OBJECTIVE OF STUDY
1. To improve the writing skills.
2. To make students more motivated to learn the
English language skills.
3. To give them awareness about the usefulness of
authentic materials e.g. newspaper, art, weather
reports, horoscope etc.
4. To bring the native culture and traditions in the
classroom.
5. To make them feel as the users of the language
rather than a mere learners.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
1.This study provides useful information about
the use of authentic materials in classrooms.
2. It provides modern techniques for teaching
of writing skills in the classrooms
3. It helps both students and teacher to
improve the writing skills.
WHAT IS WRITING?
Writing in the strict sense of the word is
derived from speech, and is, in fact, an
imperfect visual representation of it, for
such purpose as communication at a
distance and the keeping of records.
Writing is the only conventional device for
recording sounds.
Writing is something, which has an aim,
purpose and meaning to convey. It is not
just a grammatical exercise and a
sequence of sentences.
AUTHENTIC MATERIALS
Authentic Materials are language materials that
were originally intended for native speakers,
not second-language learners.
Nunan and Miller (1995) define authentic
materials as those which were not created or
edited expressly for language learners. This
means that most everyday objects in the target
language qualify as authentic materials.
IMPORTANCE OF AUTHENTIC MATERIALS
There are various ways, means and techniques
involved in teaching writing. Authentic
materials are one of those but are very
interesting, absorbing and motivating. It is
diverse in nature and has a variety of things to
offer. It has become popular for last decade or
so and is a very impressive technique in
teaching L2 in the classrooms.

RESEARCH STRATEGY
Qualitative research methodology is used in this
research.
POPULATION
The population consisted of students of 10th
Class both male and female.
From Shah-E-Hamdan College of Commerce
Mirpur
LIMITATIONS & DELIMITATION
For this study only one college is selected from
Mirpur City.
DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS
The data collection instrument were exercises. The
complete survey is provided in Appendix .
DATA PRESENTATION
Data is presented in text form.
LESSON PLAN FOR WRITING SKILLS
A detail Lesson Plan is made to teach
writing skills.
Which is submitted to Madam Qudsia
Ghori.

FINDINGS
1. The use of authentic materials in the classroom to raise
the motivation level of the students.
2. These are real life communication.
3. The teaching methodology applied is both encouraging
and exciting.
4. The teachers used the modern techniques in the
classroom.
5. Students’ participation during the lesson is very high.
6. They are able to produce a piece of written work.
7. Students activate their mind to think, observe and depict
their original ideas in the form of words.
8. Teachers devise the activities for teaching of writing skills.
RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The textbook should be supplemented with appropriate
authentic materials to make them more stimulating and
inspiring to the students.
2. Authentic material is a useful and ideal starting point in the
classroom.
3. It holds great promise for learners who direct their
attention on practical language use.
4. Teachers should use authentic materials in classrooms to
arouse students’ interest.
5. Students should be encouraged to participate in the class
activities.
6. Teachers should be given adequate training to make them
teach language in an effective manner and style.
CONCLUSION
Writing is a literacy skill and a complex form of self-
expression. English is a common language being understood
and used for communication in the world. It is considered as a
key to success. The college students in Pakistan have taken
twelve years coaching for English language but do not have
mastery in English writings. Commonly, they take it just to
pass the examination instead to have hands on practice. If the
language teachers should use authentic materials for the
purpose of teaching writing skills, students defiantly learn and
understand this skill easy and express their ideas in a better
way.

Improving Writing Skills through Authentic Materials

  • 3. OBJECTIVE OF STUDY 1. To improve the writing skills. 2. To make students more motivated to learn the English language skills. 3. To give them awareness about the usefulness of authentic materials e.g. newspaper, art, weather reports, horoscope etc. 4. To bring the native culture and traditions in the classroom. 5. To make them feel as the users of the language rather than a mere learners.
  • 4. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY 1.This study provides useful information about the use of authentic materials in classrooms. 2. It provides modern techniques for teaching of writing skills in the classrooms 3. It helps both students and teacher to improve the writing skills.
  • 5. WHAT IS WRITING? Writing in the strict sense of the word is derived from speech, and is, in fact, an imperfect visual representation of it, for such purpose as communication at a distance and the keeping of records. Writing is the only conventional device for recording sounds. Writing is something, which has an aim, purpose and meaning to convey. It is not just a grammatical exercise and a sequence of sentences.
  • 6. AUTHENTIC MATERIALS Authentic Materials are language materials that were originally intended for native speakers, not second-language learners. Nunan and Miller (1995) define authentic materials as those which were not created or edited expressly for language learners. This means that most everyday objects in the target language qualify as authentic materials.
  • 7. IMPORTANCE OF AUTHENTIC MATERIALS There are various ways, means and techniques involved in teaching writing. Authentic materials are one of those but are very interesting, absorbing and motivating. It is diverse in nature and has a variety of things to offer. It has become popular for last decade or so and is a very impressive technique in teaching L2 in the classrooms.

  • 9. RESEARCH STRATEGY Qualitative research methodology is used in this research. POPULATION The population consisted of students of 10th Class both male and female. From Shah-E-Hamdan College of Commerce Mirpur
  • 10. LIMITATIONS & DELIMITATION For this study only one college is selected from Mirpur City. DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS The data collection instrument were exercises. The complete survey is provided in Appendix . DATA PRESENTATION Data is presented in text form.

  • 16. FINDINGS 1. The use of authentic materials in the classroom to raise the motivation level of the students. 2. These are real life communication. 3. The teaching methodology applied is both encouraging and exciting. 4. The teachers used the modern techniques in the classroom. 5. Students’ participation during the lesson is very high. 6. They are able to produce a piece of written work. 7. Students activate their mind to think, observe and depict their original ideas in the form of words. 8. Teachers devise the activities for teaching of writing skills.
  • 17. RECOMMENDATIONS 1. The textbook should be supplemented with appropriate authentic materials to make them more stimulating and inspiring to the students. 2. Authentic material is a useful and ideal starting point in the classroom. 3. It holds great promise for learners who direct their attention on practical language use. 4. Teachers should use authentic materials in classrooms to arouse students’ interest. 5. Students should be encouraged to participate in the class activities. 6. Teachers should be given adequate training to make them teach language in an effective manner and style.
  • 18. CONCLUSION Writing is a literacy skill and a complex form of self- expression. English is a common language being understood and used for communication in the world. It is considered as a key to success. The college students in Pakistan have taken twelve years coaching for English language but do not have mastery in English writings. Commonly, they take it just to pass the examination instead to have hands on practice. If the language teachers should use authentic materials for the purpose of teaching writing skills, students defiantly learn and understand this skill easy and express their ideas in a better way.
