The 7 habits of Highly Effective People is one of the best selling
books of Stephen Covey. In this self help book Stephen talks
about the 7 habits which leads to happiness and success.
These habits can help people to move from the state of
dependence to independence and ultimately to
interdependence. The book follows an inside-out approach
which means change starts from within. This approach gives
importance to character ethic of people.

a quick fix technique. It is a character based
code for human interaction and

● We think about succeeding in terms of
someone else failing- that is, if I win, you
lose; or if you win, I lose. Life becomes a
zero-sum game.
● Win-win sees life as a cooperative arena, not
a competitive one. Win-win is a frame of
mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual
benefits from all human interactions
● Win-win means agreements or solutions are
mutually beneficial and satisfying
A PERSON OR ORGANIZATION THAT APPROACHES
CONFLICTS WITH A WIN.WIN ATTITUDE POSSESSES
THREE VITAL CHARACTER TRAITS:
1. Integrity: sticking with your true feelings, values,
and commitments
2. Maturity: expressing your ideas and feelings with
courage and consideration for the ideas and
feelings of others
3. Abundance Mentality: believing there is plenty for
everyone.
Win-win requires that you be both,
• It is a balancing act between courage and consideration.
• To go for win-win, you not only have to be empathic, but
you also have to be confident.
7. Habit 5
Seek first to understand,
then to be understood
Communication is the most important skill in life,
We spend years learning how to read and write,
and years learning how to speak. But what about
listening?
We listen to ourselves as we prepare in our mind
what we are going to say, the questions we are
going to ask, etc. We filter everything we hear
through our life experiences, our frame of
reference.
We tend to respond in one of four ways:
1. Evaluating: You judge and then either agree or
disagree.
2. Probing: You ask questions from your own
frame of reference.
3. Advising: You give counsel, advice, and
solutions to problems.
4. Interpreting: You analyze others' motives and
behaviors based on your own experiences.

Synergize
Realize that the “Synergy” of
group members can help in
achieving goals that aren’t
possible individually
● Collective energy of the group
has higher ability to accomplish
tasks efficiently
● Collating individual goals and
motivating the team towards a
common goal can help achieve
a “win-win” situation (think Habit
4)
● Being open and embracing
varying opinions is the only way
to “synergize”.
9. Habit 7
Sharpen the saw
The time we spend renewing ourselves physically,
spiritually, psychologically, and socially is essential
if we are to be productive in our work. Continuous
renewal helps us to strengthen our capacity to
practise each habit by working together as a team.
Each of the other habits is surrounded by it, and
each one is made possible by the preservation and
enhancement of your most valuable possession —
you yourself.
There are four aspects to our nature, and each one must
be engaged on a regular basis and in a balanced manner:
● Physical Dimension: The purpose of continual
physical development is to train our bodies in a
manner that will increase our ability to work, adapt,
and enjoy our lives more thoroughly.
● Spiritual Dimension: Developing our spiritual self
has the objective of providing direction for our
lives and reinforcing our commitment to a set of
values that we believe in.
● Mental Dimension: The purpose of reclaiming our
mental health is to continue to broaden our
understanding of the world.
● Social/emotional dimension: The purpose of
renewing oneself socially is to build meaningful
interactions with other individuals.
