Bedside shift report involves nurses providing report at the patient's bedside in order to improve safety, communication, and patient satisfaction. Statistics show that poor communication contributes to many medical errors, yet traditional shift report away from the bedside risks missing critical information and distractions. Bedside report gives patients and families an opportunity to participate in the discussion of their care plan and ensures a safe handoff between nurses. While some nurses are initially uncomfortable or concerned with confidentiality, studies demonstrate that bedside report improves outcomes for both patients and nurses.

Family-Centered Communication in Day Surgery
Three Quality of Care key drivers for Our Lady of the Resurrection (OLR) Medical Center’s Surgical Services department are measured quarterly. The Surgical Services Department has met or exceeded targets for two of the three key drivers. However, for the past six months, the department has not met the goal for a third key driver: explanations provided about progress following surgery. Meeting the goal for the third key driver is dependent on effective communication processes from staff and surgeons to patients and their families. Much research on factors influencing patient satisfaction in perioperative care has been conducted. A driving factor identified is communication to patients and families during care.
Yellen (2003) surveyed ambulatory surgery patients to determine the influence of the nurse-sensitive variables of age, gender, culture, previous hospital admissions, nurse communication, pain, and satisfaction with pain management on overall patient satisfaction. Results showed that nurse communication was the most significant indicator of patient satisfaction, and satisfaction with pain management was the second most significant indicator. Furthermore, patients who were satisfied with nurse communication also reported satisfaction with pain management.

Family-Centered Communication in Day Surgery
Three Quality of Care key drivers for Our Lady of the Resurrection (OLR) Medical Center’s Surgical Services department are measured quarterly. The Surgical Services Department has met or exceeded targets for two of the three key drivers. However, for the past six months, the department has not met the goal for a third key driver: explanations provided about progress following surgery. Meeting the goal for the third key driver is dependent on effective communication processes from staff and surgeons to patients and their families. A communication process exists, but by looking at areas in which the process is broken, relatively easy and effective fixes can be put into place. Much research on factors influencing patient satisfaction in perioperative care has been conducted. A driving factor identified is communication to patients and families during care.
Yellen (2003) surveyed ambulatory surgery patients to determine the influence of the nurse-sensitive variables of age, gender, culture, previous hospital admissions, nurse communication, pain, and satisfaction with pain management on overall patient satisfaction. Results showed that nurse communication was the most significant indicator of patient satisfaction, and satisfaction with pain management was the second most significant indicator. Furthermore, patients who were satisfied with nurse communication also reported satisfaction with pain management.

through bedside reporting at Catholic Healthare West (CHW).
Qualitative Research
Participants included hospital staff, leaders, and patients.
Nurse supervisors observed bedside reporting at change of shift. They then filled out a questionnaire that had to be checked off to ensure bedside reporting was done correctly.
Bedside reporting made a positive impact in the hospital. Its success was witnessed by nurse leadership rounding on patients in the hospital.
The sample of participants was small and only one department of the hospital was used.
The findings conclude the positive outcomes on patient satisfaction with bedside reporting.

Qualitative research.
A sample of 30 admitted, consenting patients were used. The patients were admitted to one of the three departments where the process of bedside report had been implemented for at least one year.
All data was collected from the answers from the patients through audio-recorded interviews. A research assistant and a registered nurse were present in the interview.
Four essential components came out of the study. Some regarded patient feelings and some regarded possible changes. Patients felt bedside reporting was ‘effective and personalized’ (1). They felt empowered in their care (2). Some felt their privacy was at jeopardy (3), thus allowing for training (4) in this sensitive matter.
The study was limited to three departments in the hospital and no clear generalizability came out of it. Sample collected was small.

The identified clinical problem that is relevant to nurses in the workplace is the reimplementation of a bedside shift report. The bedside shift report may be used to help the development of teamwork, ownership, and accountability thus increasing the satisfaction of the nurses. The reason for selecting the reimplementation of a bedside shift report is because; at a targeted facility the implementation of the bedside shift report is becoming poor. This has led to the poor compliance with the standards of practice, and may increase costs in the facility, for example, those related to the legal costs as a result of falls and medication errors, and the reduction in the satisfaction of the patients due to the poor healthcare outcome (Bonnie, Mary, & Ramona, 2016).
