Interaction and Language Learning in 3D Virtual WorldsCristina Palomeque
The document analyzes language learning interactions in virtual worlds. It describes 3 learning situations observed: 1) teacher-student interaction where the teacher models and drills with students; 2) student-student collaboration on a dialogue writing task; and 3) students interacting with an virtual actor to solve a crime. The research aims to understand types of interaction and uses transcription to analyze multimodal interactions. It finds benefits like immersive learning but also challenges around technical skills and balancing language with virtual world learning curves.
Developing a Multimodal Transcription to account for Interaction in 3D Virtua...Cristina Palomeque
The document proposes a 3M method for developing multimodal transcriptions to account for interaction in 3D virtual worlds. The 3M method involves transcribing communication at three levels - macro, micro, and tagging system. It aims to address the difficulties in representing simultaneous multimodal phenomena and adding a spatial dimension when transcribing complex interactions that can occur across multiple channels in 3D virtual environments.
Communication Strategies in synchronous CMC and face-to-face interactionsCristina Palomeque
This document summarizes a study that compared communication strategies used in synchronous online chat and face-to-face discussions. The study found that students used many paralinguistic strategies like emoticons and punctuation in chat. They also used fillers and self-correction. In face-to-face discussions, students relied more on paralinguistic cues like mime and emphasis, as well as fillers and self-correction. While chat helped organize ideas, students felt face-to-face was more immediate. The document proposes future research on communication strategies in virtual worlds which could provide immersive learning environments.
A Portfolio.hu, a Privatbankar.hu, a HWSW mobile! és az IIR Fraud 2015 konferencián bemutatott prezentációink összefoglaló megállapításait foglaltuk most össze számotokra.
From simulations to (3D) virtuality: Mirorring tasks from language learningCristina Palomeque
The document discusses the use of multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) for language learning and identifies three types of tasks used: 1) direct-transfer activities that replicate offline tasks without adapting for the virtual environment, 2) activities designed specifically for the MUVE that engage students, and 3) integrated MUVE tasks involving collaboration, problem-solving and meaningful interaction within the virtual world. It concludes that effective MUVE tasks should make use of the unique features of the virtual environment and be communicative to maximize student language learning.
Achieveing the Ying-Yang in language teaching and learning in virtual worldsCristina Palomeque
This document discusses achieving a balance between traditional and innovative approaches to language teaching and learning in virtual worlds. It notes that both students and teachers bring established beliefs from traditional settings that can hinder taking full advantage of new technologies if not addressed. To achieve balance, the document recommends making language learning objectives explicit, training both students and teachers for the new environment, considering students' beliefs, revisiting teachers' own beliefs, fully utilizing the features of virtual worlds, engaging students actively, and providing informative feedback including exploiting the gaming aspects of such platforms.

The document presents a Gedankenexperiment to evaluate machine translation without psychological or epistemological biases. It proposes two scenarios: the default scenario where a reviewer evaluates a source text in one language and its machine translation in another language, and the neutral scenario where the source text and machine translation are both in controlled quasi-natural languages to avoid biases. It then addresses 5 counterobjections to the neutral scenario approach from perspectives of cognition, practicality, artificial languages, typology, and human interfaces.
Measuring Computational Complexity the qualitative and quantitative intertwin...Federico Gobbo
This document discusses measuring computational complexity by comparing the time complexity of algorithms. It proposes classifying algorithms based on their time complexity functions into complexity classes like polynomials and exponentials. This allows algorithms and problems to be qualitatively classified rather than compared based on precise time complexities. The most important open problem is whether problems solvable in polynomial time (class P) are different from those solvable in non-deterministic polynomial time (class NP).
What can we know of computational inforgs?Federico Gobbo
The document discusses computational inforgs, which are defined as informational entities that involve computational information as part of a modern Von Neumann machine. It outlines that computational inforgs can be either open, where the source code is accessible, or closed, where it is not. The document proposes applying a framework called the SLMS scheme within levels of abstraction analysis to compare quantitative and qualitative properties between open and closed computational inforgs. It provides some examples and outlines future directions, such as analyzing different levels of access to a social media account on different devices.
This document discusses relations and cartesian products of sets. It defines a relation as a subset of the cartesian product of two sets that links elements between the sets. It provides examples of forming cartesian products of different sets to generate ordered pairs, and defines relations between the elements of those pairs based on given conditions. The key concepts covered are cartesian products, ordered pairs, domains and ranges of relations, and representing relations using arrow diagrams or set-builder and roster forms.
Translating into and out of a planned language: what does it mean?Federico Gobbo
Esperanto was established as a translation language through Zamenhof's translations of works from his native languages into Esperanto. Over time, as the Esperanto community grew, translations from many other languages helped develop the Esperanto language and literature. Early Esperantists relied heavily on source languages for translations, but the language gradually developed set expressions and idioms of its own. While new terms are still sometimes debated, translations played a key role in establishing Esperanto as a living language with its own standard register and literature.
An alternative globalisation: Why learn Esperanto today?Federico Gobbo
Federico Gobbo presents an overview of Esperanto and why it is still relevant today. Esperanto was created in the late 19th century during a period of optimism about international cooperation and the potential for a universal language to unite Europe. While Esperanto's popularity declined after World War I, the language continues to have communities of speakers who use it both socially and to produce original cultural works. Gobbo argues that Esperanto remains valuable for its role in fostering multilingualism, as a platform for international cultural exchange, and as a symbol of an alternative form of globalization that respects diversity and human rights.

