Quick Peek about me and CLC
• Communication Instructor
and eLearning Coordinator
• One of the first to teach an
online class at CLC
• Teaching Full-Time since 2001
• Most of that, also completely
online (asynchronously)
Quick Peek about me and CLC
• Comprehensive Community
and Technical College
• Multi-campus college (I’m
on Brainerd campus)
• Part of Minnesota State
System
• Serve about 5,500
students
Quick Peek about Open Pedagogy
• 1979 Claude Paquette referenced the term (time-stamping
it as 10+ years)
• 2013 David Wiley’s rewrote and “revisioned” the term in
his blog to how we most often reference it today
• Stemmed from Open Educational Resources (OER) work
• Reflection of his 4 (now 5) R’s of Open Content
Source: Scott Curtis, OER Lead, UMKC Libraries https://tinyurl.com/3c4h24nd
David Wiley’s 5 R’s of Open Content
• Reuse – the right to use the content in a wide range of ways (e.g., in a class,
in a study group, on a website, in a video)
• Revise – the right to adapt, adjust, modify, or alter the content itself (e.g.,
translate the content into another language)
• Remix – the right to combine the original or revised content with other open
content to create something new (e.g., incorporate the content into a mashup)
• Redistribute – the right to share copies of the original content, your
revisions, or your remixes with others (e.g., give a copy of the content to a
friend)
• Retain – the right to make, own, and control copies of the content (e.g.,
download, own, store, and manage)

What’s Open Pedagogy?
Breaking it Down
• OPEN
• Defined by UNESCO as
“educational materials that are
in the public domain or that are
introduced with an open license”
• “Open” often mistaken for just
meaning free
• Actually “free with perpetual
permission”
• PEDAGOGY
• Practice and/or method of
teaching
• How we teach, not what we
teach
• Sometimes called “Open
Educational Practices” (OEP)
• Love that “practice” is a noun
and a verb. Cool, right?
Sources: https://en.unesco.org/themes/building-knowledge-societies/oer and https://openedreader.org/chapter/open-content/
Traditional versus Open Approach
Traditional Approach
• Teacher decides
• Single learning style
• Information stays within
the classroom
• Disposable Assignment
(Linear & Finite)
Open Pedagogy Approach
• Student decides
• Flexible learning styles
• Information available
outside of the classroom
• Reusable (Dynamic &
Infinite)

POWERFUL!
TEACHING 1 =
LEARNING∞
We all can do that!
No matter the grade or
level 
Peek at the Honor’s
Open Pedagogy Project
Exploring UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
Honors Intercultural Communication Class
Spring 2021
Collaboration:
• My online asynchronous Honors Intercultural
Communication class (12 students)
• CLC colleague, Loribeth Larsen, and her
synchronous Global Studies class (started with 8
students)
• Jointly chose the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals (17 total SDGs) prior to
school year starting
• Her class projects were going to focus on goals 1-
8 with 1 “floater”
• My class was going to focus on goals 9-17 and
had 1 “floater”
• Worked separately, then pulled it all together in a
joint showcase at the end of the semester
My Class Project
• Approach: Backwards Design for timeline
and project development (ultimate goal and
timeframe set first then work backwards)
• Timeframe: 2/3 of the semester
(asynchronous)
• Workload: Extra, on top of everything else
the Standard IC Class was doing
• Process: “Honors Steps” (broken up and not
directly “graded”)
Timeframe Included:
• Week 1 Learning Style Assessment (all
students, every class)
• Intro to UN SDGs, Open Pedagogy,
and Honors Project
• Survey to rank SDG preferences 1-3 &
SDG assigning
• Student brainstorm of activities
• Review of my list of possibilities by
Learning Style type and samples by
SDG number
• Pre-project
proposal/revisions/contract
• 3 Progress Reports
• Peer2Peer Evaluation
• My Evaluation
• Final Revisions
• Reflection
• CC lessons and licensing
• Final student video summaries
• Kari compiling everything into
Merlot site
• Final Collective Showcase
GOAL: To design, develop, and publish open pedagogy projects based around the
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
• The purpose not only was to learn more about the SDGs and apply individual intercultural
communication skills, but also to generate tangible open teaching & learning resources.
• To this end, all of the class learning objects created from the HIC class were collected and
published under a Creative Commons attribution by a non-commercial license and made
available to the public through a public host site (Merlot collection using “content
builder”).
• Each student’s work is available through a separate webpage devoted to their project and
linked back to a class landing page.
• Students were encouraged to think creatively and to design projects that reflected their
learning strengths/styles, interests, skills, and academic goals.
• The end result? The projects were as wildly eclectic as the students.
Time to take a closer look!
• This project was designed for an Honors-level College course.
• Open pedagogy projects or assignments can be done at any level.
• There’s numerous resources and tips available on online. Take a peek!
• Remember, open pedagogy is a PRACTICE—the noun and the verb. 

