on the main
focus of my dominant
image. Once coming up with
the idea of what the article
would be about (behind the
scenes) I did a small photo
shoot of me with the camera
and tripod. However, when
looking into the photos more
and even asking my audience
the photos were not as
popular as the photos I had
taken previously for my
poster.

So I tried to create an image
from that photo shoot and the
photo I created actually worked
better than the previous drafts I
created and handed in. I think
the fact that I used the same
image from the same photo
shoot creates a clear link and the
images are very striking as the
yellow dress stands out as does
the makeup. However the nature
of the photo is very different as
I have used one with me smiling.
I think this is like many other
magazines as it is a behind the
scenes article and through my
focus group I learned that my
target audience would like to
know about the funny things
that happen behind the scenes
and they would rather read
something informal than a
serious interview.

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Although I have completed a screening of my trailer I have also used social networking
sites to get more people involved in giving me feedback and to help me gather a clear
idea of their thoughts on my work. I used three different social networking sites:
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I have also uploaded my trailer to YouTube which
enables anyone to leave comments and feedback. I think that not only does this help my
coursework but it also reflects how a real Media text would get the word out about a new
and upcoming movie which has given me a larger perspective on how important social
networking is for all types of Media.

MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES

How have you used Media technologies in your Media
project?
PRACTICAL TECHNOLOGIES

Throughout I have used many different pieces of technological equipment
whilst studying Media and I have found two very good cameras.
My video camera is a Panasonic HC-V110. I have
found this camera to be very useful and fully capable
to film a good shot. The zoom was very useful when
it came to scenes such as the burning of the
documents. As this is my own camera I have been
able to become familiar with it in my own time and
use it for different events which made filming my
work very easy and enjoyable.

My camera is a Nikon Coolpix p100I have used this
camera for many years and throughout many Media
projects in the past I have used it. The image quality is
very high which was useful when using Photoshop and
InDesign.

WORDPRESS
(THE HOME BUTTON TAKES YOU TO THE LOGO PAGE)

WordPress has been the one site in which I have constantly posted updates on my
work and what I am doing. Throughout my blog you can see the stages of which my
trailer, magazine and poster have been through. By using this site I have gained a
greater knowledge on how posting about your work and what you are doing gets it
noticed more and how the Media world does rely on social networking.
TWITTER
(THE HOME BUTTON TAKES YOU TO THE LOGO PAGE)

My Twitter account did not play as big a role as my WordPress account did.
However I did post my magazine and poster on there and received a little bit of
feedback, again proving that social networking is crucial to the media industry.
FACEBOOK
(THE HOME BUTTON TAKES YOU TO THE LOGO PAGE)

My Facebook account was the most useful account I used to get
feedback from my audience. It gave me a wider audience to receive
feedback and advice from. Most of my feedback was from my friends on
Facebook. This media technology is one of the best ways for people in
the media industry to get word out about movies and promotional
packages. Through this project I have seen how all movies have a
Facebook fan page which broadens their fan base and demographic
making their media texts more successful.
PHOTOSHOP
(THE HOME BUTTON TAKES YOU TO THE LOGO PAGE)

For all my images used on my magazine and my poster I used Photoshop. I
have used Photoshop for years and have built up a good skill base and can
very quickly manipulate an image to how I wish it to look. Throughout the
stages of making and coming up with ideas for both my magazine and poster
I manipulated many images to help me decide which one I preferred. It also
helped me to demonstrate a certain feel/look to the image for example the
image on the magazine demonstrates glamorous whereas the poster
demonstrates sadness and fear,

IMOVIE
(THE HOME BUTTON TAKES YOU TO THE LOGO PAGE)

For my whole trailer I used iMovie to edit and put together all the shots.
This editing software is very basic yet very useful however I would of
liked to of used Final Cut Pro however I found I did not have the time to
get to grips with the controls. Although iMovie is easy to operate and
makes the scenes very slick and everything look good I did find it had a
few minor problems. For instance if you were to slow a scene down not
by the given marker you will receive a ghost sound on your published
movie. However, I did find iMovie was the best choice for me to edit my
project on as it is a very fast pace editing software and allowed me to pick
it up quickly and keep it safe.
INDESIGN
(THE HOME BUTTON TAKES YOU TO THE LOGO PAGE)

I used InDesign to create both my poster and my magazine. For over 5
different Media projects I have used InDesign to create both posters and
magazines. This meant when it came to my magazine and poster I was very
confident with the software and my skills. I made my poster very quickly and
kept adding and changing bits to it as I felt throughout the creation process.
This software made it very easy for me to keep up to date with my work and if
I needed to change it I could do very quickly.
CONCLUSION

Throughout this project I have enjoyed making all different bits of Media
texts and throughout I have also found how crucial social networking is to the
media world it is today. Throughout the research stages right through to the
evaluation I have been able to keep a clear mind set on what I wanted to do
and how I wanted to do it. I am very proud of what I have created in my final
year of Media Studies. My audience research stage was the most important
stage as it gave me more ideas to put into my work and I kept referring back
to it throughout the creation stages of my work. Throughout production I
found that I can film very quickly once I had again become familiar with the
shot types and angles and keeping my storyboard close at hand. This project
has been hands on all the way through and has been very enjoyable and fun to
do.
