Habit 4 Think Win-Win
Five Dimensions of Win-Win
Five Dimensions of Win-Win
Habit
i. Integrity
• Is not something you show others. It is how you behave
behind their back.
• Wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it,
Right is right, even if no one is doing it.
ii. Maturity
• is when a person hurts you and you try to understand their
situation rather than hurting them back.
• is the ability to disagree with someone while still remaining
respectful.
iii. Abundance Mentality
• “There is plenty for all to win”– This mindset eliminates the
need to compete against each other and to promote sharing.
1. Character
Habit 4 Think Win-Win
2. Relationship
Trust forms the basis of a partnership. It forms the
platform for mutual learning, open communication and
team creativity.
Understanding each other’s perspective in depth to
work synergistically to create the win-win solution.
Open communication: allows doubts and negative
feelings to be resolved in a mutually beneficial way.
Five Dimensions of Win-Win
Habit 4 Think Win-Win
3. Agreements
Results oriented approach defines what is to be done
strategically.
Guidelines specify the parameters (principles, policies, rules,
values, etc) to accomplish the goal.
Resource Management – Managing the means to reach your
goals.
Accountability – Being responsible for the task you are
assigned.
Consequences – Being prepared: Planning for Success and
Failures; In times of failure, people may lose their senses on how
to react correctly, sometimes resulting in negative chain reactions.
Five Dimensions of Win-Win
Habit 4 Think Win-Win
4. Systems – A Set of Process
An ongoing activity needs some sort of system/structure
to support it. When a system is in place, the human
aspect is being reduced thus streamlining processes
automatically.
Win-Win cannot be achieved in an environment of
competition and contest. However we can create an
environment where people work together to compete
against external performance standards.
Five Dimensions of Win-Win
Habit 4 Think Win-Win
5.Processes
• Only win/win process will achieve a win/win results.
• You harvest what you sow – A wrong method will not
lead you to the desired result or goal even though you
get “closer” to it.
Five Dimensions of Win-Win
Habit 5: Seek First to
Understand, then to be
understood

COMMUNICATION
Effectiveness Of Communication
LISTENING
Listening requires entering actively and imaginatively into the other fellows situation and
trying to understand a frame of reference different from your own.
LISTENING and HEARING
Listening is a conscious/psychological act
Hearing is a physiological act

Empathetic Listening
 is paying attention to another person with empathy (emotional identification, compassion,
feeling, insight).
 Empathic listening is a way of listening and responding to another person that improves
mutual understanding and trust.
Builds trust and respect.
Enables the disputants to release their emotions.
Reduces tensions.
Encourages the surfacing of information.
Creates a safe environment that is conducive to collaborative problem solving.
THE BENEFITS OF EMPATHIC LISTENING
Then seek to be understood
Three words are effective in making effective presentation:
Ethos: This has to do with the person’s credibility and accountability
Pathos: This is a means of persuasion that appeals to the empathic side or emotions of the
audience.
Logos: It is a means of persuasion by demonstration of logical proof real or apparent.
Seek to Be Understood
• Seeking First to Understand is only half of habit 5.
• Seeking to Be Understood is way more challenging since it require
courage.
• If you can understand other, then other will surely understand you
too.
What is Synergy ?
Synergy means to work
together as a team to
achieve more and make
a bad situation better.
“Alone we can do so little; together
we can do so much.”
–Helen Keller
Synergy means :
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts
1 + 1 = 3
Two horses can pull about 9000 pounds.
How many pounds can 4 horses pull?
Arithmetic response is 18000.
Answer reasonable. But it’s wrong.
Four horses can actually pull over
30000 pounds.
IT’S SYNERGY THAT MAKES THE
DIFFERENCE.
It simply means,
"two heads are better than one”
Have you ever seen a
flock of geese heading
south for the winter in
a “V” formation?
Synergy is Everywhere
• The whole flock can fly 71%
faster
• When goose flaps it’s wings,
it creates an updraft for the
goose that follows
• As the lead goose gets tired, he
rotates to the back of the “V” &
another takes the lead
• Geese in the back honk to
encourage those in the lead
• When a goose gets out of
formation, he immediately feels
the resistance of flying alone
and gets back in formation
Negative Synergy
Negative Synergy
The whole is worse than it’s parts.
"2 + 2 = 3" effect
This means that the combination of two
efforts from two individuals have a lesser
output than they would attained if they have
worked separately.
•Smart, hardworking people gather, waste time,
and make a bad decision.
Result of Negative Synergy
Negative synergy refers to "2 + 2 = 3" effect.
The result of negative synergy is waste. The
meeting is a waste of time for everyone involved,
and time is money.
7th Habit
Sharpen The Saw.
It’s “Me Time”
Sharpen The Saw
 Sharpen the Saw means preserving and enhancing the
greatest asset you have--you.
 It means having a balanced program for self-renewal in
the four areas of your life
The 4 Dimensions Of Renewal
1. Physical dimension. (Body)
2. Mental dimension. (Mind)
3. Social / Emotional dimension.
(Heart)
4. Spiritual dimension. (Soul)
Renewal Yourself
“Renewal is the principle—and the process—that
empowers us to move on an upward spiral of growth and
change, of continuous improvement. "
Exercise
A good exercise program is one we can do in our own home and
one that builds our body in three areas:
 Endurance (aerobic exercise)
Body Mass Index (BMI)
 Flexibility (stretching)
 Strength (i.e. weights or sit-ups).
Relaxation
is the emotional state of a living being, of low tension, in which there is an
absence of arousal that could come from sources such as anger, anxiety,
or fear.
2.The Mental dimension
is about reading good literature on a regular basis to renew our
minds. Also, keeping a journal of our thoughts, experiences and
insights is far more beneficial than over exposure to television.
Listening
Group Discussion
Teaching
Learning New Skills
Reading
Writing
Solve Puzzles
Planing
3.The Social/emotional dimension
is highly related to our sense of personal security. Intrinsic security
doesn’t come from from our circumstances or our position. It
comes from within.
It comes from accurate paradigms and correct principles deep in
our own hearts. It comes from inside.
 Build Relationship
 Give Services
 Laugh/Smile
 Picnic With Friends or
Family
Empathy
Caring For Your Heart
Relationship Bank Account
 Keep promises
 Be loyal
 Say you are sorry
 Do small act of kindness
Personal Bank Account
Keep promises to yourself
 Be gentle to yourself
 Be honest
 Renew yourself
4.The Spiritual dimension
is our core, our centre, our commitment to our value system.
This dimension is related to a very private area of our lives and
draws upon the sources that inspire and uplift us. “And people
do it very, very differently.
 Prayer /Worship
 Spending time in nature
Values
Meditation
Commitment
 Music/Art
Renewal should be balanced renewal in all four dimensions
physical mental social and spiritual dimensions. Neglecting
any one area negatively impact the rest.
Balanced Renewal
Excess of everything is bad
 Renewal in any dimension increases our ability to live at least one
of 7 habits.
 Improvement in one habit synergistically increases our ability to
live the rest.
 Daily private victory is the key to the development of the seven
habits and it is completely within your circle of influence.
Synergy in Renewal
