Dialectical Behavior Therapy And Mindfulness Essay
Dialectical Behavior Therapy Mindfulness Mindfulness is another way of meditation. Meditation was
used to seek to improve one s psychological or physical health, or spiritual growth. (Brantley, 2007).
The history of Mindfulness comes from Buddhism and his search for enlightenment and a foundation
of the four noble truths. The Buddha teaching focus on the four noble truths which consist of knowing
suffering exists, there is a cause of suffering, there is cessation of suffering and there is a path that
leads to the cessation of suffering. (Van Gordon, 2015). The four noble truths were not only there to
represent the Buddha s experiential understanding of suffering, but also to express the truth (Van
Gordon, 2015). Studies of Buddhism and the Four Noble Truths teach us that there is always going to
be suffering in our life but to find ways to overcome suffering (Tsering, 2005). Over the years
Mindfulness has been a way to treat a variety of health related conditions anywhere form stress,
anxiety and even cancer (M.Orsillo, 2010). Practicing mindfulness does not relate directly to any
specific faith or religious beliefs. Mindfulness inside the practice of social work was implemented to
help those with suicidal thoughts and borderline personality disorder. DBT teaches individuals the
skill to not be judgmental. Being non judgmental can be a difficult skill these days because we were
raised or taught to have different thoughts and points of views (Brantley, 2007).

Rohit Khurana Brophy College Preparatory Summer Reading Assignment 7/3/15 ST. IGNATIUS OF
LOYOLA Definitions 1. Battle of Pamplona The Battle of Pamplona was a struggle between French
backed Navarrese troops and Spanish troops, occurring during the Spanish conquest of Navarre. In
1512, most Navarrese towns consented to be under French rule. Before an agreement could be signed
however, King Ferdinand of Spain seized the capital, Pamplona, fortifying its walls, and claimed all of
Navarre for Spain. Later on, in 1521, Francis I, King of France reconquered Pamplona, with their
victory short lived as Spain would reconquer the province. It was during this battle in which St.

Ignatius of Loyola Ignatius of Loyola, born to Doña Marína Sánchez de Licona and Beltrán de Onáz
in 1491, created a legacy much bigger than himself by founding the Society of Jesus. Serving to the
treasurer s household (Velázquez) at first, Ignatius injuries during the Battle of Pamplona fueled a
period of reflection in which Ignatius placed his life at the feet of God. Traveling to Manresa after his
recovery, Ignatius created the Spiritual Exercises to help others grow closer to God setting the stage
for a new religious order. Pursuing this path, Ignatius received a well rounded education from the
University of Paris, attracting new followers, such as Peter Favre and Francis Xavier, and making
plans to travel to the Holy Land. However, these plans were curtailed in the shadow of conflict at the
Holy Land. Instead, the companions decided it was time to place themselves at the service of the Holy
Father by means of the Society of Jesus with Ignatius delivering his first mass on Christmas Eve, 1538
in the Chapel of the Manger in Rome s Basilica of St. Mary Major, 18 months after his ordination into

Compare And Contrast Ancient Egypt And India
It s 1500 BC and you are face to face with your enemy in battle. Its Egypt versus India. You are a
soldier in each of these civilizations, who will survive, you or him? What will you use to make sure it
is you? Will it be a cudgel from Ancient Egypt or maybe a throwing stick? Maybe it will be a bow and
arrow from Ancient India or a sword made with Damascus steel. In the next paragraphs I will
introduce you to the weapons used during battle in Ancient Egypt and Ancient India. I will show you
the similarities and the differences between the two ancient civilizations and which one had better
weapons. Both civilizations used bows and arrows as their main weapon. They also used swords,
daggers, battle axes, and maces. Chariots were used by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
India s weapons were often influenced by their religion. I think the ancient indian weaponry was
better. One of my reasons that I think that Ancient India is better is because their weaponry was more
advanced than Ancient Egypt. Egypt s weapons were made mostly of wood and stone and were very
basic compared to India s weaponry which was made of the finest metals and most expensive metals
like gold and bronze. India also put expensive jewels on their weaponry. Egypt was a very peaceful
farming civilization until they were invaded by the Hyksos. Once they were invaded they had to
modify their weapons and often copied their enemies weaponry. Their weaponry was not their own
creation it was often copied from other civilizations. India had a strong history of warfare. They
fought among their own groups as well as with other civilizations. They were advanced with their
weaponry because they needed to constantly improve it because they were always at war. They created
the damascus sword which was the strongest and sharpest metal available back then. Other
civilizations imported damascus metal to make their own weapons. India also used elephants covered
in armor in battle which no other civilization used. Using an elephant covered in armor in warfare was
like using a tank in today s modern warfare. Egypt did not have anything close to India s elephants.
They used very basic chariots that they copied from the Hyksos. So now you have all that information,

Greek Religion And The Greek Culture
When exploring each of the specific elements that make up the Greek culture, one can see that their
history of religion is vast. To understand the religious practices of the Ancient Greeks, we must first
begin to examine the cultural practices. I will be describing Greek religion as it was practiced in the
Archaic and Classical Period, which ranged around 800 B.C. to 323 B.C. When discussing the
Classical Period we enter the realm of polytheism which has no attachment to church or body of
dogma. Although the Greeks believed in multiple gods, there was no denying that the conduct of the
gods was not all acceptable to Greek thought. The Greeks kept mythological stories of the gods at
heart, but relied on having the ability to think rationally, or have human reason. This was the Greek
way and it was their idea of rational thinking. When it came to living, the primary aim of Greek life is
health and goodness. In order to gain this, they had to have religious sacrifices. I would like to discuss
these religious practices of Ancient Greek worship, sacrifice, holidays and burials because it is
important to learn about and from one of the greatest cultures in history. When discussing the Ancient
Greeks, it is essential to review beliefs in the major gods who have inspired these religious practices.
Gods such as Poseidon, Zeus and Apollo, who each lived on Mount Olympus, were omnipotent
beings. Since gods had the authority over the Greeks, it was necessary to

A Bloody Review Of Dracula By Bram Stoker
A Bloody Review of Dracula been taken away and the new richness is not yet ours.
The dark night of the soul is when you have lost the flavor of life but have not yet gained the fullness
of divinity. So it is that we must weather that dark time, the period of transformation when what is
familiar has been taken away and the new richness is not yet ours. (Loss of Meaning). This quote by
Ram Dass may be used to describe Dracula and its suspenseful, powerful, and blood sucking
components but can also be used to describe the author Bram Stoker and the character s outlook on
life. Jonathan Harker, the protagonist of the beginning of the story, travels to Transylvania. He finds

In the novel, Count Dracula is prejudice about the West, and how it affects the Eastern beliefs. When
studying Dracula, the reader can see that the novel was written under Western eyes (N, Janusz). In the
novel, Jonathan describes his transition to Transylvania by saying, the impression I had was of leaving
the west and entering the East. (Stoker, 9). Here, Stoker presents the overall conflict between the east
and the west. Dracula pictures the east, with his evil characteristics, and the hunting crew of Jonathan,
Mina and the others as the west. Dracula expresses his support for England by telling Mina of his past;
Whilst they played wits against me against me who commanded nations, and intrigued for them, and
fought for them, hundreds of years before they were born I was countermining them. (Stoker, 259). In
the novel, Dracula is known to be a proud supporter of England who was once the powerhouse of the
west. England was known for fighting against the Turks, who once tried to take over the land of the
English. Victorian England hated traitors like Dracula because of how he turned his back on his once
beloved Western England (Tensions Between East West in Bram Stoker s Dracula). Dracula uses this
method as an act of pity to Mina, saying he once fought for them before they were even brought to this
earth so

