The architecture of conventional phone systems dates back to a time when going to work meant going to an office. But today’s mobile and global workers require more agility and capabilities than these systems can support. Today’s workers, who now need to be flexible to work from wherever they happen to be, require more agility and capabilities than these systems can support. Aging phone systems typically do not support remote workforces, who can be productive from any location.
This document explains the 9 key benefits that is driving so many companies to move their phone system to the cloud.

Unified communications (UC) integrates communication functions into business processes. It can be purchased through telecom, desktop, or application providers. UC includes tools like presence, instant messaging, conferencing, mobility features, and integrating communications into business processes. While vendors often oversimplify UC, it is best viewed as a continuum from infrastructure integration to application integration. UC aims to optimize processes by speeding communication and collaboration.

Mobile adoption is growing rapidly, with over 60% annual growth in mobile devices compared to 15% for PCs. This brings opportunities for cloud adoption as enterprises develop mobile apps and build private mobile clouds initially. Enterprise mobility allows businesses to improve productivity, customer interactions, and transactions anywhere at any time. However, challenges include securing and managing devices, integrating personal and corporate data, and addressing platform fragmentation with native vs. HTML5 apps. This creates implications for vendors to focus on enabling governance and application delivery across diverse mobile environments and form factors.
This document discusses how tablets are becoming essential tools for deskless workers. Tablets provide a versatile form factor that allows workers to be productive from any position and access important customer and device information remotely. They bridge humans and IoT data by enabling workers to both access and input data easily. Tablets send a signal that businesses are adapting to new technologies, important for attracting younger workers. When paired with security and management tools, tablets improve service experiences and outcomes while increasing job satisfaction and efficiency for mobile workforces.
CIO | 3 STEPS to Maximizing ROI for Microsoft Lync Enterprise VoiceChristiaan Stavorinus
ENTERPRISES ARE STANDING AT A CROSSROADS AND COMMUNICATION IS KEY TO SUCCESS.
In today’s highly competitive, global marketplace. Executives need to make decisions quickly, but information and employees are spread out in many different locations. To operate efficiently, businesses need fast, simple ways to exchange data.
As a result, many enterprises stand at an important crossroad. They have invested large sums in legacy Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) network voice infrastructures that do not easily support modern Unified Communications (UC) solutions, such as the increasingly popular Microsoft Lync.
“About 70% of businesses are now using Lync in some fashion,” states Irwin Lazar, Vice President and Service Director for The Nemertes Research Group, Inc. “Most of these companies use it for instant messaging, web conferencing, and voice/video chat. A small but growing percentage are using it to replace or augment their PBXs.”
In addition to delivering new communication options, Unified Commu- nications delivers other benefits. By leaving behind their legacy PBX and moving ahead to a new Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) network infrastructure, businesses reduce their capital expenditure (CapEx) and lower their ongoing maintenance requirements, which can decrease their operating expenditure (OpEx) by as much as 50%.
The transition from the old to the new works with the right network infrastructure. Enterprises need one that is rock solid. “Today, businesses simply cannot tolerate downtime,” says James Rodd, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Modality Systems, Unified Communications specialists. Businesses must also have a way to integrate their traditional systems with new, modern functions. Finally, they need a solution that offers robust security, so corporate data
is protected as it travels from location to location. To deliver such functionality, enterprises need a Session Border Controller (SBC) that works in conjunction with Lync to enable the delivery of sophisticated voice, data, and video services to enterprise users.
Unified Communications & Collaboration: Connecting people and informationComputacenter UK LTD
Unified Communications and Collaboration (UCC) aims to connect people and information across disparate locations to improve productivity. UCC brings together technologies like IP telephony, video conferencing, instant messaging and collaboration tools on a single platform. Implementing UCC requires establishing an IP-based communications infrastructure and adopting visual collaboration tools to replace travel with virtual meetings and training sessions. Computacenter can help organizations implement and support UCC solutions to realize benefits like reduced costs, improved flexibility and collaboration, and faster decision making.
9 Ways Your Aging Phone System Is Putting Business Success On HoldInteractiveNEC
Whether it’s a question about a product or service, a new order, a support issue, or simply trying to pay a bill, customers still want to pick up a phone and talk to someone at your company. In other words, despite all the advances in technology, people still need a human connection—and a phone call provides just that.
Modern cloud communications provide businesses with scalable and affordable phone systems that support remote work and BYOD trends. Some key benefits of cloud communications include:
1) Improved communications that enable remote work and BYOD while maintaining excellent customer service through features like virtual auto attendants.
2) Scalable services that grow with the business and allow adding or reducing features on demand without long-term commitments or hardware costs.
3) Lower overall costs of up to 40% compared to traditional phone systems which require expensive hardware and line costs.