The use of ICT tools to involve students in their learning/assessment processCristina Palomeque
This document discusses a study that used blogs to involve students in self and peer assessment of oral presentations. The study aimed to develop students' autonomy, communication skills, and key competences. Students gave feedback on presentations through a class blog. The feedback was analyzed to see if it reflected the assessment criteria and how politeness strategies were used. Most positive feedback addressed presentation structure and materials, while negative feedback focused more on external factors. Students generally used positive politeness strategies when providing feedback, though some used direct negative comments. The experience helped meet learning objectives but had some technical and timing issues. Blogs show potential for developing students' skills if integrated throughout a course.
Informal Certification based on Authentic TrustFederico Gobbo
The document discusses social networks and informal certification. It describes how knowledge and participation have changed with new technologies, with knowledge moving faster and participation seen as a mark of prestige. However, this has created a paradox where both domain experts and widespread participation are valued. The document then discusses how social networking is an old idea, with people sharing interpretations and beliefs. It explores how technological frames from different time periods, including social media today, shape how technologies are interpreted and used in practice.

The document discusses the concept of natural language from multiple perspectives. It examines whether the languages of cows, programming languages, regional dialects, sign languages, constructed languages like Esperanto and Dothraki, and children's made-up languages can be considered natural or not. The document also explores some linguistic universals that are shared by all human languages, such as the ability to be ambiguous, indicate references beyond the present, engage in dialogue, make arguments, and exhibit grammar, predication, stativity, and recursion.
Reflecting upon the European Day of LanguagesFederico Gobbo
The document summarizes Federico Gobbo's reflections on the European Day of Languages and language regimes in the EU. It provides information on the official and minority languages recognized in Europe and the EU. It discusses how the EU language regime has developed over time through key treaties and policies. It also briefly touches on proposed alternatives like Esperanto and how language regimes can impact political regimes and national identity.
Adpositional Argumentation: How Logic Originates In Natural Argumentative Dis...Federico Gobbo
Adpositional Argumentation is a new formal method that combines the Periodic Table of Arguments and Constructive Adpositional Grammars to represent linguistic and pragmatic information in argumentative discourse. It bridges computational argumentation with traditional argumentation theory and rhetoric. The method annotates natural language texts using adpositional trees that explicate the logic stemming from the discourse at different levels of abstraction without losing information. Summarizing an example text on Copernicus and Aristarchos, the method reveals the argumentation structures and patterns in the text and shows where the underlying logic originates.

Assessing linguistic unease to understand (socio)linguistic justiceFederico Gobbo
The document discusses assessing linguistic unease to understand sociolinguistic justice. It first defines sociolinguistic justice from a political philosophy perspective, focusing on issues of representation and inclusion of linguistic minorities. It then proposes measuring linguistic unease to evaluate sociolinguistic justice, by assessing an individual's comfort with various languages. Finally, it raises questions about how this individual-level analysis could scale to a community level and how knowledge about linguistic unease could inform policymakers.

Hollywood Languages: The Challenge of Interlinguistics in the New MillenniumFederico Gobbo
This document discusses the discipline of Interlinguistics and attempts to define it. It explores several potential definitions: as an autonomous branch of linguistics, as a branch of language planning, as similar to creolistics or the study of interlanguages. The document also discusses definitions that view Interlinguistics as the study of conscious human intervention in languages or as contrastive linguistics. It provides context on the history and development of Interlinguistics and examples of planned or constructed languages.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
