2. Nuclear energy is made in power plants by
splitting the nuclei of heavy atoms such as
uranium.
This splitting of nuclei ( nuclear fission )
releases a very large amount of energy.
3. Two types of nuclear reactions
which release energy
1 FISSION of the nuclei of some heavy elements.
it is employed in power station and for marine
propulsion
2 FUSION of he nuclei of certain light elements.
a reaction inwhich to or more atomic nuclei come
close enough to form onr or more diffrent atomic
nuclei
4. Advantages of nuclear energy
Clean energy. It is the largest source of clean power.
Create jobs.
supports national security
A lot of energy is generated from a single power plant.
Disadvantages of nuclear energy
Public awareness. It is sometimes viewed by the
general public as a dangerous or unstable process.
High operation costs. Construction of new power
plants.
Transportation, storage and disposal of nuclear
wastes.
5. There are
presently 22
reactors with a
total capacity of
6780 MW in
operation and
one reactor,
KAPP-3 (700 MW)
has been
connected to the
grid on January
