• Define an element
• Describe what the periodic table is about.
7. So, what is an element?
An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any
simpler substance by ordinary chemical or physical means. The
smallest particle in an element which has the same properties of as
the element is an atom.
8. The Relationship between atoms and
Elements
An element is made up of one type of atom
The chemical properties of an element depend on the
arrangement of electrons in an atom.
The number of protons in an atom determines an
element’s physical properties.
Atoms have the same chemical makeup, size and mass
as their respective element.
9. • The Periodic table
• What is the Periodic Table?
• The periodic table is an arrangement of all the elements known to man in accordance with their
increasing atomic number and recurring chemical properties. They are assorted in a tabular
arrangement wherein a row is a period, and a column is a group.
A ROW IS A PERIOD
A Column is a group
13. ATOMICAND MASS NUMBER OF
ELEMENTS
• Atomic number
• The number of protons in atom is known as the atomic number, with symbol Z. The atomic number is unique to a
particular element, that means no two elements in the world can have the same atomic number.
• Eg: element calcium has atomic number 20, hence 20 protons. In an atom, the number of electrons will be equal to
the atomic number. How many electrons?
• MASS NUMBER
• THE NUMBER OF PROTONS AND NEUTRONS IS A KNOWN AS THE MASS NUMBER, WITH SYMBOL A. THE NUMBER OF
NEUTRONS CAN BE CALCULATED BY SUBTRACTING THE ATOMIC NUMBER FROM THE MASS NUMBER THAT IS A- Z.