Tupac All Eyez On Me Analysis
Dark background, white letters, west coast sign, and death row records. Will I survive? Will I die?
Come on, let s picture the possibility , a line rapped on the track All Eyez On Me by Tupac on his
album ranked number two of 16 which was named All Eyez On Me like track number 24 of this
album. Solo rapper, Tupac Amaru Shakur, born June 16, 1971, faced many brutally physical, mental
and social altercations from being the son of a black panther to being an upcoming rap mogul. Before
physically listening to the album one glances at the cover and title there could be a preconceived
notion that the songs will be based on the East v. West Coast rivalry (that was happening during this
decade), strictly about Tupac, or maybe even sex with just one heartfelt song; but he took a different
approach. This album covers the trials, societal struggles, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While covering everything previously stated this album poses a different question(s), offers a new
story, or gives a new outlook on a situation. In 1995, Shakur was arrested for sexual assault charges;
however the charges that were brought about had nothing to do with Shakur. Nevertheless, the woman
still sued and Tupac was imprisoned because of this scandal. Due to this to case he wrote track number
three on the album entitled Skandalouz . The beginning of this track was brought in by a roll on a hi
hat that crescendos to a hard bass with a soft piano playing an octave which created a balance. During
this song he implicitly states how she s so scandalous using analogies and references to real life
situations where a woman would date men twice her age just for money therefore becoming what he
defines as scandalous. An example of such a situation would be like the popular television series

The Hymns In Francis Jane Crosby s Life
Francis Jane Crosby, born in Southeast, Putnam County, New York, on 24 March 1820 and passed
away on 12 February 1915, a month shy of her 95th birthday. She is famously known for writing
hymns, she wrote more than 9,000 hymns, and some are still sung to this day. Due to the number of
hymns she wrote, she had to create an alias to avoid having the hymnals being dominated by her
name. Fanny Crosby was able to serve the Lord by writing songs of praise to Him, all this in spite of
her blindness

of hers, who seemed to be close to her death, asked her, Will you meet me in heaven? even though her

the most. It was when she and her companions began to sing the hymn At the Cross , did she give her
life to God. After this, she joined the Old John Street Methodist church.
Fanny collaborated with many musicians to put song into her poems. Musicians would come to Fanny
with a song and ask her to give them words. To Reverend Robert Lowry s music, she wrote a well
known hymn All the Way my Saviour Leads Me . Fanny collaborated with Mrs E. L. Knapp twice and
wrote, Nearer the Cross, my Heart can say and Blessed Assurance . When visiting a mission in the
slums of New York, she became sympathetic and felt saddened, this event encouraged her to write the
hymn Rescue the Perishing .

Downsize In The Workplace Case Study
You must develop a plan to downsize 15% of your employee population. Identify the steps you must
take.
The first step to take in planning for a downsize in an organization is letting all temporary employees
go and then move on to the regular part time employees. This is the logical and fair way to handle
inevitable layoffs. It is unfortunate for the individuals affected, however, this I the most reasonable
way to handle this issue. Next step would be to ask for any volunteers and advise there will be an
incentive involved. This can include severance pay for a specific amount of time to include

What federal, state, regulatory guidelines must be considered when downsizing?
A determination should be made if the WARN Act applies to the organization and if it does, then
adhering to the guidelines set forth in the act. This is the Worker Adjustment and Retraining
Notification Act, enacted in 1988, requiring employers to provide a 60 days notice if they employ 100
or more employees. There are exceptions and circumstances to this act in which the employer should
have knowledge of as well. When the WARN Act is instated for an organization, the representatives of
the employees are required to be informed in a timely manner. Consequently, the state or designated
entity by the state and the chief elected official of the local government where the plant closing or
mass layoff is occurring are required to be informed in a timely manner as well (Managing
Downsizing by Means of Layoffs, 2015).
The equal employment opportunity laws are to be obeyed by the organization. Some of these laws
include the ADEA (Age Discrimination in Employment Act) and the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act
of 1964. Each state has law charts that include laws that employers are held accountable to. It is
always beneficial for the organization to obtain legal counsel to ensure that they are following the laws

By slipping it into our food without our knowledge, without any indication that there are genetically
modified organisms in our food, we are now unwittingly part of a massive experiment says journalist
Arjun Walia (Walia). GMOs need to be labeled, for it is the consumers health at risk while the farming
companies focus solely on the cost efficient qualities and profit of their dangerous products, not to
mention their ethical violation of nature. GMOs are considered to be as safe as their traditional
counterparts according to the FDA and are generally regulated (U.S. Food and Drug Administration),
the FDA does not refer to this category of foods as GMOs, but rather as GEs, genetically engineered.
Perhaps their reluctance to use the term GMO is intentional and to disassociate the products with the
infamous negative connotations. The following quote is from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
website, according to the section of their website titled Views on GE Foods , the FDA has a seemingly
very neutral stance regarding the manufacturing and market of said products: While FDA regulates
foods and ingredients, including foods made from GE plants, the agency neither supports GE plants
based on their perceived benefits nor opposes them based on their perceived risks. FDA s priority is to
ensure that all foods, including those derived from GE

In the gambling world bets are made based on odds, the probability or likelihood that something
would happen. In the court of law, cases are decided upon by the weight of evidence presented by the
respective parties. The common link between these general scenarios is that decisions are made based
on some outside evidential factor. The more probable something is likely to happen, or the more
evidence presented in favor or opposed to something, the greater the tendency that a decision will
coincide with that probability or evidence. This kind of logic has also been used when arguing about

Pascal starts off his essay by stating that, If there is a God, He is infinitely incomprehensible...He has
no affinity to us. (Pascal, 78) This already poses a problem with the argument he is about to present in
support of believing that God exists. The main question becomes, if there is a god and that this god is
incomprehensible, then what is the point in believing whether or not such a being a actually exists? It
would obviously follow that we would never come to a full understanding of this god, and any efforts
to believe in or worship him would be in vain. Are we just to believe that this god exists and that s all,
or is there a code of conduct that is to follow this belief? How do you act in a manner that is pleasing
to being that you do not and never will wholly understand? Pascal goes on to state that once we have
made this rational decision to believe in God then we start to act like we believe in this god and from
practicing these actions habitually your belief will strengthen Pascal, 78). The problem here lies in the
basis of the strength for this belief. To make a decision and then act on that decision seems pretty
consistent; but, to make a decision and have that decision become a belief based on habitual actions
does not follow at all. Is this belief that your holding to a product of sincerity of habit? If you start to

person, but also has an impact on the surrounding people and environment.
C. Today, I d like to talk to you about how banning smoking in public can lead to less secondhand
smoking and health effects, causing fewer environmental issues, and finally, supporting smokers in
giving up smoking.
(Transition into body of speech): I ll begin by telling you how non smokers are at risk by being around
smokers.
II. BODY
A. People who do not smoke, yet are around others who smoke, are in danger of secondhand smoking.
Since I have asthma, I can relate to people with breathing related conditions, who are at a greater
danger of secondhand smoking, which can cause severe outcomes.
According to the state of Michigan, secondhand smoke can trigger asthma attack, bronchial infections,
and other severe health problems in nonsmokers.
Children with asthma around secondhand smoke have more severe and frequent asthma attacks, which
can put a child s life in danger.
Even for people without breathing conditions, breathing secondhand smoke for a brief period can be
deadly.
The Centers for Disease Control s warned that breathing drifting tobacco smoke for as little as 30
minutes can raise a non smoker s risk of suffering a fatal heart attack to that of a smoker.
Since 1964, over 2.5 million nonsmoker adults passed away due to secondhand smoke.
Secondhand smoke increases risks of certain diseases, such as heart disease and lung cancer.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, secondhand smoke causes over 34,000
premature deaths from heart disease per year in the U.S. among nonsmokers.
Nonsmokers exposed to smoking increase their risk of heart disease by 25 30%.
Even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can damage the lining of blood vessels and cause blood
platelets to become stickier,

