A Study On Sex Education
According to the University of Kansas, historian Jeffrey P. Morgan in his book Teaching, Sex, sex
education first appeared in 1913 when Chicago public schools instituted a lecture series for girls
and, separately boys, on "physiology, moral hygiene, and venereal disease". Americans have viewed
adolescent sexuality as an impulse to be controlled, or better, repressed. Sex education has mainly
aimed at saving teenage girls from having early sex, and the prevention of sexually transmitted
diseases. Alfred Kinsey discovered that girls and boys started having sex at younger ages than usual;
this made the change in the curriculum for sex classes critical. Comprehensive sex education classes
are key to our youth to ensure a healthy lifestyle, to obtain a proper education, and to achieve
economic progression. Thus making comprehensive sex education classes more effective than
abstinence–only classes.
Abstinence–only classes became funded federally in 1996 when Congress passed the landmark
Welfare Reform law. Before then, classes such as Family Life Education, and sexual history were
taught. The Department of Health Science did a study and discovered that the abstinence–only
classes were not bringing down the numbers enough to be effective. Now the classes are all evolving
into sex education classes, which teach teenagers safe ways to have sex. The Federal Government
has now stopped all funds of abstinence–only classes and started funding sex education classes. The
government is

The Importance Of Sex Education
Furthermore, school officials should also introduce sex education to students at an early age in order
to inform students about the risks of undesired pregnancies and severe transmitted diseases. At a
young age, students do not tend to think about the real consequences of being sexually active and
the risks they are being imposed to. The US Department of human and health services stated that, "
About 77 percent of teen pregnancies are unplanned. In other words, they are unwanted or occurred
"too soon," according to a national survey of adolescents" (Office of Adolescents). Due to the high
percent of teen unexpected pregnancies, school officials have to impose the topic of sex education to
students in order to think before comming actions they cannot change. Although at this age, the
students that experience unexpected pregnancies do not want to keep the child, due to the fact that
they are learn that it is a huge responsibility after getting pregnant. Teenagers that do not want to
keep and take care of the child will search for way to get rid of it, which ends in miscarriages or
abortion. Once again, The US Department of Human and Health Services stated, "In 2010, the
majority of pregnancies to adolescent females ages 15–19 in the United States–an estimated 60
percent–ended in a live birth; 15 percent ended in a miscarriage; and 30 percent ended in an
abortion" (Office of Adolescents). Students who decide to stay with the child tend to experience a
difficult life, due to the

Around the country views on sex education differ strongly, typically more religiously affiliated
states promote abstinence while liberal states are in favor of comprehensive sex education.
While both abstinence only sex education and comprehensive sex education aim to shield teens
from the possible dangers of sex, they strongly disagree on what information should be taught
and the outcome said information will have on teens.
Many parents have a strong opinion on how much information their children should be taught,
ranging from nothing at all to everything from human anatomy, STD's, gender studies, and sex
education for queer teens. According to an article titled "Comprehensive Sex Education is
Inappropriate and Harmful" some parents believe that their authority is being undermined by
comprehensive programs. Comprehensive programs to encourage the use of contraceptives,
even acknowledging the fact that they can be accessed without parental consent. This has been
heavily debated, some parents believe it is encouraging promiscuity and deceitful behavior
while others believe it is promoting their kids to make safe choices if they are too embarrassed
to ask for their parents permission to get contraceptives. According to an article titled
"Abstinence–Only Education is Effective" published by the American College of Pediatricians,

How can sexual education programs be improved to further improve the health of a country?
INTRODUCTION
Sex education has become increasingly normalised in the twenty–first century. Attitudes to sex have
evolved as society becomes more open to discussions about relationships and sexual health.
Simultaneously, the rate of teen pregnancy has dropped since the previous generation, suggesting
that either teenagers are having sex later, or using contraception more effectively. As sex education
is prevalent, however not compulsory in many of today's high schools, the country must question the
value of this program – and the impacts on the students who undertake it. The sexual health of an
individual is intrinsically connected to the overall physical and mental health of the country. The
health of individuals makes up the health of a population – it seems quite clear that, in a perfect
world, sexual education would improve national health. Countries around the world have different
attitudes towards sex education, and opinions on the most effective way to teach it – and the overall
health of these populations is equally as diverse. Australia as a nation must investigate the effects of
sexual education, to ensure its program is the most effective.

Sex Education and the Classroom
In today's society there is an on going debate over sex education and its influence on our children.
"The question is no longer should sex education be taught, but rather how it should be taught"
(DeCarlo). With teenage pregnancy rates higher than ever and the imminent threat of the contraction
of STD's, such as HIV, the role of sex education in the school is of greater importance now then ever
before. By denying children sex education you are in a sense sheltering them from the harsh realities
they are bound to encounter. Sex education has become an essential part of the curriculum and by
removing the information provided by this class we'll be voluntarily putting our children in danger.

Since family structure has changed, so have the way children are being raised. Society cannot count
on all parents to instill morals into their children and teach them the facts of life or even the
difference between right and wrong these days. Parents just don't have the time for it. Recently the
Vatican released a document stating that " parents alone cannot give children the positive sex
education they need to develop healthy attitudes towards sex" (Euchner). Another view on the
subject taken by the Nebraska Public School system is that sex education in today's society is to
complicated to be left to "the varying influences of parental attitudes and haphazard environmental
exposure" (Chaumont et al.). Besides, even if the parent were around more often then not, the
chances of a child approaching their parent about the "bird and the bees" is very unlikely. These
children need to have a place were the information on this touchy subject is provided to them
without them needing to ask. "Kids don't go asking their parents, this is the only way for them to
find out answers because they are to embarrassed to ask anyone else," says Pallodino, and eighteen–
year–old from Virginia. (O'Hanlon B8). In order for children to grow up with the correct information
regarding sex, it is necessary to have sex education provided to them in schools.
Even though sex education seems as if it can do no wrong, there still remain many

A Ticket to Success:
Choosing the Right Form of Sexual Education
A seventeen year old girl wakes up in the night to comfort her baby. She lives a life of exhaustion,
but she still wakes up early to attend her minimum wage job. There is not a good chance of her
attending college, because she did not finish high school and must support herself and her child.
This is due to the fact that this seventeen year old had no knowledge of contraceptives or birth
control, and she lost her partner because she had not experienced the teachings of how to handle a
mature, responsible relationship. Residing in Texas, her school has taught her that sex is wrong, for
abstinence is her only option. As a result, this seventeen year old missed out on comprehensive ...

However, many of our nation's current programs do not provide these two characteristics. The best
sexual education program is comprehensive sex education due to the knowledge presented. This
raises the question: What is comprehensive sex education and why is it the best? According to the
Planned Parenthood article "Implementing Sex Education", comprehensive sex education provides
information on many topics. The curriculum includes knowledge on body image, contraception,
safer sex, sexual behaviors, relationships, sexual health, and sexual orientation. This program covers
the taboo topics that other curriculums do not. Moreover, comprehensive sex education teaches all
ages how to care for mature relationships. Phi Delta Kappan's journal, on the importance of factual
comprehensive sex education, declares "...sexual education would be far more meaningful and
productive if it focused on developing, maintaining, and ending romantic and sexual relationships
with integrity and care" (Peterson, Weinstein, and Weissbourd). Teaching teenagers to have mature
relationships can fix many future problems. For instance, it could lower rates of divorce, mental
health diseases, and bullying. Planned Parenthood's article goes on to tell that comprehensive sex
education programs are scientifically correct and ethical. They are designed to be taught from
kindergarten to 12th grade. The goal of this program is to teach adolescents about how to
communicate with one another. Although comprehensive sex education mentions that abstinence is
the safest way to avoid unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), it does
not stress abstinence in its curriculum, nor does the program teach that sex before marriage is evil

The Importance of Sex Education
Sex education is something that should taken into consideration teaching lower class how to prevent
themselves for having more children. Lot of the young adults have no idea of the usage of birth
controls or condoms in every high school they should have sex education programs. Birth control
and condoms should be handed out in public places for the lower class could get a hold of it also
budgeting skills should be given to teach lower class how to save and manage their spending. The
cost of living is increasing so on that note, minimum wages should be raised, because for those who
have jobs or finally get a job will be able to support their family without receiving no government
aid.
Poverty is a big problem in every country but for the US and mostly like of these people could have
made better choices in life to avoid needing it. Every man who choose to get government aids can
be the most embarrassing situation. The first star to reduce welfare can be by having affordable

Importance Of Sex Education
Sex education provides information on sex, bodily development, sexuality, and aids in the making of
informed decisions in relationships regarding sex. Sex is human nature, yet it is still censored
heavily especially to adolescents who are developing and approaching the stage of puberty. Sex
education is about creating awareness and knowledge for those who are confused or have never
been talked to about human development and reproduction. Sex education should not be censored in
schools; rather it should be taught accordingly to help prevent unhealthy sexual relationships and
understand body changes as they age.
First, parents tend to avoid discussing sex and puberty with their children and still wonder why there
are many adolescents who have unprotected sex at a young age. From personal experience, my
parents always tried avoiding questions like "How are babies brought to life?" and "What is a
period?". They would shrug and say I will learn in school. Though, these sensitive topics were never
really covered in school. Of course, we had the basic sexual education classes that talked about girls
getting their periods, sex protection, infections and diseases, but certain information was still
banned. For example, both men and women genital areas were censored. What I do not understand
is why that type of information is censored. It is part of life and is something everybody will
eventually see as they start having intimate relationships. In addition, it is important for both

