Recently we announced the availability of Mesos as a new type of environment in Rancher. In our June online meetup, we provided an introduction to Mesos, and demonstrated how to easily deploy Mesos environments on any infrastructure in minutes. We also discussed some of the workloads that are well suited for Mesos, and demonstrate how to easily deploy Mesos frameworks such as Marathon and Chronos.

Tips, Tricks and Tools for Running Containers Like a Pro - Rancher Labs April...
In our April Rancher Online meetup, Darren Shepherd and Shannon Williams walked through a handful of best practices for running your apps successfully using Docker and Rancher. We have posted a recording and the slides below. During the video, we discuss how to leverage web hooks to scale up and redeploy environments using Cowbell, how to manage secrets with Vault, how to deploy a dashboard for capacity management with Prometheus, and how to clean up orphaned images and volumes with Janitor.
We were also joined by Rancher Dir. of DevOps Bill Maxwell who introduces a new Rancher integration with Vault.
Finally, Brandon Papworth shared how he and the team at app design studio Dom & Tom, migrated their apps to Docker and Rancher.

ThreatMapper is currently focused on mapping the attack surface, but future versions will incorporate additional features like gathering attack intelligence and providing indicators of compromise. The combination results in a highly restricted environment that forces the team back to first principles, finding what can actually work. How Elixir helped us scale our Video User Profile Service for the Olympics
The document discusses how a video user profile service originally built in Ruby on Rails was scaled using Elixir. It initially increased resources and used containers, improving performance by 32% and 12% respectively. It was found one endpoint handled 80% of traffic. Rewriting this in Elixir improved performance by 95% and reduced containers by 35%. The results showed Elixir was able to significantly improve scalability and metrics for the growing user profile API.

Snap CI enables software teams to do Continuous Delivery (CD). When practicing CD, the goal is to automate the deployment process and build software in such a way that it can be deployed to production any time. As a deployment tool, Snap CI cannot have downtime. If it did, our users would not be able to deploy their own software. We had to change Snap CI’s architecture to ensure zero-downtime and we chose to do blue-green deployments to achieve it. In this approach, we had to maintain two instances of our system: one active instance, and one inactive instance. Based on our experiences, we will share some tricks of the trade from the numerous challenges we faced such as: making the application aware of whether it was active or inactive, handling data migrations, and babysitting long-running jobs.

In order to better understand the current state of each SDK we will go through the exact steps for quick prototyping of new products with low-cost single board computers like Raspberry Pi and Orange Pi Zero.

Kustomize is a Kubernetes native configuration management tool that allows customizing application configurations without templating. Adopting this modern approach to software development can be transformative—enabling collaboration and fostering the creation of high quality code. But understanding the principles, and potential challenges, is critical to success.
Many companies use the word “innersource” to describe how their engineering teams work together on code. Innersource is a development methodology where engineers build proprietary software using best practices from large-scale open source projects, like Kubernetes or Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code.
Large-scale open source projects require coordination and teamwork across thousands of contributors. The most successful ones are driven by a vision for their future, in addition to day-to-day user needs: speed, reliability, and functionality. The scale at which these operate can teach us a few lessons—and help your business build better software, faster using innersource.
An OpenShift Migration: From 3.9 to 4.5