PingPal infodeck: How to survive BYOD and mobile networksHyker Security
Here comes BYOD, Bring Your Own Device.
A lot of the traffic, internal corporate and with customers and market, will be outside firewalls to mobile devices owned by the employees, on public networks. A lot of sensitive corporate data must be stored locally in the device to ensure that for instance sales people has updated and correct CRM data when visiting customers.
Employees will communicate internally on consumer tools like WhatsApp. This is not the safest environment, rather more or less a ticking bomb. Gartner expects that by 2017, “40% of enterprise contact information will have leaked on to Facebook via employees’ increased use of mobile device collaboration applications.”
To unlock the full potential of enterprise mobility, IT needs to allow people the freedom to seamlessly access all their apps and data from any device, company owned or private.
It is now time to recover lost grounds and include secure mobility in your IT strategy.
The consumerization of IT is under way. Workers want tablet access to business applications, often from personal devices. Learn why VPNs are not ideal for mobile connectivity and why remote desktop is a more secure, less expensive approach to tablet access that is easier to deploy, manage and use.

Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

Chris Jones, Director of Product Management at BrainChip , presents the “Temporal Event Neural Networks: A More Efficient Alternative to the Transformer” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
The expansion of AI services necessitates enhanced computational capabilities on edge devices. Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
Integration with BrainChip’s Akida neuromorphic hardware IP further enhances TENNs’ capabilities, enabling the realization of highly capable, portable and passively cooled edge devices. This presentation delves into the technical innovations underlying TENNs, presents real-world benchmarks, and elucidates how this cutting-edge approach is positioned to revolutionize edge AI across diverse applications.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

9 Reasons Why Now is the Time to Replace Your Aging Phone System
1. 9 Reasons Why Now is the Time to Replace
Your Aging Phone System with UNIVERGE BLUE
2. 9 REASONS WHY NOW IS THE TIME TO REPLACE YOUR AGING PHONE SYSTEM WITH UNIVERGE BLUE2
Whether it’s a question about a product or service, a new order, a support issue, or
simply trying to pay a bill, customers still need a human connection when they’re looking
for help – and the right cloud communications platform – that includes calling, video
conferencing, chat, and secure file sharing provides just that.
The architecture of conventional phone systems dates back to a time when
going to work meant going to an office. But today’s mobile and global workers
require more agility and capabilities than these systems can support.
The trouble is the architecture of conventional phone systems dates back to
a time when going to work meant going to an office. Many were even designed when
smartphones were considered nothing but science fiction. Today’s workers, who now
need to be flexible to work from wherever they happen to be, require more agility and
capabilities than these systems can support. Aging phone systems typically do not
support remote workforces, who can be productive from any location. Most aging phone
systems do not even provide direct access to company voicemail from a mobile device,
which could cause delays in responding to customers. And you can’t afford to miss sales
or lose customers because they can’t communicate with your employees when and
how they like.
A modern cloud communications platform not only provides highly reliable connectivity
and call quality but is also easy to deploy and simple to maintain. Plus, the cloud delivers
the agility and advanced features your business needs to keep pace with impatient
consumers and mobile workers.
Let’s take a bit of a deeper look at nine key benefits that explain why companies like yours
have already made the move to the cloud.

3. 9 REASONS WHY NOW IS THE TIME TO REPLACE YOUR AGING PHONE SYSTEM WITH UNIVERGE BLUE 3
You enjoy one flat-rate for all your calls, chats, and video conferences anywhere in North
America. For one predictable monthly charge you also get a range of services like internet
fax and conference calling – without the complexity of multiple bills. Contrast that with
traditional on-premises systems where even when the hardware is paid for, you still incur
ongoing costs for things like software upgrades, maintenance, and support. You may also
need expensive expansion cards to add new users or costly private business exchange lines
for connectivity between multiple locations.
Unlike on-premises systems that require a major investment of time and money to add
advanced features like video conferencing, these services, that employees now rely on readily,
come pre-integrated with a cloud communications platform. Also, rather than making a major
investment in hardware, pay-as-you-go subscription pricing means low risk to migrate to the
benefits of the cloud.