The Controversial Issue Of Sex Education
In the early 1960's the controversial issue of sex education started to become a more prevalent
conversation among educators and parents alike when the Food and Drug Administration approved
the sale of oral contraceptives(Szustek, 2009). Though the topic was previously being discussed as
early as mid to late 19th century, it was not deemed completely necessary or an appropriate topic for
school aged children prior to this point. In the United States more than 750,000 girls between the
ages of 15–19 experience unexpected pregnancies annually and another 19 million of all newly
reported Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) cases are young adults between the ages of 15–
25(Boonstra, 2013). The argument of whether or not sex education should be taught to students is
moot since according to a recent survey by National Public Radio about 93% of adults believe sex
education is needed (Anonymous, 2004). The more pressing issue is the content in which is to be
presented to students. There are conflicting groups that argue the validity of the methods used to
convey the importance of the apparently sensitive subject; one side of the divide are the supporters
of abstinence only education which presents a very singular approach and on the other is those that
believe in the importance of comprehensive sex education which explores a variety methods of
sexual safety.
Throughout the years the government funded programs in an attempt to combat the growing issue of
teen pregnancies and the

The Best Kind of Sex Education
There is much controversy over which form of sex education should be taught, comprehensive sex
education, or abstinence–only sex education. The definition for comprehensive sex education is
responsible and balanced sexuality education that seeks to assist young people in understanding a
positive view of sexuality, provide them with information and skills about caring for their sexual
health, and help them acquire skills to make decisions now and in the future. It is medically accurate
and provides information about abstinence and contraceptives as tools to prevent unintended
pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. On the other hand, abstinence only sex education is a
form of sex education that teaches abstinence from sex. This type of sex education promotes sexual
abstinence until marriage and avoids discussion of use of contraceptives. Comprehensive sex
education goes against some family morals and encourages teenagers to have sex. But abstinence
only sex education does not teach students enough about sex or how to protect themselves from
STDs and pregnancy. Comprehensive sex education should be mandatory in all of our nation's
schools.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, sex education was strongly effected by Victorian values.
Sex education at that time taught that sexually transmitted diseases were the result of punishment for
immoral behaviors. The discussion over what to teach children about sex in school occurred as early
as 1912. In the 1950's the

The Importance Of Sex Education
For many decades, sex education has remained an important class that many students across around
the world are required to take. Since sex education classes were first introduced into secondary
schools in the early 1900s, the government has taken steps to alter how the topic is taught. While
many parents feel that teaching sex education in a classroom setting is appropriate, a large portion of
America believes that parents are responsible for educating their child on the subject. The country
seems to be deeply divided into two groups: those who support school–led sex education, and those
who believe sex education is the responsibility of the parents. The article "Obviously, Sex Education
Should Not Be Taught In Schools" by Cullen Herout presents the opinions of one parent who is
against government–sanctioned sex education courses. Herout provides ample support and reason to
back up his thesis, but his argument is poorly written due to its strong personal bias, unreasonable
language, and lack of credible sources. *comment *another comment
The author's greatest strength in his argument was built upon his numerous premises, even though
not all of them were supported by unbiased, credible sources. Herout gave strongly opinionated
reasons why he believed that sex education should be home–led. One of his premises stated that his
"idea of education involves reading, writing, math, language, spelling, and science" (Herout, 2016)

The Importance Of Sex Education
In America, Sex Education is put on the back burner when it comes to education, which is causing a
rise in teen pregnancy rates and STI/HIV rates in the United states. "A lot of the Sex Education in
our country is based on fear and putting Sex and Sexuality as something that is not normal"
(Heather). Sex Education in America is very important to teach the youth; with help from teachers
and parents can make the youth more aware about proper sex education and how to have safe sex,
and learn healthy relationship normalities.
There is a lot of controversy over teaching comprehensive sex education among people, some
people believe that teaching comprehensive sex education causes rates of teen pregnancy and
STI/Aids rates to go up. Just like we keep up with teaching the youth Math and Science, we also
need to keep them up to date on issues like Sex Education. This is important so the youth can be
aware of these things like STIs when they are adults and know how to protect themselves, and
possibly others ."There is no evidence that teaching kids to use condoms causes a spike in sexual
activity"("Comprehensive"). In past surveys ninety percent of Americans over the age of eighteen
felt sex education was very important to include in public school curriculum.Comprehensive Sex
education has been proven statistically to be better than teaching abstinence only education. The
population council declared that Abstinence only programs are ineffective at preventing teen
pregnancy and STI's.

The Importance Of Comprehensive Sex Education
Many states in the Unites States require that public schools teach some form of sex education. Sex
education is a broad topic that covers many things including human sexuality, reproductive health,
safe sex, birth control, and abstinence, etc. There are primarily two forms of sex education that are
taught. The first of the two is an abstinence–only program, where schools teach their students not to
have sexual relations with others outside of marriage; they also do not teach about safe sex or birth
control. The other form of sex education that is taught is comprehensive sex education. Schools
where comprehensive sex education is taught teach their students about the importance of sexual
abstinence, but also teach about proper use of birth control. There are many people who have
different opinions on what kind of sex education should be taught; and the best way to teach it in
public schools.
It is not uncommon for schools that teach comprehensive sex education to pass out condoms or
some other forms of contraception to their students. "Since the late 1980s, some schools have made
condoms available to students as part of their multipronged efforts to reduce the risk of unintended
pregnancy and STDs including AIDS" (ACLU). The belief of passing out condoms in a
comprehensive sex education program is to discourage a student from engaging in risky sexual
behaviors. The distribution of condoms in some comprehensive sex education programs is not to
necessarily to promote sex, but

Sex Education in Public Schools
Sex education should be taught in public middle schools because: it decreases the chance of sexual
diseases and teenage pregnancies, it is needed in case of a parents' absence or neglect, and it also
provides more knowledge about how sex works while debunking the myths surrounding sexual
intercourse, and it makes some want to set goals for relationships. People say sex education
encourages youth to engage in sexual activities rather than preventing sex. This is true; however,
studies show that when youth are taught about sexual education, they are more likely to make better
decisions.

Students aren't getting the information that they need from the right places. Talking to friends or
learning from social media is not the best way to learn about important topics such as sex. Many
students don't know how to prevent catching an STD because the information is not available in
school. There will always be peers who will badly influence others. That is why sex education
should be implemented in schools so the youth have a reliable non–biased adult to guide them into
their own adulthood and are not just basing it off misconceptions. Myths and misconceptions play a
big role in why youth engage in sex without considering the effects it can have. Many believe sex is
an all access enjoyment activity because of the influence from outside sources like music, movies,
and television. However, I state again, that with proper knowledge from both the pros and cons of
engaging in sexual activity better choices can be made that will potentially save lives of many young
people today and saving them the embarrassment of contracting an STD. When talking about sex,
students are often embarrassed to open up about how they feel about it or what they know about it.
Some adults say sex is a personal topic and should only be discussed with close family or close
friends, therefore eliminates a class for sex education. Kids nowadays feel that to be a

Young students globally have been engaged in sex since the start of time, yet our society fails to
provide the youth with the curriculum and resources needed to make healthy and smart decisions
related to sex. 28 out 50 states do not require sex education in public schools, however, the United
States has the highest rate of teen pregnancy compared to any other country. Sex education should
be taught in public schools in order to inform students on the consequences of sexual intercourse as
well as making educated decisions on sex. In today's day and age, teenagers are sexually active even
though may not be mentally, emotionally, or financially prepared for the consequences of their
actions. Students who are uneducated on sex and what it entails, need to know about the risks and
health disparites it can cause. According to Amy S. Hedman PH.D, a professor at Minnesota State
University, and author of American Journal of Health Studies claims that, sexually transmitted
diseases are one of the most common consequences of unprotected sex and one in four high school
students have a STD. (Hedman). It is crucial that students are provided with the opportunity to learn
information regarding prevention and detection of STD's. Not only can the lack of sex education
lead to the progression of diseases, pregnancy can occur just as easily. After obtaining research on

The Importance Of Sex Education
In America, teaching children about sex is something that is seen as "inappropriate" or "wrong".
However, making sure teens and young adults know how to have safe sex is something that is
extremely important, especially now. When teens are equipped with the knowledge to make safe,
healthy decisions it helps prevent unwanted pregnancy and STD's. Children should start learning the
basics of sexuality at a young age, as young as kindergarten. When children are taught from a young
age, they benefit from the range of topics discussed. SIECUS is an organization that advocates for
comprehensive sexuality education. They define comprehensive sexuality education as programs
that start in kindergarten and continue through the 12th grade, teaching age appropriate, medically
accurate information on a range of topics. These topics include human development, relationships,
decision making, abstinence, contraception and disease prevention (National Data Shows
Comprehensive Sex Education Better at Reducing Teen Pregnancy than Abstinence–Only
Programs). While Kindergarteners do not need a full lesson about sex, introducing them to the
correct terms for their genitalia is important, thus why teaching lessons from a young age is
important. Dr. Sandy Wurtele is a professor of psychology and associate dean of the University of
Colorado who encourages teaching children from a young age. She believes it is important that
children learn the correct terms for their genitals because it can help make

The Issue Of Sex Education
When hearing the term "sex education," most will immediately think of "the talk" that parents have
with children. "The talk," a phrase widely used through everyday life, movies, television, etc. is
intended by parents to inform their children of the consequences of unsafe sex and to explain how
babies are made. Despite being a necessary conversation at home, this "talk" is generally vague and
uninformative in comparison to classes on the subject. However, this topic causes chaos when
dealing with courses in middle and high schools on it. Surprisingly, a substantial amount of adults
would argue that the more you say to younger people in regards to sex, the greater the risk of them
having unsafe sex at a much younger age than desired, despite proof that states otherwise. That type
of mindset is primarily why a vast amount of schools in the United States rely solely on having
abstinence–only sex education courses for students. I strongly believe that needs to be modified
immediately. In this paper, I will argue why students in the United States need a more
comprehensive sex education class in their curriculums in school for the following reasons: higher
rates of pregnancy in teenagers, higher rates of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, and the
negative aspects of the aftermath of teenage childbirth. My first area of discussion is teenage
pregnancy due to inadequate sex education programs in school. We can safely assume there aren't

