A bibliography is a list of sources used in an essay or research paper. It provides credit to sources and shows that ideas were borrowed, not stolen, to avoid plagiarism. A bibliography also offers additional information for readers and is often required for a grade. The basic format requires sources be listed alphabetically with consistent indentation and formatting for titles, authors, publishers and dates. Examples show proper citation formats for books, websites, encyclopedia articles and magazines.

3. 1. To give credit to sources of words, ideas, diagrams, illustrations, quotations borrowed, or any materials summarized or paraphrased. 2. To show that you are borrowing other people’s ideas not stealing them. To prove that you are not plagiarizing. Why must you do a bibliography?

4. What is plagiarism ? Plagiarism is when someone steals and passes off the ideas or words of another as their own. Ex.: If you copy a classmate’s homework and turn it in as if you had done it on your own.

5. 3. To offer additional information to your readers who may wish to read more about your topic. 4. Your teacher insists that you do a bibliography or points will be deducted from your grade.

6. Basic format for a bibliography. For each source listed, begin first line at margin and indent each line that follows six spaces. Underline or use italics for tiles of books, periodicals and software. Titles of articles are enclosed in quotation marks. If required information, such as author or place of publication, is not available, just leave it out. Arrange all sources in one list, alphabetically by first word, which will be either the author’s last name or the first important word of the title.

It is especially important to try to find out about the author of an Internet document, whether a person, organization or institution.