A Brief Note On Diamond Blackfan Anemia ( Dba ) Is A Rare...
Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a rare genetic disease that causes defects in the ribosomal
structure (Farber, 2016). The disease stems from a decrease in the production of erythroid precursors
in the bone marrow, which results in an extremely low red blood cell count. Due to the reduction in
the production of erythrocytes, most individuals diagnosed with this disease develop an array of issues
that can be life threatening such as a predisposition to cancer and bone marrow failure. Within the first
year of life, most symptoms of DBA will appear in most individuals (Ellis, 2014). The importance of
understanding the genetics of DBA remains a priority in reducing the number of infants affected by a
detrimental hereditary blood disorder.
After the first description of DBA by Josephs, the disease was further studied and analyzed by Louis
Diamond and Kenneth Blackfan in 1938 (Anupama Narla, 2011). Since Diamond and Blackfan
discovered a lot of information on the disease through research, the disease was named after both
doctors. Most of the families affected by DBA appear to pass the genetic mutation in a dominant
manner. Though several genes have been identified in the development of DBA, mutations in the
RPS19 gene has been linked to more cases of DBA. The RPS19 gene helps to produce certain
ribosomal factors that are used in ribonucleic acid processing. Ribosomes are responsible for
producing proteins on a cellular level. This mutation leads to the inability of

A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur s Court
Even though the setting of both works, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court by Mark Twain
and The Crucible by Arthur Miller, are written in a time period different from their publication, both
works use characters in their novels as a critique of the author s societies. Twain uses his satirical
work to make fun of both the Northern and Southern, but does not make any direct comparisons
between the characters of his novel to real life figures. On the other hand, the characters in Miller s
novel are more directly correlated to specific people and groups during the Second Red Scare.
Even though both novels use certain characters to criticize negative aspects of the author s society, the

During the Second Red Scare the Hollywood Ten were a group of ten actors, directors, and producers
who according to Senator Joseph Mccarthy had communist ties and were trying to spread Soviet
Propaganda through American society by way of media. Even though these actors may have had slight
ties to communism Miller believed that they did not deserve to be blacklisted from all of media after
the trials. Miller uses John Proctor, the protagonist of his novel, to show the unfairness of these trials.
Proctor, while not perfect, was the most sane and righteous man in the town of Salem during the
events of the novel, but he still was put in jail for a crime that Miller believed would be minor in the
eyes of his audiences. Proctor committed adultery, but did not commit any crimes that would have
been generous to Miller s audiences. Even for this slight crime Proctor was put to death by the judges
of Salem. This is in comparison to the treatment of the Hollywood Ten by Mccarthy and Congress
during the Second Red Scare, where there crimes were slight, but they were put to death anyway due
to a power trip by a a few people in power. This direct comparison between Proctor and the
Hollywood Ten allowed Miller to make the Hollywood Ten seem more innocent and worthy of trust.
His use of unfair treatment against Proctor also made it seem to the audiences that Mccarthy and his

Evidence Integrity And Evidence Continuity Essay
Evidence Integrity and Evidence Continuity
Introduction
The foundation of all Forensic practice is in practicing, maintaining and protecting integrity and
continuity of evidence as it establishes credibility and reliability in court and makes certain that any
fabrication, misunderstanding, bias s or even mistakes, have not occurred.
Defining Evidence Integrity and Evidence Continuity
Evidence integrity demonstrates that evidence has been handled correctly, honestly and responsibly.
Therefore, evidence integrity is the protection of potential evidence from the perception of evidence
being lost, substituted, contaminated, deteriorated or tempered with to ensure its prevented from being

Case Study Of Avon s Global Marketing
Avon faces challenges in expanding and sustaining its global manufacturing and supply chain because
of the need to develop customized products for its different geographical markets. Establishing
presence in new markets with different cultural orientations is also not easy and there is need for
different marketing strategies. Typical of global marketing, Avon has to be aware of the different rules
and regulations imposed by all its different markets prior to doing business (Daniels, Radebaugh and
Sullivan, 2010).
The major concern when evaluating new suppliers for Avon would be their reliability in ensuring that
materials are provided in time, in the right quantity and cost, and expected quality, as well as their
knowledge of the market. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Word of mouth from previous customers helps to introduce the products to others friends, families, or
social groups. Also, selling in global markets with less competition has promoted Avon s competitive
advantage. Global branding enables Avon to gain loyal customers that are proud to associate with the
company s international brand. Customizing products, prices and language to meet local needs enables
customers to consider their needs fulfilled, further promoting Avon s brand loyalty. Use of celebrities
such as Salma Hayek in marketing enables Avon to have more customers that like to emulate the
celebrity. Avon s production, market penetration and distribution strategy enables it to sell to a wider
market while having minimized costs of production, which is good for profits. A global recession has
no significant negative impact on Avon especially if the company keeps using the Avon ladies
distribution system. The economic recession of 2008 saw Avon s independent sellers increase in
number (Avon Case Study). The advantage of independent sellers is that they can penetrate to remote
locations regardless of problems such as failing infrastructure. Furthermore, transitional economies in
which Avon mainly operates have different economic policies that support industrial growth despite

Leap Of The Brethren Pantry Summary
Least of the Brethren is a local food pantry in Pinkneyville, it is where I am choosing to plunge for my
assignment. I am choosing this culture because of the high number of low socioeconomic students that
attend school in our area. I feel it is important to understand the needs in our area in order to connect
with future students and their families. To be very honest, I know there is a great need for support in
our area. However, I assume the families that need this support also receive government assistance
through programs such as WIC and Link. Plunging into this culture I hope to gain a better
understanding of why pantries are still needed and how I can become more active in addressing the
need locally. With the knowledge I hope to gain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the break the volunteers asked us several questions. From what I gathered all of the volunteers
also need the assistance of the pantry. Many asked us how they could help us, assuming we had fallen
on hard times. I assured them they we were just there to help them and donate our time. Volunteers
receive each goods in their boxes in return for their help.
Application of Plunge Experience Prior to taking the plunge I was not aware that even with
government programs there is still a need for pantries in our local area. This brings a very large
challenge to my educational environment. I will need to find out which students will require this need
to be addressed. As a classroom teacher, I will need to bring awareness to the students that do not have
this need that a part of their role in our community is to help those in need. This can be done through
volunteering and donations.
The challenge that individuals from the group will bring to the education environment is one that
directly impact their learning. It is well understood that children cannot learn until their most basic
needs are met. Yes, we offer free breakfast to students, but many arrive too late to receive this service
and often one muffin is not enough to address their hunger. This plunge made me aware of the
challenges many students will face in my

The Progression Of Intellectual Development
The progression of intellectual development gives us a guide for which to judge the relative merits of
historical ideas. This process proves to be critical in our interpretation of the past. If the ideas of today
are the successors to our intellectual heritage, then by its virtues they determine how we construe
history. In this regard we look back upon Aristotle. By modern standards this famous Greek
philosopher is lionized as a transformative scholar. Our adoration for Aristotle then must be derived
from how our own history developed. This is not to make claim as to whether or not his philosophies
or opinions were correct, rather merely to state that his works proved so influential that society has a
positive opinion of him. Looking around today, however, it is hard to see how a philosopher who lived
four thousand years ago could have an immediate impact on us. It is under this pretense through the
process of backwards inference that this paper is going to set out to prove that Aristotle s empirical
methods form the basis for the modern day scientific method and regardless of his views on natural
philosophy, Aristotle remains a major authority in our contemporary intellectual world.
In order to prove this a firm understanding of Aristotle and empiricism is imperative. From there then
can trace the origins of the scientific method to prove the relationship between the two. It is important
to note that the scientific method gives us the foundation for which we perceive and

