2. What is Nuclear Power?
Nuclear Power is Energy from Splitting
Uranium Atoms.
3. How Does Nuclear Power Work?
1. Nuclear fission is a type of nuclear
reaction. It occurs when a neutron is
absorbed by a uranium atom making it
unstable. It then splits releasing a large
amount of energy.
2. Creates Heat with the energy that then
turns into steam.
3. Steam turns the turbines.
4. Turbines turn generators.
5. Generators store the electricity.

6. Some Pros of Using Nuclear Power:
Nuclear power doesn’t rely on fossil fuels.
Because it doesn’t rely on fossil fuels, it isn’t
effected by fluctuating oil and gas prices.
CO2 emissions are minimal.
Nuclear Power Plants create less radioactive
waste that coal-fired plants.
Nuclear Power created roughly 1 million times
more energy than fossil fuel alternatives.
It is cheaper because it doesn’t use expensive
fossil fuels.

7. Some Cons of Using Nuclear Power:
Accidents can cause radiation, making the
environment unsafe for a long time.
Uranium is very rare, you have to spend long
periods of time mining in places like Canada and
Australia. It is a non-renewable resource.
Radioactive waste that Uranium creates can be
used to make Nuclear weapons.
If a terrorist group were to attack a nuclear
power plant, the results could be devastating.
Radio active waste is dangerous and takes tens of
thousands of years before it is safe again.

8. What is Nuclear Power being used
for, and where is it being used?
Nuclear Power is being used in 30 different
countries like China, S. Korea, Japan, Canada,
and the USA.
Nuclear power is being used in parts of these
30 countries to power everything from
homes, to factories.
19.2% of the world’s power is nuclear.

9. Summary:
There are many disadvantages and many
advantages to nuclear power. However, we believe
the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. We
do not believe that we should rely on nuclear
power as an alternative source for energy.
California has banned all new nuclear power
plants since the 1970s. Santa Barbara could not
run on nuclear power even if it wants to.
