An immigrant is a person who moves to another country and lives there.
a. They have to learn new customs, or ways of doing things.

When people move to new countries they sometimes become part of an ethnic group.
a. An ethnic group is a group of people who have the same culture.
b. People in the same ethnic group speak the same language, eat the same foods, and
follow the customs of their culture.
c. Being a part of an ethnic group can help immigrants adjust to their new home.

a. The first thing many immigrants saw when they came to America was the Statue of

Immigrants who came to the United States had to start a new way of life.
a. Some came through Ellis Island in New York Harbor, as well as other American
cities.
b. They had to learn a new language and find new homes and jobs.

Many immigrants wanted to become citizens of the United States.
a. Citizens help the community by voting.
b. They are expected to follow the law.

Children of immigrants went to school in the United States.
a. These schools were very different from the schools they left.
b. Children learn about the government of the United States and the way of life.
c. They learn to speak English and about Science and Math.

Immigrants brought the customs of their culture with them when they moved to
America.
a. People in America played games, sang songs, and ate foods that came from other
countries.
b. Cultures from different places started to blend with American customs.

At the same time immigrants were moving to America from other countries, people
were migrating in America.
a. The Great Migration was when African Americans moved from the Southern states
to the Northern States.
b. They were hoping to find a better life after slavery.
c. They looked for jobs in factories in New York, Chicago and Pittsburgh.
d. Just like immigrants from other countries, they brought their culture with them
and it blended with the culture of the Northern states.