2 out of 10 girls in the U.S. will get pregnant by the age of 20 (Tsai). Teen pregnancies and STI's in
teens are very common. Teenagers in schools across the US are at risk of getting pregnant. They
may even have a sexually transmitted disease and not know it. Many teenagers and even some
adults do not know a lot about sexual health. That is because schools are not giving out some of the
most important information to their students in sex education classes. All public schools should
require that sex education teaches more than only about abstinence and STI's. First, schools need to
make sure that the information being taught in sex education is medically correct. Many teenagers
will go through sex education, but it is a different experience for all of them because of "lack of
standardized curricula at the federal, state, and sometimes district level" (Hamilton). As of right
now, sex education is mostly based on the importance of abstinence and the types of sexually
transmitted infections. Although schools are trying to promote no sex in teens, that does not mean
that teens are not in sexual relationships. Teens who are engaging in sexual actions need to know
about safe sex because that exists although people say it does not. According to the National

do not require sex education to be medically correct" (Marinelli). Most sex education programs do

Forty percent of today's fourteen year old girls will become pregnant by the time they are nineteen.
This statistic may indicate that the sex education programs in the United States are not controlling
the effects of sex by teens.
The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate of developed countries. I believe that the
people of this nation need to look at the current sex education programs and see if they are properly
addressing the problems that sex education was intended to stop. The three major reasons why sex
education is taught in our schools are: 1) to discourage teens from having sex at younger and
younger ages; 2) to stop the spread of AIDS and other STDs; and 3) to prevent teenage pregnancy.
I believe that the sex education programs being used today are not effective at controlling these
three problems. Today's sex education programs are abstinence based. Washington has spent some
$31.7 million developing abstinence only curricular by looking at the problems sex education tries
to solve, we can improve the sex education programs by putting the problems in order of
importance. This will prove that teens having sex at a younger age is the reason for the failure of sex
education in this country. To counteract this problem abstinence should be taught to children under
the age of 16. Then when the children reach the age of 16 they need to be taught AIDS and condom
education.

Sex Education
Comprehensive sexual education has long been a contentious issue within the United States of
America. Owing largely to America's history and culture, sexual education has long been
stigmatized as unnecessary involvement in the private life, or even misattributed to rising rates of
pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. A U.S. review article, however, poses the opposite
argument – "The overwhelming weight of evidence reveals that sex education which discusses
contraception does not increase sexual activity." The understanding of sex education not only
provides young people with a better understanding of the ways in which their bodies function, but
can also help in allowing teenagers to take better care of their sexual health to include pregnancy
and STI prevention. Furthermore, sex education improves gender equality, provides accurate
information about sexually transmitted infections, and promotes interpersonal skills. Thus,
comprehensive sexual education should be introduced and made mandatory in all secondary schools
across the United States. Sex education promotes gender equality. Comprehensive sexuality
education should be taught and introduced into the high school systems at the earliest state possible

Social trends, public health interest, politics, and various polemics have always affected the essence
and teaching of sex education in the United States in different ways. Various sexual education
methods exits, however comprehensive and abstinence–only programs are the most commonly
know in public schools. Although many schools in the United States prefer to give an abstinence–
only lecture, the results shown proof that these programs are ineffective because it simply does not
fit the reality we live in, comprehensive sex education works better, and they do not offer honest nor
accurate information about human sexuality.
Providing information regarding development of the human body, sexuality, and sex relations is
what sex education programs accomplish; communicating with young people and assist them into
making the correct decisions regarding sex and their sexuality. Future of Sex Education explains that
sex education should include information in relation to puberty, reproduction, preventing sexual
violence, and gender individuality appropriate to the student's level and cultural background.
Sexual Education has been taught in schools for nearly thirty–five years; since then the abstinence–

Sex education programs were created to reduce the number of teen pregnancies, sexually transmitted

methods, safe sex, and differing sexual orientations" (Kelly, 2011, p. 153). This method may
encourage abstinence or waiting until marriage, but they also want to inform adolescents about the
potential risks and how to protect themselves from pregnancy or disease. Abstinence only education
is "an approach to educating young people that emphasizes the need to abstain from sexual relations
until marriage" (Kelly, 2011, p. 154). People who strongly believe in this method may think that
informing young people about contraception and sexual behaviors will encourage the behavior
rather than deter it. The effectiveness of a program is dependant on the training provided to the
educators and how well young people are interpreting and applying the information. According to
the textbook, "one study found that adolescents who received comprehensive sexuality education
had a slightly lower rate of intercourse and were less likely to report pregnancy, but this was not the
case with abstinence–only education" (Kelly, 2011, p. 155). This same study saw no reduction in the

Sex Education in Schools
Minnesota is ranked number six out of all states in teen birth rate. Minnesota is ranked number three
in teen pregnancy rate. The average ages for all of these results are girls aged from fifteen to
nineteen. With the most recent statics, in 2012 there were 3,295 teenage girls to give birth to a child
and in 2010 there was 146 million spent on teenage childbearing. The last statistic I found was there
were are 18.5 births per 1,000 teenage girls. (National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned
Pregnancy, pg.1) With regards to reading this information it makes me think back to my high school
years, were we taught the right information? What type of sex education should be taught to
decrease the numbers of teenage pregnancy? In my opinion students need to get taught the
comprehensive sex education program. This is a program where abstinence is taught that it is the
best way to avoid pregnancy and STI's but students are taught ways of contraception and condoms
to prevent the pregnancy and STI's is they do decide to become sexually active.
When I went onto the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) I found a survey that
indicated that more than "47 percent of all high school students say they have had sex; and 15
percent of high school students have had sex with four or more partners during their lifetime."
Among students who had sex in the prior to taking the survey, "60 percent reported condom

Sexual Education And Sex Education
The purpose of this paper is to explain the importance of sexual education and describe differences
and similarities in some of the research done on this topic. Having sexual education available to
youth is the key in reducing the number of unwanted situations in the sexual health of the
individuals. Teaching adolescents about sex is beneficial because they become aware of
consequence that might follow specific actions. This is a chance to ensure adolescents take safer
routes when deciding to become sexually active. Youth sexual education has been correlated with
preventing unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Many schools have
sexual education programs but many teenage pregnancies that are unplanned and STIs are occurring.
One reason could be because very few of these sexual education programs are attending to the
traditional social norms around sexuality and gender. It is important to consider and focus on the
traditional social norms because findings in previous studies have found those that hold traditional
social beliefs around gender and sexuality, are at greater risks of negative sexual health
consequences. Adolescents should be given the opportunity to receive the proper sexual education in
order to eliminate negative sexual health consequences. Researchers have found that individuals in
sexual education programs that address traditional social norms and the effects of these beliefs, are
less likely to agree with hegemonic masculinity

The Importance Of Sex Education
In the United States, sex education poorly informs students on how to protect themselves from both
unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted disease. When one looks at data comparing the
United States to countries with comprehensive sex education, you can see the significant difference
in numbers relating to these issues. You can also see how the lack of education among students leads
to more sexual harassment towards females. In order to combat these issues, the United States
should put in place an education strategy that is more similar to those of the countries with these low
rates. This should include information on how to have safe sex and prevent unwanted pregnancy and
STIs, instead of stressing the importance of abstinence towards adolescents. These changes could
begin locally, in New Hanover County, by changing the curriculum in schools from abstinence–
based teachings to programs that include fact–based material and information on contraceptive
methods other than just abstinence.
The US has teenage pregnancy rates three times higher than France and four times higher than the
Netherlands (Feijoo 2011). Even with limited data on Europe's STI rates, one can still tell that the
rate of transmission in the United States is much higher than it is in Europe (Feijoo 2011). The main
reason as to why these countries have lower rates of teenage pregnancy and STIs has to do with both
their sex education in the school system, but also how they view the discussion of sexual

Sex Education Is Not Just About Sex
"Sex education in not just about sex. It includes other sensitive issues like sexual health, sexual
reproduction, sexuality and others that parents often feel uncomfortable talking with their children"
(Sex Education in Schools Pros and Cons). Sex education does not start when someone is sexual
active, but mostly in Elementry School when the students have no idea what the teacher is saying.
However, in today's world sex is all around from movie posters to magazines. Perhaps teaching
children how to protect themselves early is not a poor idea. In addition, too many parents live in
denial that their children are not having sex, this leads to children not being educated on safe sex.