  • 3. Quick Peek about me and CLC • Communication Instructor and eLearning Coordinator • One of the first to teach an online class at CLC • Teaching Full-Time since 2001 • Most of that, also completely online (asynchronously)
  • 4. Quick Peek about me and CLC • Comprehensive Community and Technical College • Multi-campus college (I’m on Brainerd campus) • Part of Minnesota State System • Serve about 5,500 students
  • 5. Quick Peek about Open Pedagogy • 1979 Claude Paquette referenced the term (time-stamping it as 10+ years) • 2013 David Wiley’s rewrote and “revisioned” the term in his blog to how we most often reference it today • Stemmed from Open Educational Resources (OER) work • Reflection of his 4 (now 5) R’s of Open Content Source: Scott Curtis, OER Lead, UMKC Libraries https://tinyurl.com/3c4h24nd
  • 6. David Wiley’s 5 R’s of Open Content • Reuse – the right to use the content in a wide range of ways (e.g., in a class, in a study group, on a website, in a video) • Revise – the right to adapt, adjust, modify, or alter the content itself (e.g., translate the content into another language) • Remix – the right to combine the original or revised content with other open content to create something new (e.g., incorporate the content into a mashup) • Redistribute – the right to share copies of the original content, your revisions, or your remixes with others (e.g., give a copy of the content to a friend) • Retain – the right to make, own, and control copies of the content (e.g., download, own, store, and manage) Revised order as permitted by https://creativecommons.org/about/cclicenses/

  • 10. Breaking it Down • OPEN • Defined by UNESCO as “educational materials that are in the public domain or that are introduced with an open license” • “Open” often mistaken for just meaning free • Actually “free with perpetual permission” • PEDAGOGY • Practice and/or method of teaching • How we teach, not what we teach • Sometimes called “Open Educational Practices” (OEP) • Love that “practice” is a noun and a verb. Cool, right? Sources: https://en.unesco.org/themes/building-knowledge-societies/oer and https://openedreader.org/chapter/open-content/
  • 11. Traditional versus Open Approach Traditional Approach • Teacher decides • Single learning style • Information stays within the classroom • Disposable Assignment (Linear & Finite) Open Pedagogy Approach • Student decides • Flexible learning styles • Information available outside of the classroom • Reusable (Dynamic & Infinite)
  • 13. We all can do that! No matter the grade or level 
  • 14. Peek at the Honor’s Open Pedagogy Project Exploring UN’s Sustainable Development Goals Honors Intercultural Communication Class Spring 2021
  • 15. Collaboration: • My online asynchronous Honors Intercultural Communication class (12 students) • CLC colleague, Loribeth Larsen, and her synchronous Global Studies class (started with 8 students) • Jointly chose the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (17 total SDGs) prior to school year starting • Her class projects were going to focus on goals 1- 8 with 1 “floater” • My class was going to focus on goals 9-17 and had 1 “floater” • Worked separately, then pulled it all together in a joint showcase at the end of the semester
  • 16. My Class Project • Approach: Backwards Design for timeline and project development (ultimate goal and timeframe set first then work backwards) • Timeframe: 2/3 of the semester (asynchronous) • Workload: Extra, on top of everything else the Standard IC Class was doing • Process: “Honors Steps” (broken up and not directly “graded”)
  • 17. Timeframe Included: • Week 1 Learning Style Assessment (all students, every class) • Intro to UN SDGs, Open Pedagogy, and Honors Project • Survey to rank SDG preferences 1-3 & SDG assigning • Student brainstorm of activities • Review of my list of possibilities by Learning Style type and samples by SDG number • Pre-project proposal/revisions/contract • 3 Progress Reports • Peer2Peer Evaluation • My Evaluation • Final Revisions • Reflection • CC lessons and licensing • Final student video summaries • Kari compiling everything into Merlot site • Final Collective Showcase
  • 18. GOAL: To design, develop, and publish open pedagogy projects based around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). • The purpose not only was to learn more about the SDGs and apply individual intercultural communication skills, but also to generate tangible open teaching & learning resources. • To this end, all of the class learning objects created from the HIC class were collected and published under a Creative Commons attribution by a non-commercial license and made available to the public through a public host site (Merlot collection using “content builder”). • Each student’s work is available through a separate webpage devoted to their project and linked back to a class landing page. • Students were encouraged to think creatively and to design projects that reflected their learning strengths/styles, interests, skills, and academic goals. • The end result? The projects were as wildly eclectic as the students.

  • 21. Time to take a closer look!
  • 22. • This project was designed for an Honors-level College course. • Open pedagogy projects or assignments can be done at any level. • There’s numerous resources and tips available on online. Take a peek! • Remember, open pedagogy is a PRACTICE—the noun and the verb. 