The Concept Of Revenge In Hamlet
While seeking revenge, dig two graves one for yourself , as is what happens to those who take
revenge, buried in their own unforgiveness. Francis Bacon s idea of revenge attempts to bypass this
problem of unforgiveness, with the forgiveness of the perpetrator. But not all revenge can be simply
forgiven, which is the case in Hamlet; Francis Bacon also knows about this problem, but describes it
in his own words with The most tolerable sort of revenge is for those wrongs which there is no law to
remedy; but then let a man take heed the revenge be such as there is no law to punish (Francis Bacon
15). Sir Francis Bacon s idea of revenge relates to Hamlet in how revenge is handled, the
repercussions of acting in revenge, and its ability to change a person s thought process.
It can be easily said that no one can handle the feeling of revenge perfectly, as is the case for Hamlet
specifically. Early in the play Hamlet it is said that Hamlet had lost his father to a poisonous snake
whilst he was in the gardens, but it is later revealed in act one by his father s ghost of his true death.
Now, Hamlet, hear. Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard, A serpent stung me. So the whole ear of
Denmark Is by a forgèd process of my death Rankly abused. But know, thou noble youth, The serpent
that did sting thy father s life Now wears his crown (I.V.34 40). Hamlet s father tells Hamlet the truth
of his death by his brother s hand, giving Hamlet a soul to avenge. Francis Bacon s

Digestive System Disorder
For my Anatomy and Physiology final I chose to research a digestive system disorder. I researched
different disorders and the most appealing disorder to me was the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease,
or most commonly known as GERD as well as Acid Reflux Disease. GERD is a common disorder
with more than 10 million Americans who have been diagnosed, including infants. GERD is a reflux
disease that is triggered by a weak lower esophageal sphincter. The lower esophageal sphincter, LES,
is located between the end of the esophagus and the stomach. A closed lower esophageal sphincter
prevents acid and bolus from returning to the esophagus. Those diagnosed with GERD experience a
weak lower esophageal sphincter, which can cause bolus and acid to travel up the esophagus, causing
a heart burning sensation. Overtime, a continuous exposure to the stomach acid and bolus can cause
the esophagus to erode, which may result in bleeding as well as breathing problems. A most common
symptom of GERD is heartburn that increases when bending over, stooping, lying down, and eating.
Other symptoms that can occur are nausea, hoarseness, laryngitis chronic dry cough, asthma, an
increase of saliva, earaches, as well as bad breath. Nausea is experienced when eating either too
quickly or eat an excess of food in a short amount of time. If your lower esophagus sphincter, or LES,
is too weak, an excess of food can cause a back up into the esophagus. The acid reflux can enter the

My Pre Conference With Mrs. Andruska
The purpose of my pre conference with Mrs. Andruska was to establish a rapport with her, to learn

lesson I would be observing.
When asking my first questions to Mrs. Andruska in our pre conference, it became clear that she
prides herself on providing highly effective instruction for all of her students. I asked her about the
areas of her instruction that she takes pride in, and where she believes her biggest strengths are. She
explained that she prides herself on incorporating a variety of music education methodologies into her
teaching. These methodologies include Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroz, all of which Mrs. Andruska has
studied and obtained certifications in. Her attention to detail in her lesson design, preparation, and
organization was evident when discussing the lesson I would be observing.
I asked Mrs. Andruska the following questions in an attempt to learn more about any instructional
challenges she is facing in her classroom:
How have things been going in your classroom?
Can you tell me about some areas that you are finding success?
My goal is to offer you guidance that will help your teaching to improve. Are there any areas you feel
we should focus on?

Death In Venice Character Analysis Essay
In the whole part, nobody like Madame de Merteuil she plays with everybody s feelings despises other
women and kind of describe herself as self made women, but she is a very smart woman who knows
how to play the game she been playing. To her love is exists but women and men must enslave each
other when someone in love to her seems to have no interest when the opportunity presents itself. The
important way Madame de Merteuil want to satisfy is to have the latter back. Merteuil encourages the
girl to marry Gercourt and keep him as her lover which is unexpected. Valmont is a drama film with
characters who may be associated with the concept. Valmont is more interested in pursuing Madame
de Tourvel, that women let Valmont know that she would never be unfaithful to her husband, but the
larger meaning of the concept is to get the letter back from Valmont if he succeeds he can sleep in bed
with Madame de Merteuil. Valmont is unsuccessful, but she refuses to sleep in bed with him, that
makes them choose war and cause him to death, letting Valmont and Merteuil exposed. I guess she is a
woman who wants reputation and plays with everybody s feelings. To her love is exists but women
and men must enslave each other when someone in love to her seems to have no interest when the
opportunity presents itself. Death in Venice is a 19th century novel that shields away from a heavy

Charles Manson Case Study
1. The members of Charles Manson s cult family were Leslie Van Houten, Bobby Beausoleil, Paul
Watkins, Catherine Gypse Share, Mary Brunner, Susan Atkins, Linda Kasabain, Steve Grogan,
Patricia Krenwinkel, Charles Watson, and Squeaky Fromme. Almost all of the members came from
middle working class families and were generally happy people. Some of the members were also very
religious like Charles Watson, for example, was a leader of a church youth group and enjoyed
attending Sunday night services. The absence of a father, however, led some of his followers into a
world of experimenting with drugs and running away. Their lost, rebellious souls found comfort in
Charles Manson who became a father figure to them.
2. The 1960s was the decade of the Civil Rights Movement and of counterculture. The Civil Rights
Movement saw the rise of social groups, like the Black Panther Party, who had had enough of being
racially discriminated and would conduct boycotts, sit ins, and marches in order to support their cause.
Counterculture consisted of young people, known as hippies, who revolted against government
agendas like the Vietnam War, and who wanted to live in a society that was based upon freedom and
love. Manson believed that there would be a race war between blacks and whites and that black people
would come on top. It became evident to Manson that Helter Skelter, the last final destructive war
among men on the face of the earth, was not coming and it was up to him to create it. So, Manson took
advantage of the counterculture happening in the 60 s to led young people into believing the world
would go to war and the only way to survive is to stick together.
3. In an era that sought love and peace, Manson was able to successfully manipulate the emotions of
young people. Manson began his recruitment in the hippie ridden area of Haight Ashbury, San
Francisco. There, Manson was able to croon his way into the minds of the young and vulnerable.
Upon recruitment, Manson would tell his followers, while they were under the influence of LSD, to
essentially erase everything they know about society and fill their minds with his philosophies because
he was the embodiment of Jesus Christ. His followers did as he said because most of

he felt like it was an end of his life. During this period when Beethoven had almost stopped working
on music creation, he was living off funds from his earlier compositions, and symphonies. Those
funds soon proved to be no enough to support Beethoven, and he feel deeper and deeper into an
economic slump.
Tragically on March 26, 1827, due to his dimensioning health, and lack of funds to provide care,
Ludwig Van Beethoven, the great musical genius ever to walk this earth, died.

of Beethoven s greatest masterpieces not to mention a spectacular work to listen too while studying

Generic Vs Brand Ativan Essay
Which is Better: Cheap Ativan (Generic) or Brand Ativan?

version will be very costly while the other kind of lorazepam is relatively cheaper. Should people stick
with the costlier brand name version of Ativan medication or choose the cheap version?
Brand vs. Generic
The original company to introduce lorazepam to the world intended the medication to act as a cure for
anxiety and other stress conceived problems. During the first few years of Ativan being on the market,
the original company, also known as the mother company, had exclusive rights to the FDA approved
drug. Since that company had incurred millions of dollars in expenses during the testing, researching,
and marketing of lorazepam, the price of the medication was very high. After the mother company s
patent rights had expired, a lot of other companies started to make their own version of Ativan. Since
the research and testing processes were already done by the mother company, the companies can

Shattering the Glass House of Mirth Essay
Shattering the Glass House
where ignorance is bliss, / Tis folly to be wise. Thomas Gray
The title of Edith Wharton s novel The House of Mirth waxes poetic irony in the case of the old
money society of turn of the century New York. The individual as part of the collective of society
which seeks to oppress individuality is representative of the house in the novel s title. To remain
ignorant and play by the rules, therein lies the mirth. Clearly, the victimization of the story s heroine,
Lily Bart, by the elite social set she associates herself with illustrates Wharton s disdain for the rigidity
of this society against the individual. Lily is, at first, an example of the collective society she is a

