Introduction:
Through this research Researcher wants
tostudythereadinghabitsofB.Ed.studentsinorder
to know what these students are reading, has their
reading pattern changed after enrolling on B.Ed.
course,Aretheypreparingthemselvesinanywayto
fit in the job of a teacher? Reading and teaching are
considered complementary to each other and it is
assumed that a teacher has to be a good reader.
Through this research researcher wants to study
B.Ed. students’ opinion about this assumption.
Rationaleoftheresearch:
This study will be useful for the institutions that are
runningtheirownB.Ed.,D.Ed.collegesandbelieve
ingivingqualityeducation.Thisstudywillbeuseful
for them to know the current status of reading of
B.Ed. students and thus can improve upon it. This
study will throw light on present status of reading
amongtheB.Ed.students.Thestudywillalsohelpful
foreducationalpolicymakers,B.Ed.syllabusframing
committees and all departments of education.
Ultimately the study will be useful for educational
scholars, who are always interested in qualitative
evaluation of the current education system.
MethodologyandSamplingissue:
This research uses Traingulation method that
incorporate Quantitative methode as forground
method and Qualitative methode as a background
method.
Surveyasadatacollectionmethod:
ThesamplingmethodusedfortheselectionofB.Ed.
students was convenience sampling. Convenient
sample(alsoknownasavailablesample)isacollection
of readily accessible subjects. A government B.Ed.
collegeinPunei.e.P.D.D.M.B.Ed.collegeBaner,was
selected. All the B.Ed. students of this college (87/
100)wererequestedtofillupthequestionnaire.Then
these questionnaires were analyzed.
Interviewasadatacollectionmethod:
For intensive interviews 13 students were selected
fromallthe87respondents,outofwhich9weremale
and 4 were female. Here the type of sampling was
volunteer sampling.
Conclusions:-
The responses received from the
respondents did attain the objectives designed.With
respect to first objective which gets answered by the
survey. Most of the B.Ed. students were from Arts
backgroundascomparedtoScienceandCommerce,
mostofthemcametoB.Ed.aftercompletingtheirpost
graduation(atleastfirstyearoftheirpost-graduation)
In terms of socio-economic background almost all
thestudentswerefromhumbleeconomicbackground.
MajorityoftheB.Ed.studentswerefromSECBand
SECC,incaseofthegendermalestudentsweremore
in number than female students .(in this study there
wasmajorityofmenwith65%.) Secondobjectiveof
the study was to find out whether B.Ed. students do
extracurricular reading and if yes calculation of the
averagereadingtimeoftherespondents.Inresponse
to this objective it was found out that almost all the
B.Ed.studentsdoextracurricularreadingintheform
of newspaper or books. Their reading time differs
from30minutesto2hoursbutthecalculatedaverage
time was 0 to 30 minutes per day.
In the same objective the patterns of their
extracurricularreadingwerealsostudied,itwasseen
thatmostoftheB.Ed.students(56%)aredailyreaders,
where as 28% students like to read during weekends
while about 16% students read books when they are
on long vacations. Further it was found out that out
of all media newspaper was the most favorite media
fortheB.Ed.students.54%respondentsaidthatthey
prefer everyday newspaper over any other reading
medium. Also it was found out that very few
respondentswerereadingEnglishnewspapers.Most
of the B.Ed. students were primarily interested in
news (32%), apart from that 21% respondents were
reading editorials and scholarly articles related to
various issues, 16% respondents were interested in
reading cartoons and stories, 14% respondents were
reading newspaper because they want to read
supplementsdedicatedtoeducationandsomearticles
written by teachers about 10th
standard preparation,
which would help them during lesson notes
preparation. 15% respondents gave miscellaneous

answers like to read letter to editors, to read poems,
tosolvepuzzlesalltheseresponseswerecodedunder
category Afternewspapersbooksweremuchpopular
(21%)amongthestudents.itwasfoundoutthatB.Ed.
studentsreadbookswhicharerecommendedbytheir
teachers (27%) after that books are read which are
suggested by friends (25%) and 22% students read
the books which there in references of the course
content and 16% students were observed reading
the books which were reviewed by the newspaper.
8% respondents read the books which they saw at
bookstallsorexhibition.Themostfavorite genreof
book for reading was novel with 26% and the least
favorite genre was poetry with just 5%. It was also
found out that students prefer college library most
for reading books than any other source.After books
internet was the medium rated by the B.Ed. students
(15%) and least favorite medium was magazines
(11%)internetwaslessfavoritebecauseitwasanew
technology which was yet to be explored by the
respondentplustheavailabilitywasinfrequentwithin
the college. In case of the magazines price and
availability in the college library was the
issue.Through this research it was found out that
more than 50% of the students do discuss their
reading with their friends every day. More than 60%
B.Ed. students admitted that they don’t get enough
time to read because of the busy schedule of B.Ed.
When data for last objective i.e. are respondents
readinganythingtopreparethemselvesforthefuture
job, was analyzed. It was found out that 33%
respondents were reading reference books about
their subject, 28% respondents were reading
educational magazines and education supplements
in the newspaper. 21% respondents were reading
books or magazines for general knowledge 12%
respondents were reading biographies of famous
people, which in turn inspire them.

