  1. Facebook gets more weekly traffic than Google in the US.  With more than 400 million users voluntarily tagging likes and dislikes, filling out detailed profiles and connecting to an average of 130 friends apiece.  Facebook is probably the world’s largest owner of private demographic and psychographic data in the world.  Twitter has ballooned to a point where it’s become the world’s watercooler.  Both of these tools give small business the uncanny ability to see inside the lives of their customers.  Not only that – but to see how their market speaks to them and about them – in their own words.  Don’t let this trend pass you by.Search the Twitter RSS Feed: Go to search.twitter.com and enter in your brand/company to see how people are talking about you.  Here is what a search on “BP oil spill” yields:Use TweetDeck to group specific segments of users or track key industry terms
  2. Viral surveys are THE LATEST innovation in collaborative research. Viral marketing is everywhere, so why should market research be different?  There is too much emphasis on data as opposed to insight.  Surveys will evolve from being a one-way street between the respondent and the researcher to a more collaborative model.
  3. .  In the same way that we’ve learned to communicate in 140 characters with Twitter, we will learn to survey using tools like MicroPoll for one-off polling that is quick, easy and cheap.  Your audience is in learning and interactive mode on Facebook and Twitter and polls are ideal ways to get their input and gather market data at the same time.  Start looking at research as a quantifiable conversation.-            Free polling applications are everywhere!  MicroPoll is my favorite.  But also check out TwitPoll, and PollDaddyalso has a facebook application.  Blogging platforms like WordPress also have polling plugins that you can use for your blog.
  4. Making a poll is EASY!  Be sure to only focus on one specific question such as “Do you like pizza (yes/no).  When you write your questions, make sure that all possible options are included. 
  5. .  One of the most common requests I get is to help people determine the market size for a potential new business.  All I can say is “Why pay a consultant when so much of the data is already there?!”-       Check out public data sets like Google Public Data Explorer where you can find fantastic information like “unemployment in the US, or “Cancer Cases in the US”.-       And for really interesting and fun information on everything from the number of white house visitors to social networks for women, check out Socrata – it’s a community site that opens government data to the community.  In a way it’s like a Wikipedia for data.  You upload a data set that you own and the community contributes to it.-       What if you wanted to get Amazon Book’s sales or find out what the gross profit for IBM was in 2008?
