Melbourne was founded in 1835 when settlers landed on the Yarra River and became the capital of Victoria in 1851. It grew rapidly during the 1850s gold rush, increasing its population fourfold and surpassing Sydney to become Australia's largest city. Melbourne Day on August 30th celebrates the founding of the city by the group led by Captain John Lancey who established the first settlement on the Yarra River in 1835.
