This document provides guidelines for mine haul road design based on a survey of 13 surface mines in western Canada. The key points from the survey are:
- Larger haul trucks with payloads up to 300 metric tons are now used, requiring wider and more gently curved haul roads.
- Haul road lengths vary significantly between mines but temporary in-pit roads average 1.4 years of life while semi-permanent ex-pit roads average 8 years.
- Haul road construction and maintenance equipment includes graders, dozers, dump trucks, water trucks. Larger compactors and rollers are also used.