4. 9 REASONS WHY NOW IS THE TIME TO REPLACE YOUR AGING PHONE SYSTEM WITH UNIVERGE BLUE 4
Your phone system is often the first point of contact with your customer, so it should be a good
experience. A new breed of customer – tech-savvy, online, and mobile – demands the same
of your company. They expect to reach someone the first time they call. Plus, these impatient
customers expect that person to have all the information they need at their fingertips - at least
as fast as they could get it themselves on the web. According to Harris Interactive, 89% of
consumers begin doing business with a competitor following a poor customer experience.
Especially because the COVID-19 virus prompted so many to shelter in place, old habits gave
way to new ways of working remotely and conducting business without in-person contact.
Whether connecting through a call, video, chat, or email, customers demand choice and
convenience. A study by the respected research firm Gartner also found that when it comes to
making a purchase, 64% of people find customer experience more important than price. This
means businesses must quickly put customers in touch with exactly who they need.
This can create problems for businesses still using old-school phone systems. When a
traditional on-premises PBX phone system can’t integrate with your teams’ mobile devices
or support your customers preferred means for engaging, you leave yourself open to a poor
customer experience, especially if your company’s representatives aren’t sitting at their desks
in the office at the moment the customer calls. You worked hard to get that customer on the
phone, so why take the risk of missing the call?
A modern cloud communications platform gives your employees tools like instant access to
company voicemail and business SMS to stay in touch with customers anytime, anywhere,
and from virtually any mobile device.

Plus, having a mobile and desktop computer application, along with all of your data being
backed up in the cloud, means your business continues even in the case of a fire, power

your employees from working in your offices they can simply use the mobile app or

7. 9 REASONS WHY NOW IS THE TIME TO REPLACE YOUR AGING PHONE SYSTEM WITH UNIVERGE BLUE 7
Pre-pandemic, workers were already expecting to have the tools to work from anywhere,
optimize their commute time, and make calls outside of business hours. This is not a surprise
as more than one-in-three American labor force participants 35% Millennials – the largest
generation in the U.S. labor force – grew up in this mobile-first world. When COVID-19
surprised so many businesses with social distancing regulations that required employees
to work remotely, business leaders were forced to rethink their workforce location models.
Geographic flexibility for mobile workers, speed and agility shifted from competitive advantage
to table stakes. A cloud communications platform means employees can talk to customers,
and to each other, anytime, from anywhere, and on virtually any mobile device.
A good cloud communications service provides apps for mobile devices and desktops
to support your workers anywhere they roam. This mobility allows employees to access
conference calls, video conferences, chats, faxing, web meetings, and file sharing from
a mobile device. It also provides a big advantage in a world where people increasingly use
a smartphone even when they get back to their office desks.
Better still, your mobile workers will have the same capabilities of a full-featured phone system
as employees in the office. They can access the company directory, check voicemail, and
transfer calls from a smartphone. Meanwhile, your customers can reach your employees from
a single company number. When employees call out from a mobile device, customers and
partners see your company number – not a personal cell number. So, you strengthen your
brand, and when an employee leaves the company your customers don’t go with them.
The cloud can also deliver advanced features like video conferencing, web meetings, and file
sharing to keep your employees seamlessly connected – and usually for less than you’re paying
for that old phone sitting in front of you.

Adding, moving, or changing lines with a conventional phone system might take a technician

expand into a new market.
Rather than requesting a service call or waiting for the phone company to provision lines,
you can simply send phones to new offices or remote workers. Your employees easily plug
the phones into an internet connection, and they’re ready to go. Your new office also has
a complete business phone service that includes features like the ability to transfer calls to
your home office or other remote locations. Wherever your employees work, your cloud
communications platform can route calls to them seamlessly and without interruption.

Technology is progressing so quickly, it’s hard for even the most advanced IT professionals
to keep up with enhancements and patches to hardware-based systems. A top-tier service
provider will automatically upgrade your calling and other communications features in the
cloud. You won’t have to worry about upgrades or added fees; your employees always have
access to the latest features.
A cloud communications platform eliminates the need to pay for collaboration services such
as video conferencing, chat, secure file storage, internet fax, backup, and other stand-alone
services from different suppliers. This not only reduces procurement and billing complexity
but also dramatically improves employee productivity. For example, with an integrated cloud
communications platform, employees collaborating in a group chat can instantly elevate the
session to a videoconference or web meeting.
