The neural control of breathing involves several groups of neurons located in the medulla and pons of the brainstem. The dorsal respiratory group in the medulla generates the basic rhythm of respiration and produces inspiratory neuronal activity. The ventral respiratory group contains both inspiratory and expiratory neurons and controls inspiratory and expiratory muscles during exercise. Additionally, the pons contains the pneumotaxic center which regulates respiratory rate, and the apneustic center which produces powerful inspirations. Together these centers integrate to control breathing through feedback loops and motor output.