Wharton s representation of the power of the social class of turn of the century New York is expressed
through the struggle between the individual and the collective force of society. The rules of society
define each individual s place, and it is the group that reflects shared beliefs and dictates behavior.
This dichotomy is multi layered, reaching all the way down to the deep internal struggle of the
individual human being. Lily s struggle with her individuality and the need to play by the rules causes
her to commit social blunders and become an innocent victim of society s harsh cruelty.
At the beginning of the novel, Lily is aware of and acts according to the rules which subscribe to the
Manichean principle: One must consistently act in one way or the other there is no in between. There
is no distance between the internal and the external for Lily at this point, which is the root of her
innocence, but she is vaguely aware that something is happening to her. She longs for escape from
routine (19) but is still conscious of the fact that escape does not come without a price. Lily is never
able to do a natural thing without having to screen it behind a structure of artifice (19). She is innocent
in intent, and because of this she indulges herself with her little escapes from time to time without
much thought to the consequences until after the fact. Her attempts to ignore or mask her social

Essay on Meat Industry

the previously existing ones. While these problems are not like those found in The Jungle, they do
parallel how by exposing what is going on in the meat industry; new regulations would be the answer
to the noted problems. The increased demand for meat has made it a rushed mutated production
instead of a means to raise livestock for consumers. Taking into consideration the demand for cheap

demand of meat has greatly skyrocketed. Animals whose sole ... Show more content on

This is even more so if the hormones that were used to modify the meat for production have side

not only of humans but of the animals that are in the business. The grounds for this argument are the
horrible conditions that animals are faced with that include medical modifications, hormone and
antibiotic injections, animals receive, and the why conditions in which they are stored to grow up in

regulations the point of organic meat will help support the main claim by showing how that kind of
meat is more beneficial. The main opposition to the core of this argument would come from the
vegetarian standpoint. Knocking everything down from the meat, that would be the vegetarian point of
view. This opposition will highlight the vegetarian diet and show the downsides of meat based on the
quality of both diets. The conditions in which meat livestock live in is not exactly that of a large open

Historiography Of The British Empire
Any historiography of The British Raj must first start with the understanding that The British Raj fits
within the broader historic concept of The British Empire. In the late 19th Century, many historians
proposed that the history of The British Empire could be broken down into The First British Empire
and The Second British Empire. The British Raj falls within the category of The Second British
Empire within this view. The previous British involvement in India, via The East India Company,
would largely fall within First British Empire. The opinions of historians, not any official decree by
British law or authorities, are the basis for the concept of multiple periods of The British Empire.
There was never an official start, or end date, for either period of empire. The British Empire was
never an official entity, as in there was not a document or constitution dictating how it was
administered. As a result, the colonial administrations varied depending on the colony to which they
belonged. The views on The British Empire, during its height, were not a single monolithic view
shared by all British citizens, but varied across the full spectrum from unwavering support to strong
opposition. Joseph Chamberlain s 1897 book The True Conception of Empire provides an excellent
quote that sums up a common mindset of the era. We feel now that our rule over these territories can
only be justified if we can show that it adds to the happiness and prosperity of the people,

How Did The Age Of Exploration Cause Social Changes In The...
The time period of 1492 to 1750 was an era of conquest and innovation. Arounnd this time was when
there was more interactions between the Eastern and Western hemispheres of the world. These
interactions had major impacts on the world as a whole at the time, both good and bad. During this
time in the Atlantic world, European dominance and the demand for God, gold, and glory remained
constant, while there were significant social changes in the Native American population and the
attitude that native had towards the Europeans. During this time period, Columbus was exploring the
Atlantic, however, many things stayed constant socially due to European greed. One continuity was
European dominance. This was largely in part because of their technology ... Show more content on

An example of this desire would be how Columbus s initial thought upon meeting the natives was how
they would be servant and were to find their gold. During the time period 1492 to 1750, the Age of
Exploration was occuring causing many things to change socially due to the increased interaction
between the two hemispheres. One changed that occured during this time was the decreasing Native
American population. The reason for this change was largely due to exposure to western diseases that
the natives had not grown used to, and also due to slaughtering and enslavement by the Europeans. An
example of this is when the Arawak Indians were enslaved by the Spaniyards, who would work them
to death and even kill them if they did not do what was asked. Another change was the attitude that the
Native Americans had towards the Europeans. Initially, they were welcoming and even believed the
Europeans were gods, but after a series of unpleasant encounters, this opinion changed. An example of
this would be the backlash from Native Americans who would attack Europeans who attempted to
colonize on their land. This time period was an age of discovery that led to conquest and increased

Interpersonal Communication In The Classroom
In 2005 at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Louisville, Ky I walked into the Behavioral
Disorder classroom headed up by Mr. Miracle. He was an attractive older man with gray temples and
salt pepper strands throughout his fully filled head. He had a smile that was tired but genuine and Paul
Newman blue eyes that shined. He had been a Special Education teacher for over 20 years and he was
exhausted. His disposition convinced me that working with special needs children was not going to a
long term plan if I wanted any sort of happily ever after. The classroom consisted of seven students,
who were the picture of diversity via race, socioeconomics and cognitive ability. Their diagnosis
ranged from conduct disorder to autism spectrum disorder.
It was one student with vocal stereotypy, which is non functional speech that could consist of singing,
squeals, babbling, repetitive sounds and so on, who emitted sounds from the Three Stooges. If the
student was happy we could hear her making nyuk nyuk and wooes , but if the student was unhappy
she would utter says oh a wise guy . I found it amazing and somewhat entertaining until Mr. Miracle
explained that the student preferred objects and items to people. It had taken him a year to get the
student to prefer objects paired with people such as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Comparing Blank Page And The Bloody Chamber
Isak Dinesen s Blank Page (1957) and Angela Carter s The Bloody Chamber (1979) are both stories
centralizing issues on gender by particularly focusing on women, female body and indeed questioning
concepts like gender roles and female identity. Briefly, The Blank Page, is a short story about how
female identity is constructed in which Dinesen questions this identity symbolically through the story
about women and tradition of story telling. On the other hand, Angela Carter s The Bloody Chamber is
a story about young girl who is chasing the happily ever after dream through getting married. And,
shortly, her powerful husband who she seeks happiness is actually an obsessed man with virgin girls
and wants to kill them straight after taking their virginity. In this essay, I will do a comparative reading
to both stories and analyze them in terms of their differences and similarities. However, considering
the fact that there are numerous symbols in these stories I will mainly focus on the concepts of blood,
virginity, curiosity, and narrating style. And, also support ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Bloody Chamber, the female character is only written as heroine while the hero s name is
Marquis and many time mentioned in the story. In this regard, the women is not given a voice and a
complete identity but its partially told even if the story is directly about her. And, in the Blank Page
again the women is not given a name. However, what is different in the Blank Page is that fact that the
story is told by the women herself. So she becomes the narrator and the voice of the story. In this
sense, unlike, the Bloody Chamber her character is out in the story straight away because you hear the
story from her mouth. As a result, the narrating style also adds up to the construction of female
identity in regards not only to how women are told but also to the way readers experience the

Comparing Crime Genre In Winter s Bone And The Big Sleep
A Compare and Contrast Analysis on the Theme of the Crime Genre in Winter s Bone (2010) by
Debra Granik and The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler
This study will compare and contrast the elements of the crime genre in Winter s Bone (2010) by
Debra Granik and The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. Winter s Bone is a story tells the story of Ree
Dolly s (Jennifer Lawrence) struggle to find her missing father through various methods of detective
work in her local community. In a similar manner, Raymond Chandler s novel The Big Sleep defines
the criminal investigation of various murders by the detective, Phillip Marlowe. These two plots
define the similar use of a protagonist that acts as an investigator seeking to discover the truth of a
particular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ree s motivation to find her father is primarily based on her loyalty to family in order to keep her
home and protect her two siblings, Sonny (Isaiah Stone) and Ashlee (Ashlee Thompson). This form of
crime genre story does not involve the typical detective for hire protagonist often found in detective
stories, such as The Big Sleep. In contrast to Ree s family motives, Phillip Marlowe is a detective that
works for money in order to help wealthy benefactors, such as General Sternwood, to resolve personal
matters outside of law enforcement. Marlowe s language defines the upper class interactions with
wealthy employers that he must deal with on a regular basis:
Money, she croaked. I suppose you want money / How much money? I asked not to sneer./ Fifteen
thousand dollars? I nodded. that would be about right. That would be the established fee (Chandler
227). In this manner, Ree is a protagonist that doing detective work to save her siblings and her home,
which does not involve payment in the investigation into her father s death. Ree s interaction with
local police and drug dealers is often far more rural in its language style: Ree: This fella with the
money have a

