The Zhou Dynasty in China believed in the Mandate of Heaven, which held that heaven gave the right to rule provided the ruler was moral, ethical, and good, and subjects were loyal and obedient in return. However, a ruler could lose the mandate through weak, corrupt, or cruel leadership; natural disasters seen as signs from heaven; losing the support and loyalty of the people by failing to meet their needs and facing rebellion; or losing a war.