Birth control had been invented, this lead to premarital sex becoming more acceptable in society.
This demanded for sex education. In addition, in the 1980s the AIDS epidemic began, causing the
risk–prevention aspect of sex education. In fact this epidemic set about the best prevention of teen
pregnancy and STD's, abstinence. "Young people are going to learn about sex and our question has
to be where do we want them to learn? From the media? From their friends? Or do we want them to
learn from an educated, responsible adult" (Masland)? Besides, having students learn about
conception, the anatomy of their body, and STD's from a responsible adult rather than their peers
will be more reliable and have accurate information; also teenage peers usually know the myths
about sex not the actual information. Therfore, the extreme detail of sexual transmitted disease can
not be learned by a teenage peer because they do not know the accurate information. Finally, having
sex education in school would have the students learn about sex, they would know accurate
information on conception and sexual transmited diseased including HIV and AID'S.
Furthermore, middle school students are engaging in oral sex, and they belief that it does not count
as sex. Not knowing the consequences can have an impact on a person 's life; for example, they can
contract a sexual transmited diseas that are not currable, like HIV or AID'S. "3.2 million teenage

Sex Education Is Not Be Taught
People argue that sex education is not being taught the way that it should be these days and besides
kids being told not to have sex, they are being told how to have sex without getting diseases. Which
in some cases is true, but you never know until you look deeper into how sex education and how it
is really being taught in schools around the United States today. After doing research I found two
examples of approaches to sex education currently being used in the United States today. The places
that I found how sex education is being taught are North Carolina Franklin County Public Schools
and Texas Public School District. These two states alone teach the concept of sex education in a very
different way. Texas takes an approach at it that everyone wishes every state would look at sex
education, and North Carolina takes an approach that everyone thinks all states take in teaching kids
about sex. After reading these two article I will take and compare them to some of the experiences
that I have had with sex education, tell you which one is more comprehensive, and also get a deeper
look into what sex education is like in Texas from one of my fellow classmates. In North Carolina at
Franklin County public schools they cut AIDS and STDs out of their health textbooks and put in
their sexual education classes and teach that to their 9th graders (Donovan Pg. 1). The state law in
North Carolina is to teach abstinence until marriage in their comprehensive health education
program for

The Importance Of Sex Education
In America Sex Education is put on the back burner when it comes to education, which is causing a
rise in teen pregnancy rates and STI/HIV rates in the United states. "A lot of the Sex Education in
our country is based on fear and putting Sex and Sexuality as something that is not normal."
(Heather) Sex Education in America is very important to teach the youth; with help from teachers
and parents can make the youth more aware about proper sex education and how to have safe sex,
and learn healthy relationship normality's.
There is a lot of controversy over teaching comprehensive sex education among people, some
people believe that teaching comprehensive sex education causes rates of teen pregnancy and
STI/HIV rates to go up. Just like we keep up with teaching the youth Math and Science we also need
to keep them up to date on issues like Sex Education. This is important so the youth can be aware of
these things like STIs and HIV when they are adults and know how to protect themselves, and
possibly others ."There is no evidence that teaching kids to use condoms causes a spike in sexual
activity"(D). In past surveys ninety percent of Americans over the age of eighteen felt sex education
was very important to include in public school curriculum.Comprehensive Sex education has been
proven statistically to be better than teaching abstinence only education. The population council
declared that Abstinence only programs are ineffective at preventing teen pregnancy and STI's.

Two drastic Emergency Room cases were handled in 1998 at Mary Washington Hospital. Concerned
mothers brought their 12 year old daughters into the hospital thinking they were suffering from
severe stomach pain or even appendicitis...both girls were actually in labor (Abstinence, 2002). The
United States has the highest teen pregnancy, birth, and abortion rates in the Western world (Planned
Parenthood, 2003). Are teens getting enough knowledge on sex and how to prevent STDs and
unwanted pregnancies? Another heartbreaking statistic is that teenagers have the highest rate of
STDs of any age group, with one in four young people contracting an STD by the age of 21 (Sex–Ed
Work, 2003). Is sex education really working in school? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Abstinence–only programs have not proven to be effective in reducing sexual activity, sexual
partners, or STDs. So why ask for a raise for a program that hasn't really proven to help keep teens
safe? The main idea of Abstinence–only programs is simple..."Do it and Die." Is sex really that bad
if done safely?
Comprehensive sexuality education give teenagers the nine–yards on sexuality. Teens are taught
everything from condom use, birth control use, and where to get it. In some cases teens are taught
about homosexuality, heterosexuality, and abortions. Instead of teaching the negative side of sex it
teaches teens that sex is a healthy, normal part of life. You learn the advantages of abstinence, but
for teens who want to get involved or have already been in sexual relationships they learn how to
protect themselves. Studies show that balanced programs that promote both abstinence and safer sex
are most effective and allow young people to make responsible choices. In a review of 35 programs,
the World Health Organization found that abstinence–only programs were less effective than
programs that promoted delaying first intercourse as well as promoting safer sex practices including
use of contraceptives and condoms (Advocates for Youth, 2003). So comprehensive based education
gives teens enough information on both subjects to help them make the right decision. Unlike in
abstinence programs, if teens

Sex Education And Sexual Education
School systems in the United states have been implementing sexual education into classrooms.
Arguments are abundant when dealing with such fragile situations and there are many advantages
and disadvantages of sexual education being taught in the public schools. It seems that most parents
are either strongly for or against sex education classes, but there are a few parents that are on both
sides. In fact, there are more parents that support sex education classes. However, there are pros and
cons that must be considered by parents when dealing with sex education classes that one would not
have to consider with a less controversial topic such as math or reading. In general, parents need to
be aware of his or her own family or religious beliefs and values and know their child's intellect and
maturity levels. Debates about sex education have fixated on two different approaches: "safe sex"
courses, which inspire teens to utilize contraceptives, especially condoms, when having sex, and
"abstinence edification", which encourage teens to delay sexual activity. Teaches teens that
abstinence is the best way to prevent teen pregnancies and sexual transmitted diseases including
HIV. Throughout the United States, only some teens are given sex education, however others are not
being taught the right way leading them to make poor choices.

should be taught in America's youth. Traditionally,

The Importance Of Sex Education
According to Advocates for Youth 46 percent of high schoolers in America are sexually active. Only
20 states in America require sexual education classes and there are 35 states that have laws that say
parents have the right to keep their kids out of these classes. Almost every American will have sex in
their lifetime so having more information on it should be required. As reported by the National
Library of Medicine, America has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the industrialized world
(Sedgh, Finer, Bankole, Eilers, & Singh 2015). According to the CDC's Incidence, Prevalence, and
Cost of Sexually Transmitted Infections in the United State, people from ages 15–24 account for 50
percent of the new STDs and also America has the highest rate of STDs in the industrialized world
(CDC.gov).
While sex education classes do exist in America, they heavily rely on the abstinence–only approach.
Abstinence–only education classes teach waiting until marriage or not doing it at all. Abstinence–
only classes usually teach that adopting or being a parent is the only way to go about a pregnancy,
not teaching about abortions. Contraceptives aren't stressed in the curriculum, they do not talk about
sexual relationships that aren't heterosexual, and these classes does not distribute condoms or other
contraceptives. These classes can be just as dangerous as not learning about sex at all because the
information is inaccurate. In America, according to Statistics Brain Research Institute,

Dangers Of Sex Education
Surprisingly, only 24 states offer mandatory sex education in America. Most people who are
opposed to sex education say that they think their teenagers are too young and innocent to
understand sex education. However the website, ReCAPP.org reported in 2014 that "47% of 12th
grade high school students reported having sex" of which 'thirteen to nineteen percent of U.S. teens
starting having sex at age 15.' Teenagers obviously are having sex, and may not be forced to abstain
from sex. So mandatory sex education makes sense to teach as many teenagers as possible about
how to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies, rape, and other dangers associated with
underage sex, especially STDs (sexually transmitted disease including HIV/AIDS and Herpes
Virus). Therefore, sex education should become mandatory for all 14 year old freshmen in high
schools, in order to guarantee these teenagers are not too young to understand about the dangers of
sex before many of them start having sex by age 15. One reason that sex education should become
mandatory in all high schools, is because many teens may otherwise live in denial or be illiterate
about sex due to lack of parental teaching, thereby being ignorant about how to avoid the dangers of
sex. Parents, above all should not live in denial about their teens having sex. Yet, too many parents
admit they simply avoid the topic, or fail to properly teach their children about the dangers of sex.
For example, college friends admit that they hide

All three of these sex educators also spoke to different elements that make the current high school
sex education system damaging to its students. Ms. Corrado related: " I think one of the big things is
fear mongering around STIs. Which leads to higher incident rates instead of actually reducing
incident rates, because fear will not actually stop them from "doing it", but it just leads to people not
knowing safer sex techniques and not knowing they are transmitting [STIs]." This supports the CDC
report mentioned earlier, about the increasing number of students engaging in sexual activity and
becoming infected with STIs, despite being in abstinence–based programs. For Ms. Basler–Francis

As the SIECUS studies have shown, and from the information gathered from the Center for Sexual
Pleasure and Health Study Sex College tour, students leave comprehensive sex education classes
and workshops with more knowledge, better resources and with less shame about their desires.
Despite my obvious biases towards comprehensive sex education I truly believe that the current
system is creating the exact issues that pro–abstinence groups are trying to prevent. Due to their use
of shame and scare tactics, teens are avoiding communication with sexual/romantic partners, not
turning to adults in times of need, unknowingly contracting STIs and infecting others and feeling
all–around ashamed of the sexual desires. This is a system that turns an eye away from preventative
measures like birth control and condoms, as well as demonizes people who become pregnant and
vilifies those who have abortions. But most importantly it makes people scared to explore what they
want sexually, even more afraid to ask for what they desire and completely unable to respond to
issues where their consent was given. These are all issues that can be avoided if children in
kindergarten through twelfth grade were provided the information they needed to understand their
bodies and more importantly how to use them, and take care of them. Our culture expects people to
automatically know what to do, how to protect ourselves and be our own sexual advocates, but
cringes at the idea of actually teaching those skills. Nothing will change until we decide that people
who are asking the questions are old enough and prepared to actually hear the

