Biography Ernest Miller Hemingway was born July 21, 1899 in a suburb of Chicago His domineering religious mother wanted him to pursue music, but he enjoyed his fathers outdoor hobbies better This passion for the outdoors and nature would stick with him for the rest of his life and most of his writing
Biography II In high school, he performed well both academically and athletically He first starting writing and editing for his school newspaper and yearbook After high school he did not want to go to college, and really started his writing career at  The Kansas City Star The short sentences and paragraphs reporters use is the style he continued to use throughout his writing
Biography III In 1918 he tried to join the US Army in World War 1, but could not because of bad vision. Instead he joined the Red Cross Ambulance Corps His encounters with death and war were the basis for many of his short stories and novels  In July of that year he was severly wounded while delivers supplies, which ended his driving career
Biography V After being hit by a trench mortar shell, he got treatment in a Milan hospital  His boredom started his heavy drinking He met a nurse at the hospital, whom he fell in love with but the relationship did not last His war life and love life is clearly shown in this novel of  A Farewell to Arms
Final Biography Receiving medical treatment in Ketchum, Idaho in 1961, he attempted a failed suicide, and the committed suicide by a gunshot later that year in July It is speculated that he suffered from alcoholism, possibly manic depression, and a disease called haemochromatosis The blood has a higher iron concentration, which causes damage to the pancreas and depression/instability in the cerebrum History

Character Summary Fredrick Henry-  main character, American solider fighting with the Italians, closely based on Ernest’s war experience, heavy drinker, rarely shows any emotion, doesn’t open up to many people, yet seems to have fallen in love Rinaldi-  a close friend of Fred’s at the base, originally wanted Catherine, is always entertaining, also a drinker, a surgeon who loves what he does and does it a lot, but towards the end of the book, it seemed to get old to him
Character Summary Catherine Barkley-  a nurse at Fred’s Base, there because she followed her first fiancee solider who past in the war, in secure at first, loves very deeply- especially Fred, worships him almost to much The Priest-  against the war, lets others pick on him and his beliefs, a moral basis character for Fred, we rarely see- but when we do see him- he is giving advise and trying to help Fred
Character Summary Miss Fergeson-  always with Catherine, very “iffy” about Fred, more serious about their relationship, very critical Miss Gage-  one of the first nurses to help Fred, often drinks with him, supplies drinks to him, or hides his drinking Miss Van Campen-  nurse in charge, strongly dislikes Fred, easily offended and frustrated
