The early Israelites originated around 1000 BC in Canaan. They believed in one God and developed the religion of Judaism. God promised Abraham and his descendants the land of Canaan. Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt to Mount Sinai, where they received the Ten Commandments from God. After 40 years of wandering, they took control of Canaan under Joshua but later divided into two kingdoms. Judaism continued to develop during the Babylonian exile and Persian rule, including writing the Hebrew Bible. Under Roman rule, Jewish revolts led to the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in AD 70.
