The Kyoto Protocol's clean development mechanism (CDM) has reached the milestone of 7,000 registered projects that incentivize greenhouse gas emission reduction projects in developing countries. The 7,000th project involves capturing and destroying biogas from two livestock farms in the Philippines to reduce annual emissions by 48,000 tons while also providing local economic and health benefits. However, CDM faces challenges from low prices of certified emission reductions (CERs) that have dropped 90% in the past year. Over the past 10 years, CDM has driven over $215 billion in low-carbon investment and added over 110,000 megawatts of renewable energy across 88 developing countries.