Sex Education And Comprehensive Sexual Education
Let 's talk about sex. Stances on comprehensive sexual education vary, whether it be from religious
beliefs or past experiences, different views are held throughout. "It is in the interests of society in
general... for every secondary school pupil to be in receipt of sexual education" (Cumper 16). The
phrase 'it's better to be safe than sorry' applies heavily on the topic of sex education, the idea of a
pregnant and STD ridden 15 year old tends to frighten a million times more than the thought of
proper contraception use and safe sexual encounters. Although the likeliness of a parent wanting
their teen to engage in sex remains extremely low, most would prefer the latter. Comprehensive
sexual education should be implemented in all schools ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast, " The practice of avoiding sexual intercourse until marriage. Abstinence–only sex
education programs focus on abstinence as the standard and preferred lifestyle for young people and
emphasize the benefits of refraining from intercourse" ( Flynn 5). While abstinence only education
discusses contraceptives, the idea of remaining pure until marriage is pushed through out. Even
though there are numerous forms of sex ed, the former is ideal due to teenagers being
knowledgeable about either path they take, and doing so safely.
The infamous ideal of waiting until marriage, no matter if it's 'right' or not, is claimed as the set
standard of youth:"Nationally, rates of teen sexual activity have declined over the past fifteen years,
yet even so, about half of all high school youth report having sex and more than one in five report
having had four or more partners by the time they graduate from high school" (Dailard 73). Some
teens, in fact "about half" are able to abstain from sex, meaning no pregnancy, and no STDs and the
number is only growing. "There is no question...that increased abstinence meaning delayed vaginal
intercourse among young people– has played a role in reducing both teen pregnancy rates in the
United States and HIV rates in at least one developing country." Logic will tell that not having sex
leads to not getting pregnant and not transmitting sexual diseases. "... while some teens promising to

Texas Sex Education Essay
As a health science teacher, my educational philosophy is to provide my students with an inclusive,
evidence–based approach in addressing sex education in my classroom. The state–mandated
teaching standards promoting a biased, abstinence–only program, however, do little to communicate
reliable and inclusive information about sexuality. Texas provisions and education codes relating to
sex education should sustain amendments that fully address the sexual health needs of every student,
regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation or sexual expression.
Sex Education in Texas
The topic of sex education in the United States has long been a controversial provision stemming
from varying notions and disagreements about what students should be taught regarding human
sexuality. More than two decades ago, Texas Legislature made the decision to promote abstinence
over any other method of sexuality education in Texas public schools. Revised in 1995, Chapter 28
of the Texas Education Code (TEC §28.004) requires that health educators and health education
curricula in Texas public schools direct students to a standard of behavior in which abstinence from
sexual activity before marriage is the most effective way to prevent pregnancy and sexually
transmitted diseases–a provision still governing our health education classrooms today despite
overwhelming research that reveals a deep ineffectiveness of such programs.
Without question, Texas' commitment to the abstinence–only

