4 A story has three elements. Setting, Character and Plot are elements of a Story. The setting tells about the time and the place where the story happened. The character tells about the important person or persons in the story. The Plot tells about the events in the story. It includes problems the character faces in the story and the resolution of the problem. Plot Map Activity 2 Read the following sentences from the selection “The Pet” A. 6 Activity 4 – A Read the story. Answer the following questions. 1. Who is coming home? Read and Learn! Waiting for Sally (By: Nelia D. Bamba) “Sally is coming home today!” said mother. “We should go to the bus terminal to welcome her.” Father and Ben went along. Sally will surely have heavy baggage. Aunt Rosa stayed back home to prepare Sally’s favorite buko shake and bibingka. “How exciting, mother! After two long months of work, she is coming home,” said Ben. “I wonder what she bought for me.” At the terminal, Father asked, “Buses have come and gone. Where is Sally?” “The sun is now starting to set. Let’s wait for the next bus. Sally might already be in it, “mother said with a worried voice. Holding back tears from his eyes, Ben said, “Mother, I’m sure she’s on the next bus. Don’t worry.” “Here is the last bus from the city!” said father. “Let’s hope Sally is in it.” As the door of the bus opened, Sally ran to her family with smile on her lips and shouting “Mother, father, at last, I’m here!” “You have made everybody worried,” said father. “I’m sorry but traffic was long,” said Sally. Father and Ben helped Sally with her bags. Sally carried the extra bag. “Ben, I bought you three new t-shirts and a back pack,” said Sally. “Thank you,” said Ben. “But what is more important is we’re together again.”

Remember!  Nouns can be divided into two groups: COUNT nouns and MASS nouns.  Nouns can be counted are called “count nouns.” The plural forms of these nouns are usually made by adding an “s” to the singular forms. 16 The Plot is an element of the story. It is made up of the problem and its solution. The problem tells a situation that the character of the story faces. The solution tells how the character faced the solution and solved it. Maria asked him what his mother was doing. Rolly smiled and answered, “She is cooking lunch. I need to buy her a pack of salt.” Leaving the store, Rolly thanked Aling Maria for helping him remember. What is Rolly’s problem? How was he able to solve his problem? What do you call the part of the story that tells character’s problem and how he/she solved it? Activity 8: Read the short story below. Try to find the problem in the story, and its solution. Paragraph A Jenny and Joyce visited grandfather’s farm. “I really love this place,” said Jenny “The trees are amazing!” said Joyce. “They’re full of fruits. Let’s go to my favorite tree,” she added. “It has lots of fruits in it! 20 Events in poems and stories happen in a certain order. When we sequence events, we arrange them according to the order they happened in a story or poem. Activity 2 The sentences from the story are in the wrong order. Copy and then arrange the sentences according to the correct sequence of events. Do this in a separate sheet of paper. A concrete noun is a noun which names something that can be touched, seen, or experienced using the senses. An abstract noun names an idea, a thought or a feeling which cannot be touched, seen or experienced using the senses.

Bamba) “Sally is coming home today!” said mother. “We should go to the bus terminal to welcome her.” Father and Ben went along. Sally will surely have heavy baggage. Aunt Rosa stayed back home to prepare Sally’s favorite buko shake and bibingka. “How exciting, mother! After two long months of work, she is coming home,” said Ben. “I wonder what she bought for me.” At the terminal, Father asked, “Buses have come and gone. Where is Sally?” “The sun is now starting to set. Let’s wait for the next bus. Sally might already be in it, “mother said with a worried voice. Holding back tears from his eyes, Ben said, “Mother, I’m sure she’s on the next bus. Don’t worry.” “Here is the last bus from the city!” said father. “Let’s hope Sally is in it.” As the door of the bus opened, Sally ran to her family with smile on her lips and shouting “Mother, father, at last, I’m here!” “You have made everybody worried,” said father. “I’m sorry but traffic was long,” said Sally. Father and Ben helped Sally with her bags. Sally carried the extra bag. “Ben, I bought you three new t-shirts and a back pack,” said Sally. “Thank you,” said Ben. “But what is more important is we’re together again.”

Remember!  Nouns can be divided into two groups: COUNT nouns and MASS nouns.  Nouns can be counted are called “count nouns.” The plural forms of these nouns are usually made by adding an “s” to the singular forms.