Short Story About The Haunted House
In the year of 1989, there was a street named Elm, in the state of Wyoming. Few chose to live on that
street, and they all knew about the haunted house, up on the hill, on the west side of town, coming off
of Elm. Once, I spent the week with some friends and, Halloween came upon us, while I stayed with
them. I was telling my first grade brother and his friends stories to scare them out of their wits.
Besides, no one wants little kids tagging along with you to go trick or treating, when you could go
with your friends to Haunted Houses, and not ones set up by the town hall. We were just about to pass
the house, not thinking anything of it, when we heard a moan coming from Old Man Reaper s house.
Their eyes grew wide with fear. Mr. G. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

footsteps. Nope, he replied. Then they stopped. I look at their faces and Mom screamed: DINNER S
READY! We all ran to the kitchen and got our plates piled with homemade pizza. Continue the story!
one of my brother s friends shouted. Let s finish eating, I said. Darn! all the boys said in unison. We
all immediately started laughing. We sat around and finished off all of the pizza. We all went back into
the living room, except me. I hung around to make sure my brother had his costume on right and it
looked scary enough. He looked amazingly creepy. I ran to my little brother and jumped onto the
couch beside him. So we all rummaged about in our bags for our flashlights, and when we turned
them on, there was a black cat staring straight at us, with red, glowing eyes. The boys all gasped. We
jumped but didn t make any noise for fear of someone hearing us. We started to go up the stairs but
decided to make sure we all stayed together in case of an emergency. We started to tiptoe through the
house and look into all of the rooms. Suddenly, a door opened behind us, and a tall, toothpick looking
man came out and had a round white face, two dots for a nose, and a thin smile, like the one you
would see on the face of a murderer behind his next victim, waiting to strike.

Student Leadership Reflection
Throughout the semester I have learned a lot about my strengths. At first, I had no clue what they
were. I also had no clue that they can help explain why certain people work well in a group together or
why they don t. My strengths have helped me adjust to life as a college student and even helped me to
figure out what I want to do after my college career is over. Events like the Heritage Project, The
Student Leadership book, the networking event, and even the peer mentor presentations gave me a lot
to think about when considering my future. This class has helped me develop my leadership skills and
grow as an Otterbein student by allowing me to better understand myself.
Throughout this semester I have encountered many different situations that I have never experienced
before. I wasn t hesitant about starting college but once I got here I found it a little overwhelming. I
didn t know about many of the resources that are on campus and classes were very different from what
I expected them to be. FYS Goal one, found on the strengths reflection paper guidelines is, To connect
you to the resources that promote belonging, wellness, personal development, and success in the first
year . I feel as though FYS 1025 has helped me meet that goal because I now know about many of the
resources centers here. I learned about them through Jordan s peer mentor moments, whether she was
talking about the Center for Student Success or the CCPD. Jordan s peer mentor moments helped me
locate the different resource around campus and even understand what they were about. Even though I
haven t been to some of them, I was able to help people not in our class find them and know what
those resources are about. This has helped me grow as a student because it increases my familiarity
with campus and allows me to know that if I have a question there are people that can provide me with
information.
The course has developed me as a future leader at Otterbein by helping me understand myself. In the
beginning I didn t know about strengths. Now that I do, I see why they are important when beginning
a new chapter in life. Before starting a project, I now think about how I m going to accomplish my
goals. I use my strategic strength to plan out

Single Shot Essay
A single shot. A single shot is all it takes to freeze time, and create a standstill that will last for
generations. A single shot can transport people to a point in time, to let them remember an occasion
that they may have otherwise forgotten; not because it is unimportant, but rather in the scheme of life
sometimes the small moments may go unnoticed. The brain continues to amaze people day by day the
fact that an object so easily created, and so easily destroyed. It can resurface every emotion that was
present in that moment: in the ice age of time. By looking at photography s emotional impact, one can
see the effect on people s perspective on life and the world; this is important because it brings
attention to the exclusivity of pictures, image use in news events, and the personal memoirs that they
create. A picture cannot be measured in words, money, or tangible objects, it is a priceless piece of a
person s history. Nothing in the world compares to a photograph, an authentic view into the past that is
only accessible through the lens of a camera. Drawings and paintings are tweaked by an artist s bias
on how they remember a moment, videos take away interpretation, which can keep people from
thinking, and cause them to only focus on watching. Snapshots are the only representation that exist in
the world that isolate a moment in time and let the mind wander back to the time when it took place.
Scott Momaday expresses that, Photography, at its best, is authentic art, an