A Study On Sex Education

  • 1. A Study On Sex Education According to the University of Kansas, historian Jeffrey P. Morgan in his book Teaching, Sex, sex education first appeared in 1913 when Chicago public schools instituted a lecture series for girls and, separately boys, on "physiology, moral hygiene, and venereal disease". Americans have viewed adolescent sexuality as an impulse to be controlled, or better, repressed. Sex education has mainly aimed at saving teenage girls from having early sex, and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. Alfred Kinsey discovered that girls and boys started having sex at younger ages than usual; this made the change in the curriculum for sex classes critical. Comprehensive sex education classes are key to our youth to ensure a healthy lifestyle, to obtain a proper education, and to achieve economic progression. Thus making comprehensive sex education classes more effective than abstinence–only classes. Abstinence–only classes became funded federally in 1996 when Congress passed the landmark Welfare Reform law. Before then, classes such as Family Life Education, and sexual history were taught. The Department of Health Science did a study and discovered that the abstinence–only classes were not bringing down the numbers enough to be effective. Now the classes are all evolving into sex education classes, which teach teenagers safe ways to have sex. The Federal Government has now stopped all funds of abstinence–only classes and started funding sex education classes. The government is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Importance Of Sex Education Furthermore, school officials should also introduce sex education to students at an early age in order to inform students about the risks of undesired pregnancies and severe transmitted diseases. At a young age, students do not tend to think about the real consequences of being sexually active and the risks they are being imposed to. The US Department of human and health services stated that, " About 77 percent of teen pregnancies are unplanned. In other words, they are unwanted or occurred "too soon," according to a national survey of adolescents" (Office of Adolescents). Due to the high percent of teen unexpected pregnancies, school officials have to impose the topic of sex education to students in order to think before comming actions they cannot change. Although at this age, the students that experience unexpected pregnancies do not want to keep the child, due to the fact that they are learn that it is a huge responsibility after getting pregnant. Teenagers that do not want to keep and take care of the child will search for way to get rid of it, which ends in miscarriages or abortion. Once again, The US Department of Human and Health Services stated, "In 2010, the majority of pregnancies to adolescent females ages 15–19 in the United States–an estimated 60 percent–ended in a live birth; 15 percent ended in a miscarriage; and 30 percent ended in an abortion" (Office of Adolescents). • 9. Comprehensive Sex Education And Comprehensive Sex Education Around the country views on sex education differ strongly, typically more religiously affiliated states promote abstinence while liberal states are in favor of comprehensive sex education. While both abstinence only sex education and comprehensive sex education aim to shield teens from the possible dangers of sex, they strongly disagree on what information should be taught and the outcome said information will have on teens. Many parents have a strong opinion on how much information their children should be taught, ranging from nothing at all to everything from human anatomy, STD's, gender studies, and sex education for queer teens. According to an article titled "Comprehensive Sex Education is Inappropriate and Harmful" some parents believe that their authority is being undermined by comprehensive programs. Comprehensive programs to encourage the use of contraceptives, even acknowledging the fact that they can be accessed without parental consent. This has been heavily debated, some parents believe it is encouraging promiscuity and deceitful behavior while others believe it is promoting their kids to make safe choices if they are too embarrassed to ask for their parents permission to get contraceptives. According to an article titled "Abstinence–Only Education is Effective" published by the American College of Pediatricians, parents and teachers need to give adolescents clear and repetitive instructions that they need to remain ... • 13. Sex Education And Sexual Education How can sexual education programs be improved to further improve the health of a country? INTRODUCTION Sex education has become increasingly normalised in the twenty–first century. Attitudes to sex have evolved as society becomes more open to discussions about relationships and sexual health. Simultaneously, the rate of teen pregnancy has dropped since the previous generation, suggesting that either teenagers are having sex later, or using contraception more effectively. As sex education is prevalent, however not compulsory in many of today's high schools, the country must question the value of this program – and the impacts on the students who undertake it. The sexual health of an individual is intrinsically connected to the overall physical and mental health of the country. The health of individuals makes up the health of a population – it seems quite clear that, in a perfect world, sexual education would improve national health. Countries around the world have different attitudes towards sex education, and opinions on the most effective way to teach it – and the overall health of these populations is equally as diverse. Australia as a nation must investigate the effects of sexual education, to ensure its program is the most effective. COMPARE DIFFERENT TACTICS ROUND THE WORLD European countries have the lowest rates of teen pregnancies, with fewer than four births per thousand. These countries include Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy. These countries' ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Sex Education and the Classroom In today's society there is an on going debate over sex education and its influence on our children. "The question is no longer should sex education be taught, but rather how it should be taught" (DeCarlo). With teenage pregnancy rates higher than ever and the imminent threat of the contraction of STD's, such as HIV, the role of sex education in the school is of greater importance now then ever before. By denying children sex education you are in a sense sheltering them from the harsh realities they are bound to encounter. Sex education has become an essential part of the curriculum and by removing the information provided by this class we'll be voluntarily putting our children in danger. During the teenage years every boy and girl ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since family structure has changed, so have the way children are being raised. Society cannot count on all parents to instill morals into their children and teach them the facts of life or even the difference between right and wrong these days. Parents just don't have the time for it. Recently the Vatican released a document stating that " parents alone cannot give children the positive sex education they need to develop healthy attitudes towards sex" (Euchner). Another view on the subject taken by the Nebraska Public School system is that sex education in today's society is to complicated to be left to "the varying influences of parental attitudes and haphazard environmental exposure" (Chaumont et al.). Besides, even if the parent were around more often then not, the chances of a child approaching their parent about the "bird and the bees" is very unlikely. These children need to have a place were the information on this touchy subject is provided to them without them needing to ask. "Kids don't go asking their parents, this is the only way for them to find out answers because they are to embarrassed to ask anyone else," says Pallodino, and eighteen– year–old from Virginia. (O'Hanlon B8). In order for children to grow up with the correct information regarding sex, it is necessary to have sex education provided to them in schools. Even though sex education seems as if it can do no wrong, there still remain many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Comprehensive Sex Education A Ticket to Success: Choosing the Right Form of Sexual Education A seventeen year old girl wakes up in the night to comfort her baby. She lives a life of exhaustion, but she still wakes up early to attend her minimum wage job. There is not a good chance of her attending college, because she did not finish high school and must support herself and her child. This is due to the fact that this seventeen year old had no knowledge of contraceptives or birth control, and she lost her partner because she had not experienced the teachings of how to handle a mature, responsible relationship. Residing in Texas, her school has taught her that sex is wrong, for abstinence is her only option. As a result, this seventeen year old missed out on comprehensive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, many of our nation's current programs do not provide these two characteristics. The best sexual education program is comprehensive sex education due to the knowledge presented. This raises the question: What is comprehensive sex education and why is it the best? According to the Planned Parenthood article "Implementing Sex Education", comprehensive sex education provides information on many topics. The curriculum includes knowledge on body image, contraception, safer sex, sexual behaviors, relationships, sexual health, and sexual orientation. This program covers the taboo topics that other curriculums do not. Moreover, comprehensive sex education teaches all ages how to care for mature relationships. Phi Delta Kappan's journal, on the importance of factual comprehensive sex education, declares "...sexual education would be far more meaningful and productive if it focused on developing, maintaining, and ending romantic and sexual relationships with integrity and care" (Peterson, Weinstein, and Weissbourd). Teaching teenagers to have mature relationships can fix many future problems. For instance, it could lower rates of divorce, mental health diseases, and bullying. Planned Parenthood's article goes on to tell that comprehensive sex education programs are scientifically correct and ethical. They are designed to be taught from kindergarten to 12th grade. The goal of this program is to teach adolescents about how to communicate with one another. Although comprehensive sex education mentions that abstinence is the safest way to avoid unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), it does not stress abstinence in its curriculum, nor does the program teach that sex before marriage is evil and ... • 25. The Importance of Sex Education Sex education is something that should taken into consideration teaching lower class how to prevent themselves for having more children. Lot of the young adults have no idea of the usage of birth controls or condoms in every high school they should have sex education programs. Birth control and condoms should be handed out in public places for the lower class could get a hold of it also budgeting skills should be given to teach lower class how to save and manage their spending. The cost of living is increasing so on that note, minimum wages should be raised, because for those who have jobs or finally get a job will be able to support their family without receiving no government aid. Poverty is a big problem in every country but for the US and mostly like of these people could have made better choices in life to avoid needing it. Every man who choose to get government aids can be the most embarrassing situation. The first star to reduce welfare can be by having affordable mortgage's, free education, handling out free birth controls and accessing to health care legalizing marijuana it will be less crimes. marginal or the residual poor refuse to get a job because having these benefits by not going to work by not even trying. these government aid should only given to people who choose to have a better lfe meaning apply for jobs or trying to a career or education but not for people who have no type of ambition. • 29. Importance Of Sex Education Sex education provides information on sex, bodily development, sexuality, and aids in the making of informed decisions in relationships regarding sex. Sex is human nature, yet it is still censored heavily especially to adolescents who are developing and approaching the stage of puberty. Sex education is about creating awareness and knowledge for those who are confused or have never been talked to about human development and reproduction. Sex education should not be censored in schools; rather it should be taught accordingly to help prevent unhealthy sexual relationships and understand body changes as they age. First, parents tend to avoid discussing sex and puberty with their children and still wonder why there are many adolescents who have unprotected sex at a young age. From personal experience, my parents always tried avoiding questions like "How are babies brought to life?" and "What is a period?". They would shrug and say I will learn in school. Though, these sensitive topics were never really covered in school. Of course, we had the basic sexual education classes that talked about girls getting their periods, sex protection, infections and diseases, but certain information was still banned. For example, both men and women genital areas were censored. What I do not understand is why that type of information is censored. It is part of life and is something everybody will eventually see as they start having intimate relationships. In addition, it is important for both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Controversial Issue Of Sex Education In the early 1960's the controversial issue of sex education started to become a more prevalent conversation among educators and parents alike when the Food and Drug Administration approved the sale of oral contraceptives(Szustek, 2009). Though the topic was previously being discussed as early as mid to late 19th century, it was not deemed completely necessary or an appropriate topic for school aged children prior to this point. In the United States more than 750,000 girls between the ages of 15–19 experience unexpected pregnancies annually and another 19 million of all newly reported Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) cases are young adults between the ages of 15– 25(Boonstra, 2013). The argument of whether or not sex education should be taught to students is moot since according to a recent survey by National Public Radio about 93% of adults believe sex education is needed (Anonymous, 2004). The more pressing issue is the content in which is to be presented to students. There are conflicting groups that argue the validity of the methods used to convey the importance of the apparently sensitive subject; one side of the divide are the supporters of abstinence only education which presents a very singular approach and on the other is those that believe in the importance of comprehensive sex education which explores a variety methods of sexual safety. • 37. The Best Kind of Sex Education There is much controversy over which form of sex education should be taught, comprehensive sex education, or abstinence–only sex education. The definition for comprehensive sex education is responsible and balanced sexuality education that seeks to assist young people in understanding a positive view of sexuality, provide them with information and skills about caring for their sexual health, and help them acquire skills to make decisions now and in the future. It is medically accurate and provides information about abstinence and contraceptives as tools to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. On the other hand, abstinence only sex education is a form of sex education that teaches abstinence from sex. This type of sex education promotes sexual abstinence until marriage and avoids discussion of use of contraceptives. Comprehensive sex education goes against some family morals and encourages teenagers to have sex. But abstinence only sex education does not teach students enough about sex or how to protect themselves from STDs and pregnancy. Comprehensive sex education should be mandatory in all of our nation's schools. