2. WHAT IS DIVERSITY?
Diversity: The state of being
different or varied from
each other is known as
diversity.
Diversity add variety to our
lives by:
1. It teaches us to be tolerant
among different people.
2. It helps to absorb many
cultures.
3. It teaches us that same
thing can be done in
different ways.

3. DIVERSITY IN INDIA
India is land of
immense
diversity-
 Geographic diversity
Linguistic diversity
 Religious diversity
Cultural diversity

4. GEOGRAPHIC DIVERSITY
 Mountains in the
north.
 Coastal areas in
the south.
 Arid desert on the
west.
 Tropical rainforest
on the east.

5. LINGUISTIC DIVERSITY
 People in India speak
more than 1,600
languages and dialects.
 Among these 22
languages are included in
the eighth schedule of
Indian constitution.
 Hindi and English are
used for official purpose
by the government.
 Hindi written in
Devanagiri script.

 People of India have
different kind of food
habits, dressing style,
dance form and
customs.

8. How did diversity emerge?
 India has seen foreigners from various parts of the
world coming and settling down in India.
 They brought with them their own customs and
practices.
 Which combined with the prevalent traditions and
created a composite culture.
 Example , the Mughals came from Central Asia
and established their kingdom in India.
 They brought with them Persian language, which
merged with Hindi to give rise to a new language-
Urdu.

 India is known for
‘unity in diversity’.
 This phrase was
coined by Jawaharlal
Nehru
 Despite the
differences in
languages, religions,
cultures and
traditions people of
India have lived
harmoniously.
