Literacy is traditionally defined as the ability to read, write, listen and speak, though some definitions also include spelling. Many people in poor countries lack access to education and are illiterate. However, Greg Mortenson has worked to establish over 171 schools, most for girls, through his non-profit Central Asia Institute to promote literacy and peace in remote parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Literacy rates in Pakistan range widely from 87% in Islamabad to just 20% in Kohlu District, and rates have been increasing for younger generations over time according to statistics from 2000-2004.
