Short Film Analysis

2. The shot used on the left is an
effective use of camera work. It
shows the homeless man showing no
emotion on his face. It also shows a
more well of and clean cut man
showing no emotion or empathy
towards the homeless man. This show
also allows the viewer to see the
comparison between homeless
people and more wealthy people.
The shot on the right is also a good
sue of camera work. It shows a close
up of a man walking bare foot with
dirty feet. This is the typical image of a
homeless man therefore it instantly
gives the viewer an insight into what
the film might be about.
The shot uses a tracking shot to also
follow the footprints of this homeless
man which perhaps shows that is in
search of something.
Camerawork
3. The use of camera angles is also important.
In the scene in which the man and woman
are arguing, over the shoulder shots are
used. This is continuously used
throughout the scene. Over the shoulder
shots are commonly used in many shots in
general which involve conversation
between two people therefore this makes
the audience more familiar with the style
of camera work.
Another shot used is the close up shot.
There is a close up shot of the homeless
mans face. This represents the emotion
on his face and also signifies that he is
homeless due to his image. It also shows
that he is perhaps fed up of his lifestyle
due to the lack of emotion on his face.
4. Locatio
n
The location used in this short film is a suburban area in America. The area
gives of the vibe that it is a rough area and is portrayed as dusty. The
location gives of the impression that it is more suited to the homeless
man rather than the wealthier well dressed man.
5. Mise-en-scene
Costume
The costume of the man in the
screen shot on left is a smart suit
and sunglasses. It shows he is
well dressed and gives of the
impression that he is wealthy.
The screen shot on the right
shows the homeless man. His
clothing is dirty, ripped and old.
He is also not wearing shoes
which is the way in which a
homeless man is typically
described as.
6. Props
Clothing are the key props used in the
short film. They are significant as they
represent the difference in wealth. The
homeless man puts on the other mans
clothing which presents the idea that
clothing can completely change an
individuals appearance and the way in
which they come across.
The convertible car also represents
the idea of class and wealth as it is an
expensive car being driven by the
well dressed man.
7. Conventions
The key convention of a short film used is the idea of limiting the
amount of characters. This short film only has three characters. Short
films usually have minimum characters due to the idea of not being
able to go into detail on each characters background.
8. The shoes hanging on the wiring in the street is a symbolic part of this
short film. This is usually the case to see whether the audience
understand the story and message behind the plot. The use of the shoes
supports the concept of one mans loss is another mans gain. Symbolism
is very common in short films.
