4. Introduction
This region is developed over Madhupur clay. It
occupies about 80% of the Barind Tract. It differs
from 26 in occupying a level landscape 27 & 28 in
shallowly-weathered, impervious, poorly drained
soils.
Floodplain regions in mainly acidic soils developed
over mineral poor Madhupur clay above river flood
level.
5. Location and extent: Dinajpur, Gaibandha,
Jaipurhat, Bogra, Noagaon, Sirajganj and
Natore districts.
Total area: 5049 km2
Sub regions: Two
6. Physiography
Almost level, with 60-90 cm local
differences in elevation. Relief is
locally irregular. In the west,
elevations gradually increase as this
region merges with the High Barind
Tract
9. Present Land Use
T. aman is the major crop. B. aus/T.
aus are also grown. DWA in low lands.
With irrigation early rabi crops
(potato, wheat) and HYV boro are
grown.
10. Crop Productivity Constraints
Wet/flooded in rainy season and very dry in dry season. It
is bad for dry land crops.
Low organic matter content, low soil fertility relative to
floodplains. Rapid decomposition of organic matter.
Silty top soils are easily puddle when wet and which have
a strong plough pan. Breaking plough pan, low bearing
capacity when wet.
Variable pre-monsoon rainfall, and occasional dry breaks
in rain
Poor rural road communications
