Nuclear Energy :
Introduction :
A form of energy created by severing an atom's nucleus is known as nuclear energy. Nuclear fission
is the process of splitting the nucleus, and it produces a huge quantity of energy. Electricity, heat, and
other forms of energy can be created with this energy. Nuclear energy is regarded as a sustainable
and dependable energy source because it emits no greenhouse gases and can provide electricity
continuously.
The Evolution of Nuclear Energy :
The discovery that breaking an atom's nucleus might release a sizable quantity of energy marks the
beginning of nuclear energy in the 1930s. Enrico Fermi constructed the first nuclear reactor in 1942
to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons. The usage of nuclear energy for the production of
electricity grew during the ensuing years. Both the first commercial nuclear power plant in the
United States and the first nuclear power plant in the United Kingdom were inaugurated in 1956 and
1957, respectively.
Using Nuclear Energy :
Splitting an atom's nucleus releases nuclear energy. A significant quantity of energy is released
during this process, which can be exploited to generate power. Uranium is the substance that is
utilized the most frequently to create nuclear energy. Neutrons hit uranium atoms, splitting the
nucleus as a result. More neutrons are released during this process, along with a sizable amount of
energy.
Nuclear fission generates energy that is used to heat water, which creates steam. After that, the steam
powers a turbine that is attached to a generator. Electricity generated by the generator is subsequently
delivered to residences and establishments. Nuclear fission can also be used to generate heat for other
purposes, such as heating homes or creating hydrogen fuel.
Benefits of Nuclear Power :
Nuclear energy has some benefits. The fact that it emits no greenhouse gases is one of its key
benefits. As a result, it qualifies as a renewable and environmentally responsible source of energy.
Nuclear power facilities can run nonstop for 24 hours, which makes nuclear energy incredibly
dependable. Because of this, it serves as a great source of base-load electricity, which is essential to
supplying the ongoing need for electricity.
Moreover, nuclear energy is quite effective. The energy generated by nuclear fission is significantly
more than the energy generated by conventional energy sources, such as coal or natural gas. This
means that nuclear power plants can generate a lot of electricity using only a little fuel. Since
gasoline is relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of other energy sources, this makes it a
financially viable source of energy.
Negative aspects of nuclear energy :
Nuclear energy has many drawbacks as well. The danger of accidents is one of the biggest
drawbacks. Accidents can still happen even if nuclear power plants are designed to be secure. The
Chornobyl disaster in 1986 and the Fukushima disaster in 2011 are the two most noteworthy nuclear
mishaps in history. Both the loss of human life and the considerable environmental damage caused
by these events.
The issue of radioactive waste is another drawback of nuclear energy. Nuclear fission generates
radioactive waste that is extremely dangerous to both human health and the environment. This waste
disposal is extremely difficult because it might be radioactive for a very long time. The majority of
radioactive waste is now kept on-site at nuclear power facilities, which is dangerous for the
environment.
Due to its connection to nuclear weapons, nuclear energy is also incredibly contentious. Uranium
must be enriched to produce nuclear energy, but this process can also be used to create nuclear
bombs. As a result, there are no worries about the spread of nuclear weapons and the possibility of
nuclear war.
Present Nuclear Energy Situation :
Around 10% of the electricity in the world is presently produced from nuclear energy. Currently,
there are 443 nuclear power reactors with a total installed capacity of 396 GW running all over the
world.
