A Look at the Marburg Fever Outbreaks This week we will examine: Marburg Fever in Africa. MARBURG VIRUS The largest and deadliest outbreak of Marburg hemorrhagic fever on record occurred in 2005. The Ministry of Health (MOH) in Angola reported a total of 374 cases, including 329 deaths reported countrywide. The Angolan Government, WHO and other partners, established a surveillance system for identification of suspected cases and follow up of their contacts. Mobile teams were sent to the field to investigate rumors, obtain clinical specimens for laboratory tests, hospitalize suspected patients and monitor their contacts B. For the Marburg fever case, you will discuss the major obstacles and difficulties that public health officials and health care workers had in controlling the outbreak of Marburg fever and the solutions they found to these difficulties. Malaria Control Strategies among Rural Dwellers in a Typical Nigerian Setting
Malaria is a major public health problem in sub-Saharan African, including Nigeria, causing 63% of total outpatient attendance in health facilities, 30% under-five mortality, and 11% of maternal mortality. Malaria control practices remain a major strategy in the combat of this menace. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the malaria control strategies utilized among rural dwellers in the Ezza North local government area (LGA) of Ebonyi state.
Epidemiology and Diagnosis of Mucormycosis
Mucormycosis is an angioinvasive fungal infection due to fungi of the order Mucorales.
Depending on the clinical presentation it is classified as rhinocerebral, pulmonary, cutaneous, gastrointestinal, disseminated or other, which includes uncommon rare forms, such as endocarditis, osteomyelitis, peritonitis, renal, etc.
The disease was first described in 1876 when Fürbinger described in Germany a patient who died of cancer and in whom the right lung showed a hemorrhagic infarct with fungal hyphae and a few sporangia.
In 1885, Arnold Paltauf published the first case of disseminated mucormycosis, which he named “Mycosis mucorina”.
His drawings of the etiologic agent showed the presence of sporangiophores and rhizoid-like structures, and this led to the conclusion that the infection was most probably caused by Lichtheimia corymbifera.
Over time, more cases were diagnosed, and the incidence of the disease has increased.
Currently, Mucorales fungi are the next most common mold pathogens after Aspergillus, leading to invasive fungal disease in patients with malignancies or transplantation.
The incidence of mucormycosis has also increased significantly inpatients with diabetes, which is the commonest underlying risk factor globally.
Τhe epidemiology of mucormycosis is evolving as new immunomodulating agents are used in the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases, and as the modern diagnostic tools lead to the identification of previously uncommon genera/species such as the Apophysomyces or Saksenaea complex.
Mumps
Mumps virus is a common infectious agent of humans, causing parotitis, meningitis, encephalitis, and orchitis. Like other paramyxoviruses in the genus Rubulavirus, mumps virus catalyzes the proteasomal degradation of cellular STAT1 protein, a means for escaping antiviral responses initiated by alpha/beta and gamma interferons. We demonstrate that mumps virus also eliminates cellular STAT3, a protein that mediates transcriptional responses to cytokines, growth factors, nonreceptor tyrosine kinases, and a variety of oncogenic stimuli. STAT1 and STAT3 are independently targeted by a single mumps virus protein, called V, that assembles STAT-directed ubiquitylation complexes from cellular components, including STAT1, STAT2, STAT3, DDB1, and Cullin4A. Consequently, mumps virus V protein prevents responses to interleukin-6 and v-Src signals and can induce apoptosis in STAT3-dependent multiple myeloma cells and transformed murine fibroblasts. These findings demonstrate a unique cytokine and oncogene evasion property of mumps virus that provides a molecular basis for its observed oncolytic properties. more info on slides

Summary
International Paper (IP), the world’s largest forest products
company, owns the Androscoggin Mill, a large pulp and paper
mill in Jay, Maine, in the nor theastern United States. This case
study describes the transformation of the Androscoggin Mill
from an object of public opprobrium and con�ict to a show-
case for environmental management. In the late 1980s, an 18-
month strike had embittered workers and townspeople and
left the mill’s reputation in tatters. In response to mill environ-
mental violations, some of which were considered crimes by
state regulators, the town of Jay passed its own environmental
ordinance to control mill emissions. Early in the 1990s, new
management, including two former corporate-level employ-
ees, sought to change the mill’s business approach and turn
the Androscoggin Mill into IP’s best environmental performer.
The initial emphasis on establishing and maintaining compli-
ance was expanded to include aggressive pollution prevention
effor ts that led to cooperative projects with the Maine De-
par tment of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, and stakeholder groups. The mill’s ap-
proach in the 1990s evolved further to essentially follow prin-
ciples of industrial ecology. New approaches focused on “clos-
ing the loop” by �nding bene�cial uses for previously land�lled
wastes, replacements for most hazardous chemicals, and re-
ductions in solid and hazardous waste generation. The mill also
pursued the establishment of symbiotic relationships with a
facility that began using a mill by-product on-site and an on-
site natural gas burning facility that provided par t of the mill’s
steam demand. IP also established a public advisory committee
in 1992 to advise management on operational and “big-
picture” issues, which later included the application of sustain-
ability criteria to the mill. IP has since formed community ad-
visory committees at each of their integrated pulp and paper
mills.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
