This document defines literacy as the ability to read, write, speak and listen. It discusses how many people in the world, especially in developing countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, lack access to education and suffer from illiteracy. It highlights the work of Greg Mortenson who established over 171 schools, mostly for girls, in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan through his non-profit Central Asia Institute to promote literacy and peace through education. Literacy rates in Pakistan range from 87% in Islamabad to just 20% in Kohlu District, with older generations having lower rates than younger people.
