■ What common features do the researched products have?
– Most, if not all of my researched products have heavy aspects of audio.This is because I made
a heavy emphasis on researching audio based products.The most prevalent common theme
running throughout all researched products are bright, flashy covers/icons. Whatever is
shown on the cover/icon links into the content of the book, audio or movie.This features
things like a protagonist, a location or an object.There is also the comparison of book to
movie to audiobook covers, where they all have a similar theme or layout to each other.The
“Percy Jackson” books by Rick Riordan are a good example of this.The book was written and
the official art was made before the movie came out, but it’s obvious how much cover art
influenced the DVD jacket. And the audiobook icon clearly uses the same art as the book
cover.
■ What aspects of the research will you include within your own production work?
– I intend to include the similarity of book cover to audiobook icon, to link the two pieces
together.When researching audiobooks, I examined the writing style and the words used. I
will be using similar descriptive techniques in the few chapters I write for my product. Unlike
the audiobook and closer to the Podcast I researched, I will be adding sound effects and
possibly an intro song. I’m not very good at making music so the intro jingle is dependant on
whether I can figure out how to use Garage Band or not.The advertising I researched helped
me understand the conventions of a book poster.This means that I can fully make a book
poster with confidence that I will be following the genre conventions.

■ According to this blog post, audiobook sales have more than
doubled within the last year.This suggests that audiences are
getting more interested in audiobooks.This is good for me as I
have been planning to make an audiobook

■ Audiobooks, as of March 11 2019, make up 5% of all book sales.
This is a growth of 3% from previous years.This implies that the
audiobook market is growing steadily.To appeal to this broad
of an audience, I will have to have good advertising.

Based on this statistic, I would suggest that the 47%
listen to audiobooks on smartphones.To appeal to
that audience, I will target advertising towards a
younger demographic using things such as buzzwords
and imagery like guns and hegemonic male
characters.

female respondents stated they had listened to at least one audiobook in the

Interviews■ Would a dark, gloomy and mysterious book cover entice you into buying a supernatural crime thriller?
Why? If not, why?
– Yes, I want a cover that fits the theme of the book, and I generally look for interesting covers.
Something dark and forboding on the cover will share the same feeling as when it's written down.
■ What kind of sounds do you associate with a forest set in a horror movie?Why?
– The sound of twigs snapping can make people feel like they're not alone. Other sounds could be the
sound of wind and leaves rustling can also add to this effect, but in suspenseful situations I tend to
think that less is more. Perhaps quiet crickets that fade out when things get tense.
■ What do you expect to see on a poster advertising a book, like on you'd see at a train station?Why?
– The book should be displayed on the poster, which should have similar colours to the cover. Big bold
fonts to catch attention, as well as the price and where you can buy the book. Maybe even one or two
reviews about the bok to really sell it.
■ Finally, do you think a fictional North American town surrounded by forest in winter works as a setting
for a supernatural crime book?
– Yes, and no.There's a lot of folklore that originates from native history which could help fuel the
story. And being trapped in a town far away from all other civilisation does help enhanse the
suspenseful situation. However, a small town isn't likely to bethe target of investigators, and
depending on the poplation having crimes take place hee could be overwhelming.

– I think that if the front cover is enticing enough with it's mysterious and
gloomy vibes, I may buy the book, yes.
■ What kind of sounds do you associate with a forest set in a horror movie?
Why?
– I imagine owls hooting, possibly bats squeaking and twigs breaking.
Maybe even wind whistling through the trees.
■ What do you expect to see on a poster advertising a book, like on you'd see at
a train station?Why?
– A picture of the book itself, stood on a background.There'd be a
recommendation from a newspaper/critic by the side.
■ Finally, do you think a fictional North American town surrounded by forest in
winter works as a setting for a supernatural crime book?
– I think that it would be a perfect setting indeed.

ResearchAnalysis ■ What common features do the researched products have? – Most, if not all of my researched products have heavy aspects of audio.This is because I made a heavy emphasis on researching audio based products.The most prevalent common theme running throughout all researched products are bright, flashy covers/icons. Whatever is shown on the cover/icon links into the content of the book, audio or movie.This features things like a protagonist, a location or an object.There is also the comparison of book to movie to audiobook covers, where they all have a similar theme or layout to each other.The “Percy Jackson” books by Rick Riordan are a good example of this.The book was written and the official art was made before the movie came out, but it’s obvious how much cover art influenced the DVD jacket. And the audiobook icon clearly uses the same art as the book cover. ■ What aspects of the research will you include within your own production work? – I intend to include the similarity of book cover to audiobook icon, to link the two pieces together.When researching audiobooks, I examined the writing style and the words used. I will be using similar descriptive techniques in the few chapters I write for my product. Unlike the audiobook and closer to the Podcast I researched, I will be adding sound effects and possibly an intro song. I’m not very good at making music so the intro jingle is dependant on whether I can figure out how to use Garage Band or not.The advertising I researched helped me understand the conventions of a book poster.This means that I can fully make a book poster with confidence that I will be following the genre conventions.

If not, why? – Yes, I want a cover that fits the theme of the book, and I generally look for interesting covers. Something dark and forboding on the cover will share the same feeling as when it's written down. ■ What kind of sounds do you associate with a forest set in a horror movie?Why? – The sound of twigs snapping can make people feel like they're not alone. Other sounds could be the sound of wind and leaves rustling can also add to this effect, but in suspenseful situations I tend to think that less is more. Perhaps quiet crickets that fade out when things get tense. ■ What do you expect to see on a poster advertising a book, like on you'd see at a train station?Why? – The book should be displayed on the poster, which should have similar colours to the cover. Big bold fonts to catch attention, as well as the price and where you can buy the book. Maybe even one or two reviews about the bok to really sell it. ■ Finally, do you think a fictional North American town surrounded by forest in winter works as a setting for a supernatural crime book? – Yes, and no.There's a lot of folklore that originates from native history which could help fuel the story. And being trapped in a town far away from all other civilisation does help enhanse the suspenseful situation. However, a small town isn't likely to bethe target of investigators, and depending on the poplation having crimes take place hee could be overwhelming.

Why? – I imagine owls hooting, possibly bats squeaking and twigs breaking. Maybe even wind whistling through the trees. ■ What do you expect to see on a poster advertising a book, like on you'd see at a train station?Why? – A picture of the book itself, stood on a background.There'd be a recommendation from a newspaper/critic by the side. ■ Finally, do you think a fictional North American town surrounded by forest in winter works as a setting for a supernatural crime book? – I think that it would be a perfect setting indeed.