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, sex education was strongly effected by Victorian values. Sex education at that time taught that sexually transmitted diseases were the result of punishment for immoral behaviors. The discussion over what to teach children about sex in school occurred as early as 1912. In the 1950's the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Importance Of Sex Education For many decades, sex education has remained an important class that many students across around the world are required to take. Since sex education classes were first introduced into secondary schools in the early 1900s, the government has taken steps to alter how the topic is taught. While many parents feel that teaching sex education in a classroom setting is appropriate, a large portion of America believes that parents are responsible for educating their child on the subject. The country seems to be deeply divided into two groups: those who support school–led sex education, and those who believe sex education is the responsibility of the parents. The article "Obviously, Sex Education Should Not Be Taught In Schools" by Cullen Herout presents the opinions of one parent who is against government–sanctioned sex education courses. Herout provides ample support and reason to back up his thesis, but his argument is poorly written due to its strong personal bias, unreasonable language, and lack of credible sources. *comment *another comment The author's greatest strength in his argument was built upon his numerous premises, even though not all of them were supported by unbiased, credible sources. Herout gave strongly opinionated reasons why he believed that sex education should be home–led. One of his premises stated that his "idea of education involves reading, writing, math, language, spelling, and science" (Herout, 2016) and that time spent on sex education is time that is ... • 45. The Importance Of Sex Education In America, Sex Education is put on the back burner when it comes to education, which is causing a rise in teen pregnancy rates and STI/HIV rates in the United states. "A lot of the Sex Education in our country is based on fear and putting Sex and Sexuality as something that is not normal" (Heather). Sex Education in America is very important to teach the youth; with help from teachers and parents can make the youth more aware about proper sex education and how to have safe sex, and learn healthy relationship normalities. There is a lot of controversy over teaching comprehensive sex education among people, some people believe that teaching comprehensive sex education causes rates of teen pregnancy and STI/Aids rates to go up. Just like we keep up with teaching the youth Math and Science, we also need to keep them up to date on issues like Sex Education. This is important so the youth can be aware of these things like STIs when they are adults and know how to protect themselves, and possibly others ."There is no evidence that teaching kids to use condoms causes a spike in sexual activity"("Comprehensive"). In past surveys ninety percent of Americans over the age of eighteen felt sex education was very important to include in public school curriculum.Comprehensive Sex education has been proven statistically to be better than teaching abstinence only education. The population council declared that Abstinence only programs are ineffective at preventing teen pregnancy and STI's. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. The Importance Of Comprehensive Sex Education Many states in the Unites States require that public schools teach some form of sex education. Sex education is a broad topic that covers many things including human sexuality, reproductive health, safe sex, birth control, and abstinence, etc. There are primarily two forms of sex education that are taught. The first of the two is an abstinence–only program, where schools teach their students not to have sexual relations with others outside of marriage; they also do not teach about safe sex or birth control. The other form of sex education that is taught is comprehensive sex education. Schools where comprehensive sex education is taught teach their students about the importance of sexual abstinence, but also teach about proper use of birth control. There are many people who have different opinions on what kind of sex education should be taught; and the best way to teach it in public schools. It is not uncommon for schools that teach comprehensive sex education to pass out condoms or some other forms of contraception to their students. "Since the late 1980s, some schools have made condoms available to students as part of their multipronged efforts to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy and STDs including AIDS" (ACLU). The belief of passing out condoms in a comprehensive sex education program is to discourage a student from engaging in risky sexual behaviors. Sex Education in Public Schools Sex education should be taught in public middle schools because: it decreases the chance of sexual diseases and teenage pregnancies, it is needed in case of a parents' absence or neglect, and it also provides more knowledge about how sex works while debunking the myths surrounding sexual intercourse, and it makes some want to set goals for relationships. People say sex education encourages youth to engage in sexual activities rather than preventing sex. This is true; however, studies show that when youth are taught about sexual education, they are more likely to make better decisions. Students aren't getting the information that they need from the right places. Talking to friends or learning from social media is not the best way to learn about important topics such as sex. Many students don't know how to prevent catching an STD because the information is not available in school. There will always be peers who will badly influence others. That is why sex education should be implemented in schools so the youth have a reliable non–biased adult to guide them into their own adulthood and are not just basing it off misconceptions. Myths and misconceptions play a big role in why youth engage in sex without considering the effects it can have. Many believe sex is an all access enjoyment activity because of the influence from outside sources like music, movies, and television. However, I state again, that with proper knowledge from both the pros and cons of engaging in sexual activity better choices can be made that will potentially save lives of many young people today and saving them the embarrassment of contracting an STD. When talking about sex, students are often embarrassed to open up about how they feel about it or what they know about it. Some adults say sex is a personal topic and should only be discussed with close family or close friends, therefore eliminates a class for sex education. Kids nowadays feel that to be a ... Persuasive Sex Education Young students globally have been engaged in sex since the start of time, yet our society fails to provide the youth with the curriculum and resources needed to make healthy and smart decisions related to sex. 28 out 50 states do not require sex education in public schools, however, the United States has the highest rate of teen pregnancy compared to any other country. Sex education should be taught in public schools in order to inform students on the consequences of sexual intercourse as well as making educated decisions on sex. In today's day and age, teenagers are sexually active even though may not be mentally, emotionally, or financially prepared for the consequences of their actions. Students who are uneducated on sex and what it entails, need to know about the risks and health disparites it can cause. According to Amy S. Hedman PH.D, a professor at Minnesota State University, and author of American Journal of Health Studies claims that, sexually transmitted diseases are one of the most common consequences of unprotected sex and one in four high school students have a STD. (Hedman). It is crucial that students are provided with the opportunity to learn information regarding prevention and detection of STD's. Not only can the lack of sex education lead to the progression of diseases, pregnancy can occur just as easily. • 61. The Importance Of Sex Education In America, teaching children about sex is something that is seen as "inappropriate" or "wrong". However, making sure teens and young adults know how to have safe sex is something that is extremely important, especially now. When teens are equipped with the knowledge to make safe, healthy decisions it helps prevent unwanted pregnancy and STD's. Children should start learning the basics of sexuality at a young age, as young as kindergarten. When children are taught from a young age, they benefit from the range of topics discussed. SIECUS is an organization that advocates for comprehensive sexuality education. They define comprehensive sexuality education as programs that start in kindergarten and continue through the 12th grade, teaching age appropriate, medically accurate information on a range of topics. These topics include human development, relationships, decision making, abstinence, contraception and disease prevention (National Data Shows Comprehensive Sex Education Better at Reducing Teen Pregnancy than Abstinence–Only Programs). While Kindergarteners do not need a full lesson about sex, introducing them to the correct terms for their genitalia is important, thus why teaching lessons from a young age is important. Dr. Sandy Wurtele is a professor of psychology and associate dean of the University of Colorado who encourages teaching children from a young age. • 65. The Issue Of Sex Education When hearing the term "sex education," most will immediately think of "the talk" that parents have with children. "The talk," a phrase widely used through everyday life, movies, television, etc. is intended by parents to inform their children of the consequences of unsafe sex and to explain how babies are made. Despite being a necessary conversation at home, this "talk" is generally vague and uninformative in comparison to classes on the subject. However, this topic causes chaos when dealing with courses in middle and high schools on it. Surprisingly, a substantial amount of adults would argue that the more you say to younger people in regards to sex, the greater the risk of them having unsafe sex at a much younger age than desired, despite proof that states otherwise. That type of mindset is primarily why a vast amount of schools in the United States rely solely on having abstinence–only sex education courses for students. I strongly believe that needs to be modified immediately. In this paper, I will argue why students in the United States need a more comprehensive sex education class in their curriculums in school for the following reasons: higher rates of pregnancy in teenagers, higher rates of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, and the negative aspects of the aftermath of teenage childbirth. My first area of discussion is teenage pregnancy due to inadequate sex education programs in school. We can safely assume there aren't any human beings ages 12 to 17 in ... • 69. The Issue Of Sex Education 2 out of 10 girls in the U.S. will get pregnant by the age of 20 (Tsai). Teen pregnancies and STI's in teens are very common. Teenagers in schools across the US are at risk of getting pregnant. They may even have a sexually transmitted disease and not know it. Many teenagers and even some adults do not know a lot about sexual health. That is because schools are not giving out some of the most important information to their students in sex education classes. All public schools should require that sex education teaches more than only about abstinence and STI's. First, schools need to make sure that the information being taught in sex education is medically correct. Many teenagers will go through sex education, but it is a different experience for all of them because of "lack of standardized curricula at the federal, state, and sometimes district level" (Hamilton). As of right now, sex education is mostly based on the importance of abstinence and the types of sexually transmitted infections. Although schools are trying to promote no sex in teens, that does not mean that teens are not in sexual relationships. Teens who are engaging in sexual actions need to know about safe sex because that exists although people say it does not. According to the National Conference of State Legislature, "38 States do not require mandated sex education and another 41 do not require sex education to be medically correct" (Marinelli). • 73. Persuasive Essay On Sex Education Forty percent of today's fourteen year old girls will become pregnant by the time they are nineteen. This statistic may indicate that the sex education programs in the United States are not controlling the effects of sex by teens. The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate of developed countries. I believe that the people of this nation need to look at the current sex education programs and see if they are properly addressing the problems that sex education was intended to stop. The three major reasons why sex education is taught in our schools are: 1) to discourage teens from having sex at younger and younger ages; 2) to stop the spread of AIDS and other STDs; and 3) to prevent teenage pregnancy. I believe that the sex education programs being used today are not effective at controlling these three problems. Today's sex education programs are abstinence based. Washington has spent some $31.7 million developing abstinence only curricular by looking at the problems sex education tries to solve, we can improve the sex education programs by putting the problems in order of importance. This will prove that teens having sex at a younger age is the reason for the failure of sex education in this country. To counteract this problem abstinence should be taught to children under the age of 16. Then when the children reach the age of 16 they need to be taught AIDS and condom education. AIDS and other STDs are an important reason we have sex education. AIDS education is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Sex Education : Comprehensive Sexual Education Sex Education Comprehensive sexual education has long been a contentious issue within the United States of America. Owing largely to America's history and culture, sexual education has long been stigmatized as unnecessary involvement in the private life, or even misattributed to rising rates of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. A U.S. review article, however, poses the opposite argument – "The overwhelming weight of evidence reveals that sex education which discusses contraception does not increase sexual activity." The understanding of sex education not only provides young people with a better understanding of the ways in which their bodies function, but can also help in allowing teenagers to take better care of their sexual health to include pregnancy and STI prevention. Furthermore, sex education improves gender equality, provides accurate information about sexually transmitted infections, and promotes interpersonal skills. Thus, comprehensive sexual education should be introduced and made mandatory in all secondary schools across the United States. Sex education promotes gender equality. Comprehensive sexuality education should be taught and introduced into the high school systems at the earliest state possible and within reason while the human body is still in the development process. Since a young body will continue to develop, one will eventually experience and make the life–changing decision regarding his or her sexual and reproductive health without ... Sex Education And Sexual Education Essay Social trends, public health interest, politics, and various polemics have always affected the essence and teaching of sex education in the United States in different ways. Various sexual education methods exits, however comprehensive and abstinence–only programs are the most commonly know in public schools. Although many schools in the United States prefer to give an abstinence– only lecture, the results shown proof that these programs are ineffective because it simply does not fit the reality we live in, comprehensive sex education works better, and they do not offer honest nor accurate information about human sexuality. Providing information regarding development of the human body, sexuality, and sex relations is what sex education programs accomplish; communicating with young people and assist them into making the correct decisions regarding sex and their sexuality. Future of Sex Education explains that sex education should include information in relation to puberty, reproduction, preventing sexual violence, and gender individuality appropriate to the student's level and cultural background. Sexual Education has been taught in schools for nearly thirty–five years; since then the abstinence– only programs have existed as well. Adolescent Family Life Act (AFLA) is known for being the originator of today's abstinence–only–until–marriage programs which goals were to avoid prenuptial teenage pregnancy through self–restraint, encourage adoption among pregnant teenagers, and to ... As these numbers are shocking to many Americans, schools still have not taken the initiative to teach efficient sex education. Although some teenagers are receiving sex education, most are not being taught it in a successful way. Sex education can be explained in two different procedures: comprehensive or abstinence only. The difference between the two is that comprehensive sex education teaches abstinence as a secondary choice, and teens that decide not to wait should be informed on how to use birth control when participating in sexual activity. • 93. Sex Education Programs Sex education programs were created to reduce the number of teen pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV/AIDS. For a long time there has been a debate over which sex education method, comprehensive or abstinence only, should be taught to adolescents. Comprehensive sex education is an approach that "advocates giving teens age–appropriate instruction concerning birth control methods, safe sex, and differing sexual orientations" (Kelly, 2011, p. 153). This method may encourage abstinence or waiting until marriage, but