Tuyamuyun hydroelectric complex (Turkmenistan – Uzbekistan)
Timeline: April 2021 – January 2022
Status: Launched
Objective: promote regional water-energy cooperation at facility level with
accent made on sedimentation at Ruslovoye water reservoir:
Tasks:
1. Assess the amount of sedimentation in the Ruslovoye reservoir in the main area of 373 km2;
2. Make a forecast of the expected increase in the amount of sedimentation of the Ruslovoye reservoir over the next 50
years;
3. Estimate of the current annual loss of active reservoir volume and its forecast for the next decade under the BAU
scenario;
4. Assess impact of sedimentation on the distribution of water resources for the energy and irrigation needs of
Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan;
5. Develop technical recommendations on cost-effective technical solutions and innovative technical measures at
mitigating the silting process.

Forestation of the dried bottom of Aral Sea: piloting the closed root system (Kazakhstan)
Timeline: November 2020 – December 2021
Status: Launched
Objective: to support the afforestation on the dried bottom of the Aral Sea
through piloting the growth of black saxaul seedlings in a closed-root system
and deduce its survival rate.
Tasks:
1. Construction of saxaul nurseries for 2 000 saxaul seedling under the closed root system (in Aralsk, Kyzylorda Oblast);
2. Planting the saxaul seedlings in the Aralkum dessert;
3. Monitoring of the survival rate and estimation of the water-energy-food resources under open root system vs. closed.

system of electricity consumption in the Sughd Province of Tajikistan:
Tasks:
1. Institutional and legislative framework on operation of the pumping stations in
Tajikistan;
2. Technical diagnostic of 173 pumping stations in Sughd Province, Tajikistan;
3. Development of a concept for an automated control and monitoring system for
electricity consumption in 173 pumping stations in the Sughd Province;
4. Preparation of the investment proporal for the modernization of the Golodno
Stepsakaya Pumping Station using energy-saving technologies.

Phase II: Potential areas for cooperation

1. Application of the Nexus approach through demonstration projects:
- Conduction of the CBA, trade-off analysis at the sites;
- Conduction of the modelling exercises at the site;
- Estimation of the WEF resources allocation at the facility level and how
to make it more efficient under the Nexus approach.
2. Introduction of the Nexus approach through institualization:
- Identification of institualization type and modes;
- Recommendations on institualization through the state white papers;
- Institualization through the capacity enhancement.
3. Outreach and enhancement of the Nexus approach:
- Capacity building exercises (training modules, experience exchange through cases);
- Sample curricula for the academia;
- Policy papers.
4. Financing the multisectoral projects:
- Study the experience on the financial modes for the investment of the Nexus projects;
- Identify the difference between the investment for Nexus vs. non Nexus projects;
- Produce the list of the pipeline investment projects, applicable for Nexus title/component.
