Research
A strength of my research was that firstly, the mind maps that I produced helped me to initially
think of multiple ideas for an audio documentary. I was able to identify three genres and suggest
what specific content that they will feature such as the types of music and sounds. Secondly,
through research I was able to listen to 3 audio documentary podcasts on the BBC One website
which gave me more of an understanding on the types of features I could include in my own audio
documentary such as; the way that the dialogue is spoken, music to change the atmosphere and
influence the mood, sounds to convey emotion. Listening to the podcasts also further influenced
both; my decision on choosing the genre of my audio documentary and my use of detailed
language and punctuation. A weakness of my research was perhaps not listening to a wider variety
of podcasts as doing so would have further influenced these decisions and would have possibly
resulted in choosing a completely different genre for my audio documentary however, a horror style
audio documentary was an idea I had in mind in the earlier stages of research.
Planning
A strength of planning was producing three initial ideas in which I went into detail for each one about
the specific features that would be included such as the type of music, sounds and vocabulary used for
the specific genres I had chosen to explore. A weakness of planning could possibly be the amount of
ideas and information I had to discredit however this would have been more of a problem if it was
necessary to explore more than three initial ideas.
Time Management
My time was not managed so well with particular project as I had lost a lot of data during production due to
losing my USB memory stick however there weren’t any stages of production that were too time consuming with
the exception of research as the podcasts we had to analyse were 40+ minutes each. If the podcasts would have
shorter, then my analysis of each podcasts would have been something I could have improved with additional
time. If I overall had more time to produce my work I would have perhaps done extensive research or include
additional dialogue onto my audio recording such as a spoken introduction rather than just a brief audio
introduction.
Technical Qualities
• One BBC Radio 4 Podcast – The Witching Hour is one of the podcasts included in my research which is an existing product
that is fairly similar to my own. The main similarity is the genre of the podcast as the supernatural is a subject that verges on
the genre in which I chose for my own audio documentary. Although the genre of these two products are slightly different,
the sounds in which I used however, were very similar such as the heavy breathing, panicked and scream type of noises. I
personally think the products are similar in the way that the dialogue is spoken as there is allot of descriptive imagery and
emphasis on certain words and phrases used however I think that the dialogue from the BBC Radio One podcast was spoken
far better due to my lack of experience, confidence and technology as their audio equipment is of a far better quality than
what I had access to.
Aural Qualities
One think that could have been improved was the delivery of speech as I feel like certain words could have been altered or
pronounced clearer. I could have also improved on the ending of the audio as there was no sound fade which resulted in the audio
coming to a sudden end. In terms of creativity, the script is completely original as it does not copy and cannot be compared to
any other existing products which is an aspect I specifically like about my product. Another aspect I like about my product is the
variety of sounds I used in my product. A strength to this was editing and cropping certain sounds so that they are in sync with my
audio. The biggest weakness of my product would be that there is a long pause towards the beginning of product as the audio
transitions from the introduction to the spoken audio.
Audience Appeal
I have appealed to my audience by featuring many aspects that are considered to fit into the horror genre for example; creepy context,
chilling sounds and descriptive writing. The sounds effects that I featured were things like echoed screams, demonic chants and
distressed human noises. The horror genre has a very devoted fan base and although there are a small number of improvements I
would make, my product features a lot of aspects that are consistent with products of the horror genre therefore appealing to the
people with these particular interests.

Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
• I like the context of the product. It is creepy but interesting.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• I think that the product could have been longer.
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I think that he included a wide variety of sounds and the intro is very creepy
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• He could have added a smoother transition in-between the intro and the main audio
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– The sounds are relevant and effective
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• There was one or two long pauses in the product
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
• I agree with a the two statements that mention the pauses because there was points in my audio in which
I left out transitions between background noises. This was because I did not edit the sounds so that they
would fade in and out.
– What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
– I disagree with the statement that says my product should have been longer. The story doesn’t drag
however it uses descriptive language.
Peer Feedback Summary
The changes that I would have made are, editing sounds so that they do not suddenly cut out and
re recording the audio so that certain words are taken out and spoken more clearly. I would edit
the sounds because I received feedback in which two statements were made about not featuring
smoother transitions. The reason why I would re record the spoken audio is that I personally feel
that some of the wording I used could be incorrect or mispronounced however I would not
change the sounds and descriptive language I used to create a more of a creepy atmosphere.