Reading and teaching are considered complementary to each other and it is assumed that a teacher has to be a good reader. Through this research researcher wants to study B.Ed. students’ opinion about this assumption. Rationaleoftheresearch: This study will be useful for the institutions that are runningtheirownB.Ed.,D.Ed.collegesandbelieve ingivingqualityeducation.Thisstudywillbeuseful for them to know the current status of reading of B.Ed. students and thus can improve upon it. This study will throw light on present status of reading amongtheB.Ed.students.Thestudywillalsohelpful foreducationalpolicymakers,B.Ed.syllabusframing committees and all departments of education. Ultimately the study will be useful for educational scholars, who are always interested in qualitative evaluation of the current education system. MethodologyandSamplingissue: This research uses Traingulation method that incorporate Quantitative methode as forground method and Qualitative methode as a background method. Surveyasadatacollectionmethod: ThesamplingmethodusedfortheselectionofB.Ed. students was convenience sampling. Convenient sample(alsoknownasavailablesample)isacollection of readily accessible subjects. A government B.Ed. collegeinPunei.e.P.D.D.M.B.Ed.collegeBaner,was selected. All the B.Ed. students of this college (87/ 100)wererequestedtofillupthequestionnaire.Then these questionnaires were analyzed. Interviewasadatacollectionmethod: For intensive interviews 13 students were selected fromallthe87respondents,outofwhich9weremale and 4 were female. Here the type of sampling was volunteer sampling. Conclusions:- The responses received from the respondents did attain the objectives designed.With respect to first objective which gets answered by the survey. Most of the B.Ed. students were from Arts backgroundascomparedtoScienceandCommerce, mostofthemcametoB.Ed.aftercompletingtheirpost graduation(atleastfirstyearoftheirpost-graduation) In terms of socio-economic background almost all thestudentswerefromhumbleeconomicbackground. MajorityoftheB.Ed.studentswerefromSECBand SECC,incaseofthegendermalestudentsweremore in number than female students .(in this study there wasmajorityofmenwith65%.) Secondobjectiveof the study was to find out whether B.Ed. students do extracurricular reading and if yes calculation of the averagereadingtimeoftherespondents.Inresponse to this objective it was found out that almost all the B.Ed.studentsdoextracurricularreadingintheform of newspaper or books. Their reading time differs from30minutesto2hoursbutthecalculatedaverage time was 0 to 30 minutes per day. In the same objective the patterns of their extracurricularreadingwerealsostudied,itwasseen thatmostoftheB.Ed.students(56%)aredailyreaders, where as 28% students like to read during weekends while about 16% students read books when they are on long vacations. Further it was found out that out of all media newspaper was the most favorite media fortheB.Ed.students.54%respondentsaidthatthey prefer everyday newspaper over any other reading medium. Also it was found out that very few respondentswerereadingEnglishnewspapers.Most of the B.Ed. students were primarily interested in news (32%), apart from that 21% respondents were reading editorials and scholarly articles related to various issues, 16% respondents were interested in reading cartoons and stories, 14% respondents were reading newspaper because they want to read supplementsdedicatedtoeducationandsomearticles written by teachers about 10th standard preparation, which would help them during lesson notes preparation. 15% respondents gave miscellaneous WHATFUTURETEACHERSARE READING? International Reseach Journal,November,2010 ISSN-0975-3486 RNI: RAJBIL 2009/300097 VOL-I *ISSUE 14 45RESEARCH ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION answers like to read letter to editors, to read poems, tosolvepuzzlesalltheseresponseswerecodedunder category Afternewspapersbooksweremuchpopular (21%)amongthestudents.itwasfoundoutthatB.Ed. studentsreadbookswhicharerecommendedbytheir teachers (27%) after that books are read which are suggested by friends (25%) and 22% students read the books which there in references of the course content and 16% students were observed reading the books which were reviewed by the newspaper. 8% respondents read the books which they saw at bookstallsorexhibition.Themostfavorite genreof book for reading was novel with 26% and the least favorite genre was poetry with just 5%. It was also found out that students prefer college library most for reading books than any other source.After books internet was the medium rated by the B.Ed. students (15%) and least favorite medium was magazines (11%)internetwaslessfavoritebecauseitwasanew technology which was yet to be explored by the respondentplustheavailabilitywasinfrequentwithin the college. In case of the magazines price and availability in the college library was the issue.Through this research it was found out that more than 50% of the students do discuss their reading with their friends every day. More than 60% B.Ed. students admitted that they don’t get enough time to read because of the busy schedule of B.Ed. When data for last objective i.e. are respondents readinganythingtopreparethemselvesforthefuture job, was analyzed. It was found out that 33% respondents were reading reference books about their subject, 28% respondents were reading educational magazines and education supplements in the newspaper. 21% respondents were reading books or magazines for general knowledge 12% respondents were reading biographies of famous people, which in turn inspire them. 1 Wanning Reading Habits?
