3. Pre-Production: Visual Planning
• This section is concerned with the visual planning of your music video
• You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video,
establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and
create a structure for you to follow when filming
• It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you make it; it
will make filming and production a more streamlined process
• The following tasks are part of your visual planning

• Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
• Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
• Presents key moments in your video
• A means to sketch/plan ideas
• Information on colour/lighting
• Defining the “mise-en-scene”
• Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to

5. Location, shots and post production
For my music video, I am going to film in my local town. This will give my video
a sense of realism and allows the audience to relate. I will also film in quite
poor working class areas as this is stereotypically where the largest amount of
mistreated woman are based. This leads to the audience believing the message
of the video more therefore the message will be conveyed more effectively.
I will include a number of close shots when I go to focus on the main
characters. For example, the opening lyric of the song is “Said who's that girl
there”. For this line, I will do a close shot of a girl looking at the camera looking
depressed. This is so the audience know exactly who the lyrics are describing
and so that the tone of the song is displayed right at the start of the video. This
will then foreshadow the tone for the rest of the song. I will also include
different medium shots of different events that happen in the video. For
example, all the shots when the man is pushing around the girl. They will have
to be medium shots as the audience need to see everything that is happening.

6. Location, shots and post production
• The music video will be filmed in quite dim lighting as I want the
lighting and environment to portray the tone of the song. This will
increase the atmosphere that I want to displayed in the video. As well
as that, to convey the tone even more I will add different effects and
post production edits to the video. I will change the saturation to
make the video seem less vibrant and more negative. I may also
decrease the colour tones to make the video seem more depressing
and not as cheerful. I will add a depressing but cinematic effect as
want the video to look professional however, it cant look vibrant as
then the correct atmosphere wont be portrayed.

7. Structural breakdown
• Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse, chorus,
verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to each section
• You can use this as the master template for your production, then
add more shots to each section when you develop your full visual
plan

• Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video

15. Shot List
• Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you
need to shoot for your video – it is both a creative tool for planning
and practical tool for filming
• It should work in partnership with your storyboard
• It will be your working document when you film
• It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description,
framing and action you will see
• It should also have information on performers in the scene and other
props, etc

• Information and images of your location[s] for filming
• You should have address details, clearance/premissions for filming,
recce photos and floorplans [including camera, equipment and
cast/crew layouts]
• Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
• Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions

20. • For my music video, I have decided to film in lower class public. This
will include council estates, roadsides and bridges. I have access
these places as they are public places therefore everyone in the
community is open to use them.
• Specifically, I have planned to film in Sainsbury's car park and in a
small council estate in Selby. If these filming locations aren't possible
I will film in the leisure Centre cark park and choose another estate.