  • 4. Dialectical Behavior Therapy And Mindfulness Essay Dialectical Behavior Therapy Mindfulness Mindfulness is another way of meditation. Meditation was used to seek to improve one s psychological or physical health, or spiritual growth. (Brantley, 2007). The history of Mindfulness comes from Buddhism and his search for enlightenment and a foundation of the four noble truths. The Buddha teaching focus on the four noble truths which consist of knowing suffering exists, there is a cause of suffering, there is cessation of suffering and there is a path that leads to the cessation of suffering. (Van Gordon, 2015). The four noble truths were not only there to represent the Buddha s experiential understanding of suffering, but also to express the truth (Van Gordon, 2015). Studies of Buddhism and the Four Noble Truths teach us that there is always going to be suffering in our life but to find ways to overcome suffering (Tsering, 2005). Over the years Mindfulness has been a way to treat a variety of health related conditions anywhere form stress, anxiety and even cancer (M.Orsillo, 2010). Practicing mindfulness does not relate directly to any specific faith or religious beliefs. Pursuing this path, Ignatius received a well rounded education from the University of Paris, attracting new followers, such as Peter Favre and Francis Xavier, and making plans to travel to the Holy Land. I think the ancient indian weaponry was better. One of my reasons that I think that Ancient India is better is because their weaponry was more advanced than Ancient Egypt. Egypt s weapons were made mostly of wood and stone and were very basic compared to India s weaponry which was made of the finest metals and most expensive metals like gold and bronze. India also put expensive jewels on their weaponry. Egypt was a very peaceful farming civilization until they were invaded by the Hyksos. Once they were invaded they had to modify their weapons and often copied their enemies weaponry. Their weaponry was not their own creation it was often copied from other civilizations. India had a strong history of warfare. They fought among their own groups as well as with other civilizations. They were advanced with their weaponry because they needed to constantly improve it because they were always at war. They created the damascus sword which was the strongest and sharpest metal available back then. Other civilizations imported damascus metal to make their own weapons. India also used elephants covered in armor in battle which no other civilization used. Using an elephant covered in armor in warfare was like using a tank in today s modern warfare. • 7. Greek Religion And The Greek Culture When exploring each of the specific elements that make up the Greek culture, one can see that their history of religion is vast. To understand the religious practices of the Ancient Greeks, we must first begin to examine the cultural practices. I will be describing Greek religion as it was practiced in the Archaic and Classical Period, which ranged around 800 B.C. to 323 B.C. When discussing the Classical Period we enter the realm of polytheism which has no attachment to church or body of dogma. Although the Greeks believed in multiple gods, there was no denying that the conduct of the gods was not all acceptable to Greek thought. The Greeks kept mythological stories of the gods at heart, but relied on having the ability to think rationally, or have human reason. This was the Greek way and it was their idea of rational thinking. When it came to living, the primary aim of Greek life is health and goodness. In order to gain this, they had to have religious sacrifices. I would like to discuss these religious practices of Ancient Greek worship, sacrifice, holidays and burials because it is important to learn about and from one of the greatest cultures in history. When discussing the Ancient Greeks, it is essential to review beliefs in the major gods who have inspired these religious practices. • 23. A Brief Note On Diamond Blackfan Anemia ( Dba ) Is A Rare... Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a rare genetic disease that causes defects in the ribosomal structure (Farber, 2016). The disease stems from a decrease in the production of erythroid precursors in the bone marrow, which results in an extremely low red blood cell count. Due to the reduction in the production of erythrocytes, most individuals diagnosed with this disease develop an array of issues that can be life threatening such as a predisposition to cancer and bone marrow failure. Within the first year of life, most symptoms of DBA will appear in most individuals (Ellis, 2014). The importance of understanding the genetics of DBA remains a priority in reducing the number of infants affected by a detrimental hereditary blood disorder. After the first description of DBA by Josephs, the disease was further studied and analyzed by Louis Diamond and Kenneth Blackfan in 1938 (Anupama Narla, 2011). Since Diamond and Blackfan discovered a lot of information on the disease through research, the disease was named after both doctors. Most of the families affected by DBA appear to pass the genetic mutation in a dominant manner. Though several genes have been identified in the development of DBA, mutations in the RPS19 gene has been linked to more cases of DBA. Case Study Of Avon s Global Marketing Avon faces challenges in expanding and sustaining its global manufacturing and supply chain because of the need to develop customized products for its different geographical markets. Establishing presence in new markets with different cultural orientations is also not easy and there is need for different marketing strategies. Typical of global marketing, Avon has to be aware of the different rules and regulations imposed by all its different markets prior to doing business (Daniels, Radebaugh and Sullivan, 2010). The major concern when evaluating new suppliers for Avon would be their reliability in ensuring that materials are provided in time, in the right quantity and cost, and expected quality, as well as their knowledge of the market. ... However, I assume the families that need this support also receive government assistance through programs such as WIC and Link. Application of Plunge Experience Prior to taking the plunge I was not aware that even with government programs there is still a need for pantries in our local area. • 29. The Progression Of Intellectual Development The progression of intellectual development gives us a guide for which to judge the relative merits of historical ideas. This process proves to be critical in our interpretation of the past. If the ideas of today are the successors to our intellectual heritage, then by its virtues they determine how we construe history. In this regard we look back upon Aristotle. By modern standards this famous Greek philosopher is lionized as a transformative scholar. Our adoration for Aristotle then must be derived from how our own history developed. This is not to make claim as to whether or not his philosophies or opinions were correct, rather merely to state that his works proved so influential that society has a positive opinion of him. Looking around today, however, it is hard to see how a philosopher who lived four thousand years ago could have an immediate impact on us. It is under this pretense through the process of backwards inference that this paper is going to set out to prove that Aristotle s empirical methods form the basis for the modern day scientific method and regardless of his views on natural philosophy, Aristotle remains a major authority in our contemporary intellectual world. In order to prove this a firm understanding of Aristotle and empiricism is imperative. From there then can trace the origins of the scientific method to prove the relationship between the two. It is important to note that the scientific method gives us the foundation for which we perceive and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. The Concept Of Revenge In Hamlet While seeking revenge, dig two graves one for yourself , as is what happens to those who take revenge, buried in their own unforgiveness. Francis Bacon s idea of revenge attempts to bypass this problem of unforgiveness, with the forgiveness of the perpetrator. But not all revenge can be simply forgiven, which is the case in Hamlet; Francis Bacon also knows about this problem, but describes it in his own words with The most tolerable sort of revenge is for those wrongs which there is no law to remedy; but then let a man take heed the revenge be such as there is no law to punish (Francis Bacon 15). Sir Francis Bacon s idea of revenge relates to Hamlet in how revenge is handled, the repercussions of acting in revenge, and its ability to change a person s thought process. It can be easily said that no one can handle the feeling of revenge perfectly, as is the case for Hamlet specifically. Early in the play Hamlet it is said that Hamlet had lost his father to a poisonous snake whilst he was in the gardens, but it is later revealed in act one by his father s ghost of his true death. Now, Hamlet, hear. Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard, A serpent stung me. So the whole ear of Denmark Is by a forgèd process of my death Rankly abused. But know, thou noble youth, The serpent that did sting thy father s life Now wears his crown (I.V.34 40). • 31. Digestive System Disorder For my Anatomy and Physiology final I chose to research a digestive system disorder. I researched different disorders and the most appealing disorder to me was the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or most commonly known as GERD as well as Acid Reflux Disease. GERD is a common disorder with more than 10 million Americans who have been diagnosed, including infants. GERD is a reflux disease that is triggered by a weak lower esophageal sphincter. The lower esophageal sphincter, LES, is located between the end of the esophagus and the stomach. A closed lower esophageal sphincter prevents acid and bolus from returning to the esophagus. Those diagnosed with GERD experience a weak lower esophageal sphincter, which can cause bolus and acid to travel up the esophagus, causing a heart burning sensation. Overtime, a continuous exposure to the stomach acid and bolus can cause the esophagus to erode, which may result in bleeding as well as breathing problems. A most common symptom of GERD is heartburn that increases when bending over, stooping, lying down, and eating. Other symptoms that can occur are nausea, hoarseness, laryngitis chronic dry cough, asthma, an increase of saliva, earaches, as well as bad breath. Nausea is experienced when eating either too quickly or eat an excess of food in a short amount of time. If your lower esophagus sphincter, or LES, is too weak, an excess of food can cause a back up into the esophagus. The acid reflux can enter the pharynx, the throat, ... Almost all of the members came from middle working class families and were generally happy people. Some of the members were also very religious like Charles Watson, for example, was a leader of a church youth group and enjoyed attending Sunday night services. The absence of a father, however, led some of his followers into a world of experimenting with drugs and running away. Their lost, rebellious souls found comfort in Charles Manson who became a father figure to them. 2. The 1960s was the decade of the Civil Rights Movement and of counterculture. The Civil Rights Movement saw the rise of social groups, like the Black Panther Party, who had had enough of being racially discriminated and would conduct boycotts, sit ins, and marches in order to support their cause. Counterculture consisted of young people, known as hippies, who revolted against government agendas like the Vietnam War, and who wanted to live in a society that was based upon freedom and love. Manson believed that there would be a race war between blacks and whites and that black people would come on top. It became evident to Manson that Helter Skelter, the last final destructive war among men on the face of the earth, was not coming and it was up to him to create it. So, Manson took advantage of the counterculture happening in the 60 s to led young people into believing the world would go to war and the only way to survive is to stick together. 