3. Wild Life and Food
• Wild animals exert significant influences on food production systems which may be
positive or negative. Positive influences include the role of wild animals as seed
dispersal and pollination agents as well as use of wild animal droppings as
fertilisers. Many species of birds and mammals such as bats, monkeys, baboons
and squirrels are known to spread fruit trees by their feeding action. A study in the
Cote d'Ivoire found that sites where elephants had vanished long ago lacked
saplings of certain tree species which are known to be dispersed by elephants
(Alexandra, 1978)

Historically, agricultural practices on public/ private land created many
different kinds of wildlife habitat. Odd areas, shelterbelts, hedgerows, and
fields in rotation provided havens for wildlife species that preferred
relatively undisturbed areas to rest, reproduce, and find protection from
predators or the weather.

Cultivated fields offered food sources that
were important for many species, such as the
waste grain that fueled the long flights of
migratory birds. Some ground-nesting birds
built nests and raised young in cultivated
fields.

Despite the adaptation of many wildlife
species to life on and around agricultural land,
wildlife and fish populations have declined
over much of the agricultural landscape in the
Umted States in recent decades. Many
individuals and organizations are concerned
about the future welfare of wildlife and fish
populations in the face of these declines

8. Wild Life Basic Components
All wildlife species require four basic
components: food, cover, water, and space. The
proper types, amounts, and arrangement of
these requirements vary among species. Species
utilize an area if supplied with the right types,
sufficient amounts, and proper arrangement of
these components at correct times of the year.
Properties that have an insufficient arrangement
or quantity of any one of these necessities will
not support a given wildlife species.

quality habitat will support a higher density of
animals. Decide what types of wildlife you
want to attract, determine which of their basic
four requirements could be improved on your
property, and then develop a plan to provide
these requirements
