India is highly dependent on imports for its oil consumption, importing 68% of the oil it needs. It is projected to become the fourth largest oil importer in the world by 2025. Most of India's crude oil imports come from Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran. India also needs to increase its domestic ethanol production substantially to fulfill its goal of blending 10% ethanol into gasoline, which would require an additional 30 million tons of sugarcane annually. The government of India still needs to more strongly support ethanol blending through policies and see ethanol as more than just a fuel.