they also want to inform adolescents about the potential risks and how to protect themselves from pregnancy or disease. Abstinence only education is "an approach to educating young people that emphasizes the need to abstain from sexual relations until marriage" (Kelly, 2011, p. 154). People who strongly believe in this method may think that informing young people about contraception and sexual behaviors will encourage the behavior rather than deter it. The effectiveness of a program is dependant on the training provided to the educators and how well young people are interpreting and applying the information. According to the textbook, "one study found that adolescents who received comprehensive sexuality education had a slightly lower rate of intercourse and were less likely to report pregnancy, but this was not the case with abstinence–only education" (Kelly, 2011, p. 155). • 97. Should Sex Education Be Taught? Carley Siegel Position Paper Midterm 10/15/14 Sex Education in Schools Minnesota is ranked number six out of all states in teen birth rate. Minnesota is ranked number three in teen pregnancy rate. The average ages for all of these results are girls aged from fifteen to nineteen. With the most recent statics, in 2012 there were 3,295 teenage girls to give birth to a child and in 2010 there was 146 million spent on teenage childbearing. The last statistic I found was there were are 18.5 births per 1,000 teenage girls. (National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, pg.1) With regards to reading this information it makes me think back to my high school years, were we taught the right information? What type of sex education should be taught to decrease the numbers of teenage pregnancy? In my opinion students need to get taught the comprehensive sex education program. This is a program where abstinence is taught that it is the best way to avoid pregnancy and STI's but students are taught ways of contraception and condoms to prevent the pregnancy and STI's is they do decide to become sexually active. When I went onto the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) I found a survey that indicated that more than "47 percent of all high school students say they have had sex; and 15 percent of high school students have had sex with four or more partners during their lifetime." • 101. Sexual Education And Sex Education The purpose of this paper is to explain the importance of sexual education and describe differences and similarities in some of the research done on this topic. Having sexual education available to youth is the key in reducing the number of unwanted situations in the sexual health of the individuals. Teaching adolescents about sex is beneficial because they become aware of consequence that might follow specific actions. This is a chance to ensure adolescents take safer routes when deciding to become sexually active. Youth sexual education has been correlated with preventing unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Many schools have sexual education programs but many teenage pregnancies that are unplanned and STIs are occurring. One reason could be because very few of these sexual education programs are attending to the traditional social norms around sexuality and gender. It is important to consider and focus on the traditional social norms because findings in previous studies have found those that hold traditional social beliefs around gender and sexuality, are at greater risks of negative sexual health consequences. Adolescents should be given the opportunity to receive the proper sexual education in order to eliminate negative sexual health consequences. Researchers have found that individuals in sexual education programs that address traditional social norms and the effects of these beliefs, are less likely to agree with hegemonic masculinity ... • 105. The Importance Of Sex Education In the United States, sex education poorly informs students on how to protect themselves from both unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted disease. When one looks at data comparing the United States to countries with comprehensive sex education, you can see the significant difference in numbers relating to these issues. You can also see how the lack of education among students leads to more sexual harassment towards females. In order to combat these issues, the United States should put in place an education strategy that is more similar to those of the countries with these low rates. This should include information on how to have safe sex and prevent unwanted pregnancy and STIs, instead of stressing the importance of abstinence towards adolescents. These changes could begin locally, in New Hanover County, by changing the curriculum in schools from abstinence– based teachings to programs that include fact–based material and information on contraceptive methods other than just abstinence. The US has teenage pregnancy rates three times higher than France and four times higher than the Netherlands (Feijoo 2011). Even with limited data on Europe's STI rates, one can still tell that the rate of transmission in the United States is much higher than it is in Europe (Feijoo 2011). The main reason as to why these countries have lower rates of teenage pregnancy and STIs has to do with both their sex education in the school system, but also how they view the discussion of sexual ... However, in today's world sex is all around from movie posters to magazines. Perhaps teaching children how to protect themselves early is not a poor idea. "Young people are going to learn about sex and our question has to be where do we want them to learn? From the media? From their friends? Or do we want them to learn from an educated, responsible adult" (Masland)? Besides, having students learn about conception, the anatomy of their body, and STD's from a responsible adult rather than their peers will be more reliable and have accurate information; also teenage peers usually know the myths about sex not the actual information. Therfore, the extreme detail of sexual transmitted disease can not be learned by a teenage peer because they do not know the accurate information. Sex Education Is Not Be Taught People argue that sex education is not being taught the way that it should be these days and besides kids being told not to have sex, they are being told how to have sex without getting diseases. Which in some cases is true, but you never know until you look deeper into how sex education and how it is really being taught in schools around the United States today. After doing research I found two examples of approaches to sex education currently being used in the United States today. The places that I found how sex education is being taught are North Carolina Franklin County Public Schools and Texas Public School District. These two states alone teach the concept of sex education in a very different way. Texas takes an approach at it that everyone wishes every state would look at sex education, and North Carolina takes an approach that everyone thinks all states take in teaching kids about sex. After reading these two article I will take and compare them to some of the experiences that I have had with sex education, tell you which one is more comprehensive, and also get a deeper look into what sex education is like in Texas from one of my fellow classmates. The Importance Of Sex Education In America Sex Education is put on the back burner when it comes to education, which is causing a rise in teen pregnancy rates and STI/HIV rates in the United states. "A lot of the Sex Education in our country is based on fear and putting Sex and Sexuality as something that is not normal." (Heather) Sex Education in America is very important to teach the youth; with help from teachers and parents can make the youth more aware about proper sex education and how to have safe sex, and learn healthy relationship normality's. There is a lot of controversy over teaching comprehensive sex education among people, some people believe that teaching comprehensive sex education causes rates of teen pregnancy and STI/HIV rates to go up. Just like we keep up with teaching the youth Math and Science we also need to keep them up to date on issues like Sex Education. This is important so the youth can be aware of these things like STIs and HIV when they are adults and know how to protect themselves, and possibly others ."There is no evidence that teaching kids to use condoms causes a spike in sexual activity"(D). In past surveys ninety percent of Americans over the age of eighteen felt sex education was very important to include in public school curriculum.Comprehensive Sex education has been proven statistically to be better than teaching abstinence only education. The United States has the highest teen pregnancy, birth, and abortion rates in the Western world (Planned Parenthood, 2003). Are teens getting enough knowledge on sex and how to prevent STDs and unwanted pregnancies? So why ask for a raise for a program that hasn't really proven to help keep teens safe? The main idea of Abstinence–only programs is simple..."Do it and Die." Is sex really that bad if done safely? Comprehensive sexuality education give teenagers the nine–yards on sexuality. Teens are taught everything from condom use, birth control use, and where to get it. In some cases teens are taught about homosexuality, heterosexuality, and abortions. Instead of teaching the negative side of sex it teaches teens that sex is a healthy, normal part of life. You learn the advantages of abstinence, but for teens who want to get involved or have already been in sexual relationships they learn how to protect themselves. Studies show that balanced programs that promote both abstinence and safer sex are most effective and allow young people to make responsible choices. In a review of 35 programs, the World Health Organization found that abstinence–only programs were less effective than programs that promoted delaying first intercourse as well as promoting safer sex practices including use of contraceptives and condoms (Advocates for Youth, 2003). • 125. Sex Education And Sexual Education School systems in the United states have been implementing sexual education into classrooms. Arguments are abundant when dealing with such fragile situations and there are many advantages and disadvantages of sexual education being taught in the public schools. It seems that most parents are either strongly for or against sex education classes, but there are a few parents that are on both sides. In fact, there are more parents that support sex education classes. However, there are pros and cons that must be considered by parents when dealing with sex education classes that one would not have to consider with a less controversial topic such as math or reading. In general, parents need to be aware of his or her own family or religious beliefs and values and know their child's intellect and maturity levels. Debates about sex education have fixated on two different approaches: "safe sex" courses, which inspire teens to utilize contraceptives, especially condoms, when having sex, and "abstinence edification", which encourage teens to delay sexual activity. Teaches teens that abstinence is the best way to prevent teen pregnancies and sexual transmitted diseases including HIV. • 129. The Importance Of Sex Education According to Advocates for Youth 46 percent of high schoolers in America are sexually active. Only 20 states in America require sexual education classes and there are 35 states that have laws that say parents have the right to keep their kids out of these classes. Almost every American will have sex in their lifetime so having more information on it should be required. As reported by the National Library of Medicine, America has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the industrialized world (Sedgh, Finer, Bankole, Eilers, & Singh 2015). According to the CDC's Incidence, Prevalence, and Cost of Sexually Transmitted Infections in the United State, people from ages 15–24 account for 50 percent of the new STDs and also America has the highest rate of STDs in the industrialized world (CDC.gov). While sex education classes do exist in America, they heavily rely on the abstinence–only approach. Abstinence–only education classes teach waiting until marriage or not doing it at all. Abstinence– only classes usually teach that adopting or being a parent is the only way to go about a pregnancy, not teaching about abortions. Contraceptives aren't stressed in the curriculum, they do not talk about sexual relationships that aren't heterosexual, and these classes does not distribute condoms or other contraceptives. • 133. Dangers Of Sex Education Surprisingly, only 24 states offer mandatory sex education in America. Most people who are opposed to sex education say that they think their teenagers are too young and innocent to understand sex education. However the website, ReCAPP.org reported in 2014 that "47% of 12th grade high school students reported having sex" of which 'thirteen to nineteen percent of U.S. teens starting having sex at age 15.' Teenagers obviously are having sex, and may not be forced to abstain from sex. So mandatory sex education makes sense to teach as many teenagers as possible about how to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies, rape, and other dangers associated with underage sex, especially STDs (sexually transmitted disease including HIV/AIDS and Herpes Virus). Therefore, sex education should become mandatory for all 14 year old freshmen in high schools, in order to guarantee these teenagers are not too young to understand about the dangers of sex before many of them start having sex by age 15. One reason that sex education should become mandatory in all high schools, is because many teens may otherwise live in denial or be illiterate about sex due to lack of parental teaching, thereby being ignorant about how to avoid the dangers of sex. Parents, above all should not live in denial about their teens having sex. Yet, too many parents admit they simply avoid the topic, or fail to properly teach their children about the dangers of sex. Due to their use of shame and scare tactics, teens are avoiding communication with sexual/romantic partners, not turning to adults in times of need, unknowingly contracting STIs and infecting others and feeling all–around ashamed of the sexual desires. This is a system that turns an eye away from preventative measures like birth control and condoms, as well as demonizes people who become pregnant and vilifies those who have abortions. • 149. Sex Education And Comprehensive Sexual Education Let 's talk about sex. Stances on comprehensive sexual education vary, whether it be from religious beliefs or past experiences, different views are held throughout. "It is in the interests of society in general... for every secondary school pupil to be in receipt of sexual education" (Cumper 16). The phrase 'it's better to be safe than sorry' applies heavily on the topic of sex education, the idea of a pregnant and STD ridden 15 year old tends to frighten a million times more than the thought of proper contraception use and safe sexual encounters. Although the likeliness of a parent wanting their teen to engage in sex remains extremely low, most would prefer the latter. Comprehensive sexual education should be implemented in all schools ... Abstinence–only sex education programs focus on abstinence as the standard and preferred lifestyle for young people and emphasize the benefits of refraining from intercourse" ( Flynn 5). While abstinence only education discusses contraceptives, the idea of remaining pure until marriage is pushed through out. Logic will tell that not having sex leads to not getting pregnant and not transmitting sexual diseases. "... while some teens promising to abstain from sex until ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Texas Sex Education Essay As a health science teacher, my educational philosophy is to provide my students with an inclusive, evidence–based approach in addressing sex education in my classroom. The state–mandated teaching standards promoting a biased, abstinence–only program, however, do little to communicate reliable and inclusive information about sexuality. Texas provisions and education codes relating to sex education should sustain amendments that fully address the sexual health needs of every student, regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation or sexual expression. Sex Education in Texas The topic of sex education in the United States has long been a controversial provision stemming from varying notions and disagreements about what students should be taught regarding human sexuality. More than two decades ago, Texas Legislature made the decision to promote abstinence over any other method of sexuality education in Texas public schools. Revised in 1995, Chapter 28 of the Texas Education Code (TEC §28.004) requires that health educators and health education curricula in Texas public schools direct students to a standard of behavior in which abstinence from sexual activity before marriage is the most effective way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases–a provision still governing our health education classrooms today despite overwhelming research that reveals a deep ineffectiveness of such programs. Without question, Texas' commitment to the abstinence–only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
