This presentation discusses containers and their advantages over virtual machines. Abstract: Containers, applications, functions: When deploying workloads to the cloud, developers have various options. With this talk, we intend to clarify the different possibilities, with closer focus on Cloud Foundry, Kubernetes, Project Eirini, and Knative.
We'll compare and contrast the latest experiences of those platforms in order to extract a meaningful comparison of their features from a developer perspective, providing answers to the following questions:
- Which type of workloads are suitable for which platform?

Why does any "code lab workshop" or live demo are always such a challenge?
A wise sysadmin once told me: “Get your hand dirty with the production to learn”.
So I want to tell you a story of getting hand dirties, by creating a code lab environment considered as production.
This story will show that we can build a reproducible environment for code-labs workshops, by using the Docker “tools”: the Engine, Swarm Mode, Docker-Compose, Moby, LinuxKit.
Following the spirit of “Play With Docker”, but generalized at any service collection, this Codelab toolkit has been used on code-labs workshops of 120+ people.
That path was not a free lunch, but the lessons learned will give you an idea on how a training environment can be efficiently done with Compose and Swarm Mode, by treating it as a “production” platform, tackling the plumbing “youth” limitations for the better of your use case.
As a trainer, I never learned so much than building something to teach people someone else: this the story I want to tell you, the tale of using Docker as a tool of MASSIVE KNOWLEDGE SHARING, which is the root of growing our industry together.

Pulumi IAC on GCP allows defining infrastructure as code using a DSL and JSON in a way that transitions infrastructure from dev to ops. It provides a centralized resource for container image discovery, distribution, and change management. Typical development involves testing changes, review by DevOps engineers, collecting and transforming data to build and deploy models. Infrastructure as code manages infrastructure through code instead of manually, creating reusable abstractions that can be shared and previewed before deployment through flexible CLIs integrated with CI/CD workflows while auditing all changes and implementing policies and controls for complex managed environments. Serverless architectures with Fn Project
Serverless is currently the talk of the town and is enjoying increasing popularity. What does serverless actually mean, what are its characteristics and when do you prefer the use of serverless technologies to a container-based solution?
With the Fn project, Oracle now has a serverless open source platform that can run in the cloud, in its own data center or on a developer's local computer. This distinguishes the solution from other serverless platforms on the market. The Fn project is developed by the same team that previously implemented IronFunctions. The framework is based on Docker and currently does not require a managed runtime environment. But is it still serverless?
The session explains basic serverless concepts, benefits and deployment scenarios of the platform-independent Fn Serverless framework.

Docker 101 - all about Docker containers
Early adopters report "easier replication, faster deployment and lower configuration and operating costs" of applications that involve Docker containers - an open platform that allows developers and sysadmins to build, ship and execute distributed applications.
Not surprisingly then, a groundswell of organizations are interested in evaluating Docker containers in proof-of-concept initiatives and/or pilot projects. The transition to production use, however, introduces additional requirements as Docker containers need to be incorporated into existing IT infrastructures and (ultimately) integrated into application workflows.

Abstract:
Continuous delivery is everywhere. Well, not quite! Many teams still fail to continuously deliver well tested and stable product increments to production, especially when it comes to its non-functional attributes. Usually with the same old excuse: these high-level tests are too laborious and expensive to implement. But the opposite could be the case! This slides will show how easy it is to implement continuous performance, security and acceptance tests based for microservices on Kubernetes using well-known open source tools.

Abstract: Wenn es darum geht, Kubernetes auf Hardware mit eingeschränkten Ressourcen wie einer lokalen Entwickler-Workstation oder Edge- und IoT-Geräten zu betreiben, ist eine volle Kubernetes-Distribution nicht die ideale Wahl. Viel besser dafür geeignet ist stattdessen eine neue Generation von leichten und dennoch zertifizierten K8s-Distributionen.
In diesem Vortrag werden wir uns zwei beliebte Optionen genauer ansehen: MicroK8s und K3s.
Nach einem kurzen Überblick der jeweiligen Funktionen unterziehen wir beide Kandidaten einem Live-Praxistest auf realer Hardware. Dieser Vortrag ist Hands-on und unterhaltsam zugleich, und zeigt, dass man als Entwickler keinen Doktortitel in K8s Clusterology benötigt.

Why does any "code lab workshop" or live demo are always such a challenge?
A wise sysadmin once told me: “Get your hand dirty with the production to learn”.
So I want to tell you a story of getting hand dirties, by creating a code lab environment considered as production.
This story will show that we can build a reproducible environment for code-labs workshops, by using the Docker “tools”: the Engine, Swarm Mode, Docker-Compose, Moby, LinuxKit.
Following the spirit of “Play With Docker”, but generalized at any service collection, this Codelab toolkit has been used on code-labs workshops of 120+ people.
That path was not a free lunch, but the lessons learned will give you an idea on how a training environment can be efficiently done with Compose and Swarm Mode, by treating it as a “production” platform, tackling the plumbing “youth” limitations for the better of your use case.
As a trainer, I never learned so much than building something to teach people someone else: this the story I want to tell you, the tale of using Docker as a tool of MASSIVE KNOWLEDGE SHARING, which is the root of growing our industry together.

Serverless architectures with Fn Project
Serverless is currently the talk of the town and is enjoying increasing popularity. What does serverless actually mean, what are its characteristics and when do you prefer the use of serverless technologies to a container-based solution?
With the Fn project, Oracle now has a serverless open source platform that can run in the cloud, in its own data center or on a developer's local computer. This distinguishes the solution from other serverless platforms on the market. The Fn project is developed by the same team that previously implemented IronFunctions. The framework is based on Docker and currently does not require a managed runtime environment. But is it still serverless?
The session explains basic serverless concepts, benefits and deployment scenarios of the platform-independent Fn Serverless framework.
