have​ ​an​ ​affinity​ ​for​ ​movies.​ ​Every​ ​year,​ ​as​ ​a​ ​hobby,​ ​I​ ​try​ ​to​ ​catch​ ​all​ ​the​ ​movies​ ​that​ ​received
academy​ ​award​ ​nominations​ ​in​ ​the​ ​top​ ​categories​ ​of​ ​Best​ ​Picture,​ ​Best​ ​Actor,​ ​and​ ​Best​ ​Actress.
Every​ ​once​ ​in​ ​awhile,​ ​a​ ​movie​ ​passes​ ​under​ ​my​ ​radar,​ ​and​ ​I​ ​have​ ​to​ ​revisit​ ​it​ ​long​ ​past​ ​the
award​ ​season.​ ​​ ​In​ ​this​ ​case,​ ​the​ ​little​ ​flick​ ​that​ ​I​ ​finally​ ​got​ ​around​ ​to​ ​seeing​ ​(over​ ​5​ ​years​ ​later)
is​ ​“​A​ ​Better​ ​Life​,”​ ​which​ ​was​ ​released​ ​in​ ​2011.​ ​This​ ​film​ ​featured​ ​Academy​ ​Award​ ​nominated
actor​ ​Damian​ ​Bichir​ ​as​ ​an​ ​illegal​ ​Mexican​ ​immigrant​ ​in​ ​Los​ ​Angeles​ ​whose​ ​sole​ ​purpose​ ​in​ ​life
is​ ​to​ ​create​ ​the​ ​opportunity​ ​for​ ​his​ ​son​ ​to​ ​live​ ​the​ ​life​ ​he​ ​could​ ​and​ ​never​ ​likely​ ​will​ ​have.​ ​At​ ​his
core​ ​is​ ​hard​ ​work​ ​and​ ​strong​ ​morals,​ ​which​ ​he​ ​tries​ ​to​ ​instill​ ​in​ ​his​ ​son​ ​over​ ​the​ ​crucial​ ​course
of​ ​a​ ​two​ ​week​ ​period​ ​when​ ​threats​ ​of​ ​gang​ ​membership​ ​and​ ​the​ ​loss​ ​of​ ​job​ ​opportunities

2. While​ ​this​ ​movie​ ​has​ ​illegal​ ​immigration​ ​as​ ​a​ ​core​ ​subject​ ​(the​ ​recent​ ​news​ ​regarding​ ​​DACA
makes​ ​this​ ​even​ ​more​ ​relevant),​ ​its​ ​true​ ​theme​ ​is​ ​more​ ​universal—how​ ​do​ ​we​ ​as​ ​parents,
family​ ​members​ ​and​ ​friends​ ​create​ ​an​ ​atmosphere​ ​of​ ​opportunity​ ​and​ ​growth​ ​for​ ​our​ ​children,
significant​ ​others,​ ​and​ ​those​ ​we​ ​care​ ​about​ ​when​ ​both​ ​internal​ ​and​ ​external​ ​factors,​ ​both
uncontrollable​ ​and​ ​unpredictable,​ ​threaten​ ​it​ ​on​ ​a​ ​daily​ ​basis?
To​ ​this​ ​there​ ​is​ ​no​ ​simple​ ​solution,​ ​none​ ​that​ ​I​ ​would​ ​dare​ ​to​ ​resolve​ ​in​ ​a​ ​little​ ​500​ ​word​ ​post.
Yet​ ​I​ ​still​ ​propose​ ​the​ ​answer​ ​falls​ ​within​ ​the​ ​following​ ​inquiry—what​ ​do​ ​we​ ​want​ ​our​ ​legacy​ ​to
be?
Now,​ ​when​ ​I​ ​use​ ​the​ ​term​ ​“legacy,”​ ​I’m​ ​thinking​ ​more​ ​in​ ​the​ ​realm​ ​of​ ​values,​ ​characteristics,
ethics,​ ​knowledge,​ ​and​ ​wealth​ ​that​ ​we​ ​wish​ ​to​ ​pass​ ​down​ ​to​ ​the​ ​younger​ ​generation.​ ​Are​ ​we
leaving​ ​the​ ​world​ ​in​ ​a​ ​better​ ​place​ ​than​ ​how​ ​we​ ​found​ ​it?​ ​What​ ​is​ ​our​ ​footprint?​ ​Did​ ​we​ ​do​ ​all
we​ ​could​ ​to​ ​create​ ​a​ ​path​ ​of​ ​possibilities​ ​for​ ​those​ ​we​ ​care​ ​for​ ​the​ ​most?
While​ ​there’s​ ​no​ ​guarantee​ ​we​ ​can​ ​provide​ ​the​ ​level​ ​of​ ​comfort​ ​for​ ​our​ ​children​ ​than​ ​we​ ​might
hope—in​ ​fact,​ ​it​ ​may​ ​seem​ ​more​ ​and​ ​more​ ​improbably​ ​these​ ​days​ ​with​ ​the​ ​diminishing​ ​middle
