- Aborigines were the first settlers in Australia around 40,000 years ago, living nomadic lifestyles in small family groups as hunters and gatherers with strong spiritual beliefs. - The British established Australia as a penal colony in 1788 after arriving, shipping prisoners there due to overcrowded jails, and conflict arose as they encroached on Aborigine lands. - More than half of indigenous Australians died from violence and introduced diseases by the late 1800s as Europeans seized their lands, and the remaining people were forced onto reservations with many laws aimed at destroying their culture.
