Analysis of the short film 72kg

7- 72kg

2.  72kg is a 4 minute social realism short film set in Dubai.
The entire film was filmed on the Samsung Galaxy Note
5 mobile phone and placed 2nd in a phone-based film
competition created by Samsung. During the film we see
a wealthy man help a homeless man to earn money by
giving him a set of scales. So when people give the
homeless money they are paying to get weighed. This
film is based on the saying "Give a man a fish and feed
him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a
lifetime". The film can be seen as social realistic as it
tackles the real world issue of homelessness.
Intro

3.  The film starts with a shot with a homeless man
sitting on the side of the road. We see a man
walk past and put money in the tin the homeless
man has in front of him. Next we see a wealthy
man walk up to the homeless man but he keeps
walking without giving him any money. We can
tell that this man is wealthy as he is wearing a
suit and therefore stands out as no one else on
the street is wearing smart clothes. This therefore
highlights the wealth of the man and makes the
audience question why he didn't give the
homeless man any money.

4.  Next we see the wealthy man enter his house
and begin to search through his drawers and
boxes on top of a cupboard. Eventually we see
the man lift down a box and place it down. The
film then cuts to a shot of the wealthy man
carrying the box down the street the homeless
man is sitting on.
 We then see the wealthy man kneel down next
to the homeless man with the box. The wealthy
man then takes a set of scales out of the box
and places it next to the homeless man.

5.  The wealthy man then stands on the scales and
weighs himself. He then gives the homeless
some money and then leaves. Next we see
another man walk up to homeless man and he
weighs himself on the scales and gives the man
some money. This scene is very effective as it
shows the message of the film that it is better to
give someone a way to earn money instead of
giving of them money. This is due to scales
which allow the homeless man to provide a
service to people who then pay the homeless
man.

6.  Overall, I believe that this is a effective social
realism short film that tackles the issue of
homelessness well and shows that it is better to
help someone achieve something instead of just
giving them something. Furthermore the
characters in this film don't say a single word
and this further highlights the effectiveness of
the film as it is still able to deliver a message
without having the characters talk.