3. In an era that sought love and peace, Manson was able to successfully manipulate the emotions of young people. Manson began his recruitment in the hippie ridden area of Haight Ashbury, San Francisco. There, Manson was able to croon his way into the minds of the young and vulnerable. Upon recruitment, Manson would tell his followers, while they were under the influence of LSD, to essentially erase everything they know about society and fill their minds with his philosophies because he was the embodiment of Jesus Christ. Thomas Gray The title of Edith Wharton s novel The House of Mirth waxes poetic irony in the case of the old money society of turn of the century New York. The individual as part of the collective of society which seeks to oppress individuality is representative of the house in the novel s title. To remain ignorant and play by the rules, therein lies the mirth. Wharton s representation of the power of the social class of turn of the century New York is expressed through the struggle between the individual and the collective force of society. This dichotomy is multi layered, reaching all the way down to the deep internal struggle of the individual human being. Lily s struggle with her individuality and the need to play by the rules causes her to commit social blunders and become an innocent victim of society s harsh cruelty. At the beginning of the novel, Lily is aware of and acts according to the rules which subscribe to the Manichean principle: One must consistently act in one way or the other there is no in between. There is no distance between the internal and the external for Lily at this point, which is the root of her innocence, but she is vaguely aware that something is happening to her. She longs for escape from routine (19) but is still conscious of the fact that escape does not come without a price. Lily is never able to do a natural thing without having to screen it behind a structure of artifice (19). The grounds for this argument are the horrible conditions that animals are faced with that include medical modifications, hormone and antibiotic injections, animals receive, and the why conditions in which they are stored to grow up in affect the output product. Historiography Of The British Empire Any historiography of The British Raj must first start with the understanding that The British Raj fits within the broader historic concept of The British Empire. In the late 19th Century, many historians proposed that the history of The British Empire could be broken down into The First British Empire and The Second British Empire. The British Raj falls within the category of The Second British Empire within this view. The previous British involvement in India, via The East India Company, would largely fall within First British Empire. The opinions of historians, not any official decree by British law or authorities, are the basis for the concept of multiple periods of The British Empire. There was never an official start, or end date, for either period of empire. The British Empire was never an official entity, as in there was not a document or constitution dictating how it was administered. As a result, the colonial administrations varied depending on the colony to which they belonged. The views on The British Empire, during its height, were not a single monolithic view shared by all British citizens, but varied across the full spectrum from unwavering support to strong opposition. Comparing Blank Page And The Bloody Chamber Isak Dinesen s Blank Page (1957) and Angela Carter s The Bloody Chamber (1979) are both stories centralizing issues on gender by particularly focusing on women, female body and indeed questioning concepts like gender roles and female identity. Briefly, The Blank Page, is a short story about how female identity is constructed in which Dinesen questions this identity symbolically through the story about women and tradition of story telling. On the other hand, Angela Carter s The Bloody Chamber is a story about young girl who is chasing the happily ever after dream through getting married. And, shortly, her powerful husband who she seeks happiness is actually an obsessed man with virgin girls and wants to kill them straight after taking their virginity. However, considering the fact that there are numerous symbols in these stories I will mainly focus on the concepts of blood, virginity, curiosity, and narrating style. And, also support ... In this regard, the women is not given a voice and a complete identity but its partially told even if the story is directly about her. And, in the Blank Page again the women is not given a name. However, what is different in the Blank Page is that fact that the story is told by the women herself. So she becomes the narrator and the voice of the story. In this sense, unlike, the Bloody Chamber her character is out in the story straight away because you hear the story from her mouth. As a result, the narrating style also adds up to the construction of female identity in regards not only to how women are told but also to the way readers experience the ... Winter s Bone is a story tells the story of Ree Dolly s (Jennifer Lawrence) struggle to find her missing father through various methods of detective work in her local community. In a similar manner, Raymond Chandler s novel The Big Sleep defines the criminal investigation of various murders by the detective, Phillip Marlowe. Ree s motivation to find her father is primarily based on her loyalty to family in order to keep her home and protect her two siblings, Sonny (Isaiah Stone) and Ashlee (Ashlee Thompson). This form of crime genre story does not involve the typical detective for hire protagonist often found in detective stories, such as The Big Sleep. In contrast to Ree s family motives, Phillip Marlowe is a detective that works for money in order to help wealthy benefactors, such as General Sternwood, to resolve personal matters outside of law enforcement. Marlowe s language defines the upper class interactions with wealthy employers that he must deal with on a regular basis: Money, she croaked. I suppose you want money / How much money? I asked not to sneer./ Fifteen thousand dollars? I nodded. that would be about right. That would be the established fee (Chandler 227). In this manner, Ree is a protagonist that doing detective work to save her siblings and her home, which does not involve payment in the investigation into her father s death. Ree s interaction with local police and drug dealers is often far more rural in its language style: Ree: This fella with the money have a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Short Story About The Haunted House In the year of 1989, there was a street named Elm, in the state of Wyoming. Few chose to live on that street, and they all knew about the haunted house, up on the hill, on the west side of town, coming off of Elm. Once, I spent the week with some friends and, Halloween came upon us, while I stayed with them. I was telling my first grade brother and his friends stories to scare them out of their wits. Besides, no one wants little kids tagging along with you to go trick or treating, when you could go with your friends to Haunted Houses, and not ones set up by the town hall. We were just about to pass the house, not thinking anything of it, when we heard a moan coming from Old Man Reaper s house. Their eyes grew wide with fear. Mr. G. ... I look at their faces and Mom screamed: DINNER S READY! We all ran to the kitchen and got our plates piled with homemade pizza. Continue the story! one of my brother s friends shouted. Let s finish eating, I said. Darn! all the boys said in unison. We all immediately started laughing. We sat around and finished off all of the pizza. We all went back into the living room, except me. I hung around to make sure my brother had his costume on right and it looked scary enough. He looked amazingly creepy. I ran to my little brother and jumped onto the couch beside him. So we all rummaged about in our bags for our flashlights, and when we turned them on, there was a black cat staring straight at us, with red, glowing eyes. The boys all gasped. We jumped but didn t make any noise for fear of someone hearing us. We started to go up the stairs but decided to make sure we all stayed together in case of an emergency. We started to tiptoe through the house and look into all of the rooms. Suddenly, a door opened behind us, and a tall, toothpick looking man came out and had a round white face, two dots for a nose, and a thin smile, like the one you would see on the face of a murderer behind his next victim, waiting to strike. ... • 49. Student Leadership Reflection Throughout the semester I have learned a lot about my strengths. At first, I had no clue what they were. I also had no clue that they can help explain why certain people work well in a group together or why they don t. My strengths have helped me adjust to life as a college student and even helped me to figure out what I want to do after my college career is over. Events like the Heritage Project, The Student Leadership book, the networking event, and even the peer mentor presentations gave me a lot to think about when considering my future. This class has helped me develop my leadership skills and grow as an Otterbein student by allowing me to better understand myself. Throughout this semester I have encountered many different situations that I have never experienced before. I wasn t hesitant about starting college but once I got here I found it a little overwhelming. I didn t know about many of the resources that are on campus and classes were very different from what I expected them to be. FYS Goal one, found on the strengths reflection paper guidelines is, To connect you to the resources that promote belonging, wellness, personal development, and success in the first year . I feel as though FYS 1025 has helped me meet that goal because I now know about many of the resources centers here. I learned about them through Jordan s peer mentor moments, whether she was talking about the Center for Student Success or the CCPD. Jordan s peer mentor moments helped me locate the different resource around campus and even understand what they were about. Even though I haven t been to some of them, I was able to help people not in our class find them and know what those resources are about. This has helped me grow as a student because it increases my familiarity with campus and allows me to know that if I have a question there are people that can provide me with information. The course has developed me as a future leader at Otterbein by helping me understand myself. In the beginning I didn t know about strengths. Now that I do, I see why they are important when beginning a new chapter in life. Before starting a project, I now think about how I m going to accomplish my goals. I use my strategic strength to plan out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Single Shot Essay A single shot. A single shot is all it takes to freeze time, and create a standstill that will last for generations. A single shot can transport people to a point in time, to let them remember an occasion that they may have otherwise forgotten; not because it is unimportant, but rather in the scheme of life sometimes the small moments may go unnoticed. The brain continues to amaze people day by day the fact that an object so easily created, and so easily destroyed. It can resurface every emotion that was present in that moment: in the ice age of time. By looking at photography s emotional impact, one can see the effect on people s perspective on life and the world; this is important because it brings attention to the exclusivity of pictures, image use in news events, and the personal memoirs that they create. A picture cannot be measured in words, money, or tangible objects, it is a priceless piece of a person s history. Nothing in the world compares to a photograph, an authentic view into the past that is only accessible through the lens of a camera. Drawings and paintings are tweaked by an artist s bias on how they remember a moment, videos take away interpretation, which can keep people from thinking, and cause them to only focus on watching. Snapshots are the only representation that exist in the world that isolate a moment in time and let the mind wander back to the time when it took place. Scott Momaday expresses that, Photography, at its best, is authentic art, an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
